2022 Toyota Sienna Reviews Summary

The 2022 Toyota Sienna hybrid minivan rolls into the second model year following a redesign for 2021. Last year’s successful makeover with a standard hybrid powertrain returns unchanged, but a new Woodland trim level is available to attract adventurous families (or those who want to look that way).

2023 Mercedes-Benz GLE Reviews Summary

A subtle refresh for the 2024 model year keeps Mercedes’ popular sport-utility competitive against a wide roster of rivals which include the BMW X5, Genesis GV70, Cadillac XT6, Acura MDX, and Volvo XC90, to name just a few.

Changes between the previous GLE-Class and the 2024 model year consist primarily of a subtle redesign of the front grille (look closely and you’ll see it's now filled with tiny Mercedes-Benz star logos), reprofiled headlights and taillights, an updated infotainment system, and optional off-road-themed air suspension system that can raise the GLE 1.2 inches to clear obstacles. It can also shimmy this Mercedes sport-ute back and forth to help get it unstuck over tricky terrain.

Specific to our testing purposes, the 2024 GLE-Class also ushers in a new plug-in hybrid (PHEV) variant called the GLE 450e 4Matic. As the last part of the name suggests, like every 2024 GLE, all-wheel drive is fitted as standard. Yet the big news is what’s under the hood of this new model, namely a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder paired with an electric motor and 23.3-kWh lithium-ion battery pack.

While fully-electrified vehicles presently grab the most automotive headlines, a week spent with the GLE 450e highlighted how easily this luxurious PHEV sport-utility adapts to all sorts of driving situations.

2022 Toyota Sienna

9/10

2023 Mercedes-Benz GLE

7/10

The 2022 Toyota Sienna stood out in a market where minivans were becoming increasingly rare, as many manufacturers shifted focus to SUVs. Despite this trend, Toyota remained committed to the minivan segment, evolving the Sienna over several generations since its debut in 1998. The latest model, launched in 2021, embraced a more SUV-like style while retaining its minivan identity, evident from its sliding side doors. The Sienna featured a bold front end and cleverly designed door hinges that concealed the slider channel, giving it a sleek profile. Inside, the Sienna offered a spacious and practical cabin with ample storage, comfortable seating, and a third-row bench that folded into the floor, making it a versatile choice for families.

In contrast, the 2023 Mercedes-Benz GLE received a subtle exterior update that might have gone unnoticed by many. The GLE's design included minor changes to the headlights and taillights, with LED headlights as standard and multi-beam LED options available. The GLE 450e model, in particular, showcased a sophisticated look with its Twilight Blue metallic finish and 21-inch AMG multi-spoke alloy wheels. Inside, the GLE exuded luxury with its Macchiato beige and black leather upholstery, complemented by natural grain brown walnut trim. The cabin offered a range of interior color choices and trims, ensuring a high-quality and robust appearance that appealed to those seeking a premium SUV experience.

2022 Toyota Sienna

2023 Mercedes-Benz GLE

8/10

The 2022 Toyota Sienna was equipped with a hybrid powertrain, combining a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine with two electric motors to produce 243 horsepower. This setup was available with either front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive, the latter adding a separate electric motor for the rear wheels. The Sienna's electronically controlled continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT) provided smooth power delivery and enhanced fuel efficiency. The Sienna's handling was surprisingly agile for a minivan, thanks to its Toyota Next Generation Architecture (TNGA) platform, which minimized body roll and offered a comfortable ride. The Sienna Hybrid boasted impressive EPA fuel economy ratings, achieving 36 mpg in the city, on the highway, and combined for FWD models, while AWD models achieved 35 mpg across the board.

The 2023 Mercedes-Benz GLE offered a diverse range of powertrains, catering to various preferences and budgets. The lineup included the GLE 350, GLE 450, GLE 450e, and GLE 580, with AMG-badged models like the AMG GLE 53 and AMG GLE 63 S at the top. The GLE 450e featured a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine paired with an electric motor, delivering a combined output of 381 horsepower and 479 pound-feet of torque. This power was distributed to all four wheels via a nine-speed automatic transmission, allowing the GLE 450e to accelerate from zero to 60 mph in just 5.4 seconds. The GLE 450e's electric mode offered an estimated 40-mile range and could operate at highway speeds up to 87 mph. The transition between gas and electric power was seamless, and the suspension provided a smooth ride even on challenging road surfaces.

The 2022 Toyota Sienna was designed to be a practical family vehicle, capable of accommodating a full 4x8 sheet of plywood with the tailgate closed. Its sliding second row added flexibility for loading cargo, with measurements of 33.5 cubic feet behind the third row, 75.2 cubic feet behind the second row, and 101 cubic feet behind the first row. The Sienna also had a 3,500-pound towing capacity. The power-operated sliding doors and tailgate, with foot-motion triggers, made accessing the vehicle convenient, especially when carrying groceries or children.

The 2023 Mercedes-Benz GLE provided ample space for passengers, with comfortable seating for five and a light, airy cabin feel. The GLE 450e offered 33 cubic feet of cargo space behind the 40/20/40 split-folding second row, comparable to rivals like the BMW X5. While the GLE could technically accommodate a third row, it was only available on certain models and was best suited for young children. The GLE 450e came with numerous comfort features, including power-adjustable heated front seats, dual-zone climate control, and a power liftgate. Additional options included massaging front seats, a panoramic sunroof, and heated rear seats, enhancing the overall luxury experience.

The 2022 Toyota Sienna was equipped with a 9-inch touchscreen featuring Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and Amazon Alexa integration. While it lacked wireless connectivity for these features, it offered a range of telematics services, Bluetooth streaming, and optional Qi wireless charging. Higher trim levels included a 12-speaker JBL audio system and a rear-seat entertainment system with an 11.6-inch display. The Sienna also featured a head-up display on Platinum models, providing essential driving information without distracting the driver.

The 2023 Mercedes-Benz GLE boasted the Mercedes Benz User Experience (MBUX) infotainment system, with dual 12.3-inch screens serving as the digital instrument panel and main infotainment display. The system supported wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, along with an improved "Hey Mercedes" voice command system. The GLE's head-up display and augmented reality navigation provided clear and convenient guidance. However, the touch-sensitive controls on the steering wheel could be overly sensitive, occasionally causing unintended volume changes.
