2022 Volkswagen Jetta Reviews Summary

Volkswagen’s career sales leader, the Jetta receives a mild but value-minded refresh for the 2022 model year. Although the compact sedan’s lineup has been pared down (farewell, SEL Premium and R-Line), the Jetta’s standard features, technology, and power rating get a welcomed boost.

2023 Honda Accord Hybrid Reviews Summary

The 2023 Honda Accord enters a new model year refreshed and rejuvenated, if not exactly revolutionized in comparison to the previous version of Honda’s long-running and highly regarded family sedan. With this, the 11th-generation of the Accord, Honda wisely didn’t attempt to rewrite the rulebook in how the company set about improving one of its most important and popular models.

Available in four trims—Sport, EX-L, Sport-L, and Touring—pricing for the Accord Hybrid ranges from approximately $32,000 to $38,000. These MSRPs are on target with five-seat sedan rivals like the Toyota Camry, Nissan Altima, and Hyundai Sonata, not to mention a dizzying array of small and midsize SUVs, including the Toyota RAV4, Nissan Rogue, Ford Escape, and even Honda’s own CR-V.

Does the Accord Hybrid make enough of a splash to be worthy of consideration in such crowded and hotly-contested markets? After a shorter drive at the start of the year, a week-long test drive this summer provided the answers.

Look and feel
2022 Volkswagen Jetta
6/10
2023 Honda Accord Hybrid
7/10

The 2022 Volkswagen Jetta, despite the automaker's overall sales decline, remained a steadfast performer. It accounted for more than 61 percent of Volkswagen's 101,167 U.S. sales in the previous year, and this figure rose to 70 percent in the first quarter of 2022. The Jetta received a mild makeover for 2022, including an engine update, exterior styling tweaks, improved infotainment, more features, and a new Sport trim. The design changes were subtle, with minor updates to the front fascia, bumper, and grille, which now featured more chrome. The rear bumper was less squatty and more square, and new wheel designs and metallic colors were added to the paint palette.

Inside, the Jetta's updates were equally subtle but appealing. The standard cloth seats featured a new rhombus pattern, and all interiors had an added premium look thanks to contrast stitching. The 8-inch Digital Cockpit instrument cluster became standard across the lineup, with the Jetta SEL receiving the 10-inch Digital Cockpit Pro and an 8-inch touchscreen-navigation system. The cabin was driver-centric, with buttons for climate control, audio, and heated and ventilated seats easily accessible.

The 2023 Honda Accord Hybrid, on the other hand, showcased an elegant exterior that could easily be mistaken for a luxury sedan. The new model was roughly three inches longer than before, with a redesigned front grille and updated LED lighting. The overall length was increased by 2.8 inches, and the rear track by 0.4 inches, giving the car a planted stance. The Accord Hybrid Touring trim, starting at approximately $38,435, featured 19-inch alloy wheels with black accents and optional gloss-black Honda Performance Development (HPD) 19-inch alloys.

Inside, the Accord Hybrid adopted the layout used in Honda’s Civic sedan and hatchback, as well as the CR-V compact SUV. The dashboard featured a strip of honeycomb mesh trim that neatly hid the dash-mounted air vents. The infotainment screen took pride of place atop the dashboard, with a convenient row of buttons and dials for cabin temperature control. The Accord Hybrid Touring came with a 12.3-inch touchscreen, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a wireless device charging pad, “Hey Google” virtual assistant, Amazon Alexa, and a head-up instrument display. The seats provided plenty of comfort, and the rear accommodations offered generous legroom and shoulder room, though headroom was slightly compromised by the sleek roofline.

Performance

The 2022 Volkswagen Jetta was powered by a 1.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine, replacing the previous model year's 1.4-liter turbo-four. The new engine produced 158 horsepower, an increase of 11 hp, while torque remained at 184 pound-feet. Transmission choices included a standard six-speed manual or an optional eight-speed automatic. The Jetta's fuel economy was impressive, with the stick-shift model estimated at 29 mpg city, 43 mpg highway, and 34 mpg combined. Automatic transmission models had slightly different ratings, with S and Sport models at 31 mpg city, 41 mpg highway, and 35 mpg combined, while SE and SEL models were rated at 29 mpg city, 40 mpg highway, and 33 mpg combined.

During an 800-mile road trip, the Jetta averaged 46.9 highway mpg, requiring only two fill-ups for the roughly 1,000-mile journey. The cabin was comfortable for long drives, though not the quietest in its segment. The Jetta's powertrain, however, had its drawbacks, with a touchy throttle, turbo lag, and tepid dynamics. The vehicle offered Eco, Normal, Sport, and Custom drive modes, but the steering feedback was detached, and acceleration in stop-and-go traffic was jumpy.

The 2023 Honda Accord Hybrid featured a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine paired with two electric motors, producing a combined 204 horsepower. The powertrain sent power to the front wheels via a continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT). The Accord Hybrid switched seamlessly between electric power and its gas engine, providing smooth and efficient performance. The suspension absorbed bumps and road imperfections well, offering a balanced ride that was neither too firm nor too soft.

Honda also enhanced the regenerative braking system, increasing it from four levels of regen to six, making it easier to fine-tune. The Accord Hybrid's agile handling made it relaxing to drive in various environments, and despite its increased length, it was easy to park in tight spots.

The 2022 Volkswagen Jetta, despite its compact proportions, offered ample passenger space for four adults, with the ability to accommodate five if needed. The seats were comfortable, though the front seats' bottom cushion inclined slightly, which might not be appreciated by those with shorter legs. The cabin was driver-centric, with buttons for climate control, audio, and heated and ventilated seats easily accessible. There was usable storage space up front, including door pockets, a center console bin, a slot next to the cupholders, and a sunglass holder. The center storage bin, though not large, was still usable, though it lacked a latch.

The 2023 Honda Accord Hybrid's cabin adopted the layout used in Honda’s Civic sedan and hatchback, as well as the CR-V compact SUV. Trunk space was generous at 16.7 cubic feet, with a low load floor for easy access.

The 2022 Volkswagen Jetta received an upgrade in the technology department, with all models equipped with the Digital Cockpit digital instrument cluster. S, Sport, and SE models had an 8-inch display, while the Jetta SEL had a 10.25-inch display with more widgets for navigation, phone history, and driver-assist systems. The standard infotainment system in Jetta S, Sport, and SE trims was a 6.5-inch Volkswagen MIB2 system, with features like Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, and MirrorLink integration. The Jetta SEL had the newer generation 8-inch MIB3 system, with navigation, wireless App-Connect, wireless device charging, multi-phone pairing, and enhanced voice recognition. The system also included HD Radio, SiriusXM 360L satellite radio, a Car-Net Hotspot subscription, and a Plus Nav package. The premium Beats Audio sound system and remote start were also available.

The 2023 Honda Accord Hybrid came with a 12.3-inch touchscreen, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a wireless device charging pad, “Hey Google” virtual assistant, Amazon Alexa, and a head-up instrument display. The Touring trim also featured a 12-speaker Bose audio system, HD radio, and four USB ports. The infotainment system was intuitive, with easy-to-navigate graphics and menus. The physical volume knob and climate control buttons were a welcome addition, making it easy to adjust settings without relying solely on the touchscreen.

The 2022 Volkswagen Jetta came standard with IQ.Drive, Volkswagen's suite of driver-assistance tech. The Jetta S and Sport were equipped with blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and forward-collision warning with automatic braking and pedestrian recognition. The Driver Assistance package added adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go, lane-keep assist, Travel Assist, and Emergency Assist. Travel Assist combined adaptive cruise control and lane-keep assist, while Emergency Assist monitored driver attentiveness and could bring the vehicle to a stop if the driver was unresponsive. The full IQ.DRIVE safety list was standard on Jetta SE and SEL trims. The 2022 Jetta had not yet received crash safety ratings from the NHTSA and IIHS, but the 2021 model received a five-star rating from the NHTSA and mostly “Good” grades from the IIHS.

The 2023 Honda Accord Hybrid came with a comprehensive suite of active safety features, including automatic emergency braking, forward collision warning, adaptive cruise control, lane-keep assist, traffic sign recognition, pedestrian and cyclist detection, and a rear-seat reminder. The Accord Hybrid Touring added a multi-angle rearview camera, front and rear parking sensors, and a head-up instrument display. Blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert were optional on all trims. The Accord Hybrid earned a Top Safety Pick+ rating from the IIHS, with the highest possible scores in crash tests, headlights, crash avoidance and mitigation, and child seat compatibility.
