2022 Hyundai Tucson Reviews Summary

The redesigned 2022 Hyundai Tucson has to offer a high-tech cabin, comfortable ride, competent engine lineup, and spacious cargo area to keep up with the Joneses in the hot-selling and competitive compact SUV class. It does that, and more, with Hyundai giving plenty of compelling reasons to take the 2022 Tucson for a test drive.

2023 Genesis GV70 Reviews Summary

The definition of luxury has changed. No matter where you look in the various premium vehicle segments, there are entrants that you may not have seen decades ago. From performance SUVs to subcompact crossovers, there are new takes on upscale vehicles. But just as crucially is the entrance of new players. In 2015, the Genesis brand was officially spun off from Hyundai. And with the brand’s expansion into various segments, a compact like the 2023 Genesis GV70 was a must.

The GV70 was introduced for the 2022 model year and for 2023, an all-electric model joins the lineup. We evaluated the GV70 on the whole, but with a special focus on how effective the 2023 Genesis GV70 Electrified is as an EV and as a compact luxury crossover.

2022 Hyundai Tucson

8/10

2023 Genesis GV70

8/10

The 2022 Hyundai Tucson was built on a new platform, offering a long-wheelbase model in the U.S. with two rows of seating and an expanded cargo area. Its front design featured a parametric grille that cleverly concealed LED daytime running lights, Bi-LED headlights, and LED front turn signals, creating a distinctive shape reminiscent of the Aztec Spirit Bird. The side profile borrowed design elements from the Hyundai Elantra, with a silver D-pillar that gave the Tucson a unique floating roof appearance. At the rear, the Tucson sported LED-illuminated toothy taillights, except for the base model, which helped it stand out among compact SUVs. The Tucson rode on 17- or 19-inch wheels, depending on the trim, with high-end models featuring premium fascias, gloss black pillars, and a panoramic sunroof. Inside, the Tucson's cabin was well-appointed, offering standard stain- and odor-resistant cloth seats, with sport combination and leather-trimmed options available on higher trims. The interior design emphasized spaciousness with horizontal lines across the dashboard and an uncluttered aesthetic.

The 2023 Genesis GV70 drew stylistic connections to the G70 compact luxury sedan, particularly above the belt-line, with split-bar headlights and a strong chrome line that visually linked it to its sedan counterpart. The GV70's interior was a testament to luxury, featuring top-notch materials and excellent fit and finish. The design was both contemporary and classic, with climate controls integrated into a curving bezel and a touchscreen that rose organically from the dash. The GV70's dash included a full touchscreen backed by a rotary dial and button controls in the center console, offering a more tactile experience compared to touch capacitive controls. The gas-powered GV70 was available in two trims, 2.5T and 3.5T, while the Electrified GV70 offered Advance and Prestige trims. The base GV70 2.5T came well-equipped with features like power-adjustable front seats, heated front seats, and a hands-free power liftgate. Higher trims added luxury touches such as genuine leather upholstery, ambient cabin lighting, and a panoramic sunroof. The Electrified GV70 Prestige trim impressed with its luxury credentials, featuring cream-colored quilt-stitched seats and a high-contrast interior design.

Performance

2022 Hyundai Tucson

7/10

2023 Genesis GV70

7/10

The 2022 Hyundai Tucson offered two powertrain variants: a 2.5-liter direct-injected four-cylinder engine and a turbocharged 1.6-liter four-cylinder hybrid engine. The ICE engine delivered 187 horsepower and 178 pound-feet of torque, paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission. While not particularly thrilling, it was competent and efficient, targeting 28 mpg combined. The hybrid powertrain was the standout, providing 226 total system horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque, making it more powerful than competitors like the Ford Escape Hybrid and Honda CR-V Hybrid. The Tucson Hybrid achieved impressive fuel efficiency, with 37 mpg in the city and 36 mpg on the highway. The forthcoming Tucson PHEV promised even more power, with an estimated 261 horsepower and 224 pound-feet of torque, along with a projected 25 miles of electric-only range.

The 2023 Genesis GV70 2.5T featured a turbocharged 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine producing 300 horsepower and 311 pound-feet of torque, while the 3.5T boasted a twin-turbocharged 3.5-liter V6 engine with 375 horsepower and 391 pound-feet of torque. Both engines were paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive. The GV70's turbo-four provided ample power for most driving situations, while the V6 catered to performance enthusiasts with its extra grunt and throaty engine note. The GV70 Electrified used a 77.4-kWh battery pack, powering two electric motors for a combined 429 horsepower and 516 lb-ft of torque. It offered a smooth and confident acceleration experience, with a Boost Mode for an extra power surge. The electric GV70 had a range of 236 miles and could charge from 10% to 80% in just 18 minutes on a fast charger. The GV70's handling was well-rounded, balancing comfort and sportiness, with the Electrified version leaning slightly more towards comfort.

Form and function

2022 Hyundai Tucson

2023 Genesis GV70

6/10

The 2022 Hyundai Tucson, a budget-friendly compact SUV, offered a surprisingly upscale interior. It featured a six-way power-adjustable driver's seat as standard, with an eight-way version available on higher trims. The Tucson's new platform allowed for increased passenger and cargo space, with more passenger volume than competitors like the CR-V, RAV4, and Escape. Its 74.8 cubic-foot cargo area was comparable to the Forester, RAV4, and CR-V, and it featured a 60-40 split-folding rear bench seat with a dual-level cargo floor on ICE models. A hands-free liftgate was available on mid-grade models and up.

The 2023 Genesis GV70 provided 56.9 cubic feet of cargo space with the rear seats folded, which was average for the compact luxury SUV segment. With the rear seats in use, it offered 28.9 cubic feet, above average for its class. The GV70 came standard with a hands-free power liftgate. Up front, it featured decently large cupholders in the center console, though the in-door cupholders couldn't accommodate larger water bottles. The center console included a helpful tray with a retractable lid and a typical center console bin. While front-seat passengers could easily find a comfortable seating position, rear legroom was tighter, requiring front-row occupants to slide their seats forward. The rear bench did recline, offering some flexibility for comfort.

2023 Genesis GV70

The 2022 Hyundai Tucson came equipped with an 8-inch infotainment touchscreen, a six-speaker audio system, wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, HD Radio, and two USB ports. A 4.2-inch multi-information display was standard in front of the driver. Higher trims offered a 10.25-inch infotainment touchscreen, but required plugging in devices for Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The larger screen was embedded within a black plastic head unit, which included climate control and radio/media functionality. The touchpoints were responsive, but the narrow steering wheel controls were less user-friendly.

The 2023 Genesis GV70 featured a standard 14.5-inch touchscreen infotainment system with navigation, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto. The touchscreen was user-friendly, with large icons and logical menu navigation. Genesis provided helpful buttons in the center console and a rotary dial for scrolling and selecting, though it was located adjacent to the vehicle's rotary shifter, which could cause confusion. The GV70 included four USB ports, wireless device charging, a Wi-Fi hotspot, and a nine-speaker stereo system. Ambient lighting, a digital instrument panel, and the Genesis digital key were available features.

The 2022 Hyundai Tucson had not been tested by the IIHS or NHTSA. It featured the Hyundai SmartSense Safety Feature suite, including forward collision-avoidance assist, lane-keep assist, automatic high beams, and more. Additional safety features were available, such as blind-spot warning, adaptive cruise control, and a surround-view camera system. Hyundai offered a comprehensive warranty package, including a 10-year/100,000-mile powertrain limited warranty.

The 2023 Genesis GV70 offered a full suite of driver-assistance technology, including forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, and blind-spot monitoring. The 2.5T's Advance Package added a blind-spot camera system and a 360-degree parking camera system, while the 3.5T's Sport Advance package included these features. The GV70 Electrified had most driver-assistance features as standard, with the head-up display available in the Prestige trim.
