2022 Honda Odyssey Reviews Summary

If you are a minivan aficionado like we are, then you know that the 2022 Honda Odyssey is the most enjoyable one to drive. It has that light, effortless, responsive driving character that Honda bakes into every one of its cars, trucks, SUVs, and minivans. But you also know that the Odyssey’s rivals are successfully outflanking it in terms of stylish design, all-weather capability, electrified efficiency, infotainment technology, and outright luxury.

In response to these new threats, Honda makes no changes to the 2022 Odyssey. Good thing its “original recipe” approach remains pretty tasty.

2022 Toyota Sienna Reviews Summary

The 2022 Toyota Sienna hybrid minivan rolls into the second model year following a redesign for 2021. Last year’s successful makeover with a standard hybrid powertrain returns unchanged, but a new Woodland trim level is available to attract adventurous families (or those who want to look that way).

Look and feel

2022 Honda Odyssey

7/10

2022 Toyota Sienna

9/10

The 2022 Honda Odyssey was a minivan that we often recommended to families due to its practical features. Its sliding side doors made it easy to load toddlers into rear-facing child safety seats, and its comfortable third-row seat accommodated additional passengers like grandparents or carpool kids without hassle. The Odyssey also offered significant cargo space, rivaling that of a Chevrolet Suburban when the third-row seat was folded down and the second-row seats were removed. Despite the minivan stigma, the 2022 Honda Odyssey managed to incorporate a sense of style, especially in the Elite trim with its dark gray 19-inch aluminum wheels and dramatic hockey-stick character lines.

The 2022 Toyota Sienna, on the other hand, embraced its minivan identity while incorporating SUV-like styling cues. Toyota's commitment to the minivan segment was evident in the Sienna's design, which featured a macho front end and cleverly concealed sliding door tracks. The interior was designed to avoid the typical minivan feel, offering ample storage and comfortable seating across all three rows. The Sienna's flexible seating arrangements and power-operated doors added to its practicality, making it a strong contender for families needing a versatile vehicle.

Performance

2022 Honda Odyssey

7/10

2022 Toyota Sienna

8/10

The 2022 Honda Odyssey was powered by a 3.5-liter V6 engine producing 280 horsepower and 262 pound-feet of torque, paired with a 10-speed automatic transmission. It was a front-wheel-drive vehicle with an EPA fuel economy estimate of 22 mpg in combined driving. While it lacked the hybrid and all-wheel-drive options available in competitors like the Toyota Sienna and Chrysler Pacifica, the Odyssey offered a more engaging driving experience. During a test drive in Southern California, the Odyssey averaged 22.6 mpg and demonstrated quick acceleration, responsive handling, and composure on various road types. However, its brakes tended to overheat on long descents, leading to pedal vibration and audible grumbling.

The 2022 Toyota Sienna featured a hybrid powertrain with a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine and two electric motors, producing a combined 243 horsepower. It came standard with front-wheel drive, but all-wheel drive was available on all trim levels. The Sienna used an electronically controlled continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT) and offered four selectable drive modes. Its handling was surprisingly good for a minivan, thanks to the Toyota Next Generation Architecture (TNGA) platform. The Sienna's fuel economy was a standout feature, with EPA estimates of 36 mpg for front-wheel-drive models and 35 mpg for all-wheel-drive models. The hybrid system's battery pack was tucked under the front seats, and it came with a 10-year/150,000-mile warranty.

Form and function

2022 Honda Odyssey

8/10

2022 Toyota Sienna

9/10

The 2022 Honda Odyssey offered easy access with wide-opening doors and a lower ride height. Inside, the Odyssey Elite featured quality leather seats, tri-zone automatic climate control, and an onboard vacuum cleaner. Storage was abundant, with numerous compartments and a handy floor tray. The second-row Magic Slide seats provided flexibility for child seat placement and easier access to the third row. The third-row seat was comfortable for adults, and the cargo space behind it measured 32.8 cubic feet. Folding the third-row seat increased cargo space to 88.8 cubic feet, and removing the second-row seats expanded it to 144.9 cubic feet.

The 2022 Toyota Sienna was designed to be a family workhorse, capable of carrying a full 4x8 sheet of plywood with the tailgate closed. Its sliding second-row seats added flexibility for loading cargo. The Sienna offered 33.5 cubic feet of cargo space behind the third row, 75.2 cubic feet behind the second row, and 101 cubic feet behind the first row. It also had a 3,500-pound towing capacity. The third-row bench seat stored easily into the floor, and each row had ample storage and cupholders. Power-operated sliding doors and tailgate with foot-motion triggers added convenience for busy families.

Technology

2022 Honda Odyssey

5/10

2022 Toyota Sienna

9/10

The 2022 Honda Odyssey Elite was equipped with an 8-inch touchscreen infotainment display, satellite radio, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto starting from the EX trim. The Touring trim added navigation and HondaLink connected services, including WiFi hotspot access. CabinWatch and CabinTalk technologies were available on Touring and Elite trims, along with a rear-seat entertainment system featuring a 10.2-inch display. The Elite trim also included an 11-speaker premium audio system and a wireless charging pad. However, the Odyssey's infotainment system was considered outdated, with a small screen and limited voice command functionality.

The 2022 Toyota Sienna came standard with a 9-inch touchscreen, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Amazon Alexa, and SiriusXM. It also included multiple USB ports and a three-month trial of AT&T WiFi Connect. Higher trims offered a 12-speaker JBL audio system and a rear-seat entertainment system with an 11.6-inch display. The Sienna featured a color multi-information display, with a 10-inch head-up display available on Platinum models. Limited and Platinum trims could also upgrade to a digital rearview mirror. The Sienna's technology package was comprehensive, though it lacked wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

Safety

2022 Honda Odyssey

8/10

2022 Toyota Sienna

9/10

The 2022 Honda Odyssey came standard with Honda Sensing, which included adaptive cruise control, forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assist, and lane-centering assist. It also had automatic high-beam headlights and a rear-seat reminder system. Blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert were available on EX and higher trims. The Odyssey earned a five-star overall rating from the NHTSA and a Top Safety Pick+ rating from the IIHS. However, Honda Sensing's performance was sometimes abrupt, and the blind-spot monitoring system's warning light was poorly positioned.

The 2022 Toyota Sienna received a Top Safety Pick+ rating from the IIHS and a five-star rating from the NHTSA. It came standard with Toyota Safety Sense 2.0, which included adaptive cruise control, lane-centering, forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, lane departure warning, automatic high beams, and traffic sign recognition. The Sienna also had 10 airbags, multiple LATCH child-seat connectors, a rear-seat reminder system, tire-pressure monitoring, and an inflator kit. A spare tire was available, mounted in the cargo space wall for safety and convenience.
