The 2022 Chevrolet Suburban carried forward the brand's full-size truck design language from its 2021 redesign. Sharing its exterior styling with the shorter Tahoe SUV and the Silverado 1500 pickup, the Suburban's tall hood, long proportions, and large wheels gave it a supersized appearance. The grille, fascia, and wheel designs varied by trim level, offering buyers a fair degree of customization. The RST trim, with its Cherry Red Tintcoat exterior and 22-inch bright-machined black-painted wheels, presented a sporty look. Inside, the Suburban offered a spacious cabin ranging from economically comfortable on the base LS trim to plush on the top-spec High Country. However, the predominantly black interior of the RST trim made the cabin feel a bit dark despite its spaciousness.

The 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee L, introduced as a longer version of the standard two-row Grand Cherokee, was 11.4 inches longer to accommodate a third row of seats. The extra mass and bigger caboose blended seamlessly into the body, making the standard Grand Cherokee look truncated. The Grand Cherokee L was elegant and recognizable as a Jeep from any angle, with its seven-slot rectangular grille, U-shaped wheel arches, and blunt front end. The high-end Summit and Summit Reserve trims finished the design with black roofs, larger wheels, and more chrome. Inside, the Grand Cherokee L offered a luxurious feel with dual high-resolution screens, real wood, aluminum, quilted Nappa leather, and a faux-suede roof. Even in all-black, the interior had enough detail and contrast to keep passengers comfortable and visually stimulated.

The 2022 Chevrolet Suburban offered three engine choices: a 5.3-liter V8, a 6.2-liter V8, and a new-for-2022 3.0-liter turbodiesel inline-six, all paired with a 10-speed automatic transmission. The 5.3-liter V8, standard on all but the Premier, produced 355 horsepower and 383 pound-feet of torque. The 6.2-liter V8, standard on the High Country and available on the RST, Z71, and Premier, produced 420 hp and 460 lb-ft. The 3.0-liter six-cylinder diesel, new for 2022, delivered 277 hp and 460 lb-ft of torque, providing excellent fuel economy and ample hauling capability. The Suburban's maximum towing capacity was 8,300 pounds. Our RST test vehicle, equipped with the 6.2-liter V8, performed admirably during an 80-mile tow test, pulling a Chevrolet Impala sedan on an open car-hauler trailer with ease.

The 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee L offered two familiar engines: a 3.6-liter V6 and a 5.7-liter V8, both paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission. The V6 produced 293 hp and 260 lb-ft of torque, which felt insufficient for a vehicle this heavy. The V8, available only on the Overland, Summit, and Summit Reserve trims with 4WD, produced 357 hp and 390 lb-ft, offering a more satisfying performance. The Grand Cherokee L also offered a 4xe plug-in hybrid powertrain, pairing a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine with a 17.3-kilowatt-hour battery pack and two electric motors, delivering 375 hp and 470 lb-ft of torque. The V6 had an EPA-estimated fuel economy of 18 mpg city, 25 mpg highway, and 21 mpg combined, while the V8 was notably worse at 14/22/17. The Grand Cherokee L's chassis provided a stellar ride, with optional air suspension offering five ride height settings and excellent handling for a vehicle of its size.

The 2022 Chevrolet Suburban excelled in space, offering ample room for passengers, cargo, and even pets. With the optional front-row bench seat, the Suburban could hold up to nine occupants. The third row was quite livable, with adequate headroom, knee room, and legroom for adults. The Suburban had 41.5 cubic feet of space behind the third row, expanding to 144.7 cubic feet with the second and third rows folded flat. The second-row seats could slide forward or backward up to 5.5 inches, and both the second and third rows folded flat with ease. However, the Suburban's size made it challenging to maneuver and park in tight spaces, and it might not fit in some garages due to its height.

The 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee L offered plenty of space in all directions, even in the third row, which could fit an average adult comfortably. Second-row captain's chairs came standard for six-person seating, with a 60/40 split bench seat available as an option. The Grand Cherokee L's Uconnect 5 infotainment system featured a sleek interface with physical switches for climate and stereo controls. The Laredo and Altitude trims came with an 8.4-inch touchscreen and a 10-inch digital instrument panel, while higher trims featured a 10.1-inch touchscreen. However, the air vents were too small, requiring the fan to be kept on high, which was quite loud.

Google built-in, including Google Maps, Google Assistant, and Google Play Store access, was also standard on LT and above. The Chevrolet Infotainment 3 System with an 8-inch touchscreen was standard on the LS, while a 10.2-inch Chevrolet Infotainment 3 Premium System was standard on LT and above. Wireless device charging and a WiFi hotspot were standard across the board. The Suburban LS came with a basic six-speaker audio system, while higher trims featured a nine-speaker Bose audio system or a Bose 10-speaker Surround with CenterPoint audio system.
