2022 Hyundai Ioniq 5 Reviews Summary

The Hyundai Ioniq 5 is the automaker’s debut electric vehicle from its new sub-brand that focuses solely on battery electric-powered mobility. The all-new Ioniq 5 is chock full of battery technology, smart car connectivity, advanced safety, and unique design all at a price point that appeals to the masses.

2022 Jeep Wrangler Reviews Summary

For a long time, the Jeep Wrangler represented a vehicle class of one. Where else could you get a two-door or four-door convertible with removable doors, a fold-down windshield, and go-anywhere off-roading capability wrapped in retro styling cues? Today, the Ford Bronco meets that same description and, in some ways, is superior to the 2022 Jeep Wrangler. But we love this anachronistic throwback of an SUV anyway, warts and all, even if the overall rating appears to suggest otherwise. And a handful of changes to the 2022 Wrangler do nothing but further cement our appreciation of this formerly one-of-a-kind vehicle.

2022 Hyundai Ioniq 5

8/10

2022 Jeep Wrangler

9/10

The 2022 Hyundai Ioniq 5 was a fresh take on electrified mobility, distinct from the original Ioniq. It featured a minimalist yet intricate exterior design, with a focus on Parametric Pixel elements that gave it a concept car vibe. The interior was a stark contrast, offering a serene "Living Space" with sustainable materials and a zero-gravity relaxation mode for the driver.

In contrast, the 2022 Jeep Wrangler maintained its rugged, off-road aesthetic. The High Tide special edition added unique features like a 1.5-inch suspension lift and 35-inch tires, enhancing its adventurous appeal. However, the interior remained basic, prioritizing durability and functionality over luxury, with practical elements like floor drain plugs for easy cleaning.

Performance

2022 Hyundai Ioniq 5

8/10

2022 Jeep Wrangler

7/10

The 2022 Hyundai Ioniq 5 offered two drive configurations, three trims, and three powertrains. The base SE Standard Range had a 168-horsepower motor with a 220-mile range. The extended-range models featured a 225-horsepower motor with a 303-mile range. The AWD variant boasted 320 horsepower and 446 lb-ft of torque but had a reduced range of 256 miles. The Ioniq 5 excelled in providing a quiet, comfortable ride with features like acoustic tires and sound-deadening materials.

The 2022 Jeep Wrangler High Tide came with a 3.6-liter V6 engine with eTorque mild-hybrid electrification, producing 285 horsepower and 260 lb-ft of torque. It featured an eight-speed automatic transmission and Selec-Trac full-time 4WD. Despite its off-road prowess, the Wrangler's fuel economy was a downside, averaging 16.8 mpg. The driving experience was unique, offering a raw, immersive feel that appealed to off-road enthusiasts but might deter those seeking comfort and refinement.

Form and function

2022 Hyundai Ioniq 5

9/10

2022 Jeep Wrangler

4/10

The Hyundai Ioniq 5 utilized the Electric Global Modular Platform (E-GMP), offering a spacious interior with a 118.1-inch wheelbase, longer than the seven-passenger Palisade. It provided 133.7 cubic feet of total interior volume, prioritizing passenger comfort with features like a moveable center console and supportive leatherette seats.

The Jeep Wrangler High Tide's raised suspension made entry and exit challenging, especially for shorter individuals. The interior was basic but functional, with durable cloth upholstery and practical storage solutions. Rear-seat passengers faced similar entry difficulties but enjoyed good visibility and amenities like air conditioning vents and cupholders. Cargo space was ample, with 31.7 cubic feet behind the rear seat and 72.4 cubic feet with the seat folded down.

Technology

6/10

The Hyundai Ioniq 5 impressed with its advanced technology, including a high-voltage, energy-dense system with vehicle-to-load capabilities. It supported ultra-fast charging, reaching 80% battery capacity in 18 minutes. The Ioniq 5 also featured a redesigned Blue Link app, digital key, and 12.3-inch anti-glare screens for the instrument cluster and infotainment.

The Jeep Wrangler High Tide, based on the Sport S trim, had a 7-inch touchscreen with Bluetooth, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto. Optional upgrades included a larger 8.4-inch Uconnect system with satellite radio, a WiFi hotspot, and a premium sound system. Despite its basic tech, the Wrangler offered practical features like remote engine starting and heated front seats.

Safety

10/10

2022 Jeep Wrangler

2/10

The Hyundai Ioniq 5 came with Hyundai SmartSense, a suite of advanced driving assistance systems (ADAS) including blind-spot monitoring, lane-departure warning, and front- and rear-collision avoidance. It also featured Hyundai Highway Drive Assist I, a Level 2 semi-autonomous driving system with machine-learning adaptive cruise control. While crash-safety ratings were not yet available, Hyundai's track record suggested high marks.

The Jeep Wrangler High Tide included the Safety Group and Advanced Safety Group, adding features like blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, adaptive cruise control, and forward-collision warning. However, the Wrangler's crash-test ratings were subpar, with a three-star rollover resistance rating from NHTSA and Marginal ratings from IIHS. Safety features were optional rather than standard, making the Wrangler less appealing from a safety perspective.
