2022 Subaru Ascent vs 2023 Subaru Forester

In 2022, Subaru introduced the Onyx Edition trim level for the Ascent, resulting in a stylish, blacked-out exterior. This mid-range trim emphasized sporty aesthetics with black 20-inch aluminum wheels, a unique grille design, and water-repellent StarTex synthetic leather seats. These features positioned it as an upgraded option within the Ascent lineup, blending utility and visual appeal. While the Ascent’s broad trim levels ranged from Base to Touring, with prices starting at $32,295, all the way to $45,445, the Onyx Edition stood out at $37,995 plus destination charge. It was particularly noted for its triple-zone climate control, heated front seats, and roomy interior.

In contrast, the 2023 Subaru Forester leaned more toward practical simplicity over showiness. While the exterior bore a keepsake resemblance to previous generations, simplicity was its strength. Offered in colors like Cascade Green Silica, the Forester was reminiscent of older models, which might appeal more to traditionalists. Trim levels varied from Base to Touring, with prices beginning at $26,395 and topping at $36,495, excluding the destination fee. The Touring trim added classiness with 18-inch alloy wheels, satin chrome exterior trim, and a stylish Saddle Brown interior. Notably, it featured robust roof rails with substantial static-weight and dynamic-load ratings, allowing for functional versatility, like pitching a tent atop the vehicle.

The 2022 Subaru Ascent came equipped with a 2.4-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine producing a robust 260 horsepower and 277 pound-feet of torque. Paired with a continuously variable transmission (CVT) and standard all-wheel-drive, this SUV offered well-rounded performance capabilities. The Ascent could tow up to 5,000 pounds, boasted an EPA combined fuel-economy rating of 22 mpg, and averaged 20.5 mpg during testing. Subaru’s flat-four engine layout contributed to its excellent handling, while the CVT, with eight programmed ratios, provided seamless shifting. The X-Mode off-road traction control and 8.7 inches of ground clearance enhanced its off-road prowess, although handling sharp corners or sudden braking occasionally revealed challenges.

By contrast, the 2023 Subaru Forester featured a naturally aspirated 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine, putting out 182 horsepower and 176 pound-feet of torque. Its driving dynamics received praise for being comfortable yet responsive, particularly in adverse weather conditions. The Forester's CVT also included eight programmed ratios, mimicking a traditional automatic transmission. The standard all-wheel-drive system was complemented by the SI-Drive’s Sport mode and the X-Mode off-road traction management system, available from the Premium trim upwards. During testing, the Forester demonstrated competency with decent fuel economy figures, returning 25.9 mpg on various routes. However, while capable, the engine was deemed adequate rather than exhilarating.

The 2022 Subaru Ascent’s substantial interior offered seating for up to eight people with a second-row bench seat, although the third row was tight for adults. The wide rear doors facilitated easy loading, and the panoramic sunroof and rear-side window shades added to passenger comfort. Cargo-wise, the Ascent provided 17.8 cubic feet behind the third row, expanding to 47.5 cubic feet with the third row down, and up to 86.5 cubic feet with both rear rows folded.

The 2023 Subaru Forester, designed for functionality, offered superb outward visibility and easy entry and exit. Rear seat space was ample, although the seating position and support left room for improvement. Versatility extended to the cargo area with 26.9 cubic feet behind the rear seats, expanding to 69.1 cubic feet with seats folded down. The Base trim without a panoramic sunroof boasted even more capacity at 28.9 cubic feet and 74.2 cubic feet respectively. Practical storage solutions dotted throughout the interior allowed for ample placement of personal items.

Tech offerings in the 2022 Subaru Ascent included a 6.5-inch touchscreen infotainment system with essential features like Bluetooth, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto. Stepping up to the Premium trim brought in an 8-inch display with enhancements such as Starlink connected services, including remote engine start and a WiFi hotspot. Unfortunately, the Onyx Edition’s standard stereo system left audiophiles wanting more, as the premium Harman Kardon system was not available on this trim.

Not to be outdone, the 2023 Subaru Forester upgraded its tech amenities, starting with a 6.5-inch touchscreen, and reaching up to an 8-inch screen in higher trims. The system supported Bluetooth, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and satellite radio. However, the voice-recognition system exhibited a lack of reliability, making the use of Apple CarPlay and Android Auto preferable. The Forester's higher trims also offered a quality Harman Kardon audio system, enhancing the auditory experience compared to the Ascent’s Onyx Edition trim.

Safety was a hallmark for Subaru, and the 2022 Ascent proved exceptionally secure with accolades such as the “Top Safety Pick+” from IIHS and five-star ratings from NHTSA, except for a four-star rollover resistance score. Subaru’s EyeSight driver-assistance system was standard, although performance in low sunlight conditions was less than optimal. Moreover, the advanced adaptive cruise control and lane-centering tech needed refinement.

With its next-generation EyeSight, the 2023 Forester took updated safety further with improved software and wider camera views. This enhanced safety suite integrated Automatic Emergency Steering in trims equipped with blind-spot monitoring, except for the Base trim. However, Rear Automatic Braking occasionally misfired, startling occupants.
