2022 BMW 2 Series Reviews Summary

Sent as a replacement for the discontinued BMW 1 Series, the 2 Series has flourished in the entry-level luxury car segment, outselling its competition last year. Redesigned for 2022, the BMW 2 Series features a refreshed look, larger proportions, increased power, and more performance than is reasonable for a subcompact.

2023 MINI Cooper Reviews Summary

You either join the MINI camp or shake your head “no.” There has never been a middle ground with a MINI. That’s the point—to drive a fun-looking, fun-to-drive small car that’s unlike anything else in the neighborhood. For 2023, the MINI Cooper offers a limited-run Resolute Edition and a few new paint colors. We tested a two-door Hardtop John Cooper Works (JCW) while participating in a rally with more than 700 MINI owners. Maybe next time you’ll join them with your new MINI.

2022 BMW 2 Series

8/10

2023 MINI Cooper

8/10

The 2022 BMW 2 Series presented a fresh exterior design that avoided the aggressive front fascia seen in other BMW models. It was available in both rear-wheel-drive and all-wheel-drive configurations, with the 230i Coupe and M240i xDrive Coupe as the two-door options. The four-door Gran Coupe continued with front-wheel-drive and all-wheel-drive variants. The 2 Series Coupe was longer, wider, and lower than its predecessor, with a wheelbase extended by two inches. The design featured a wider kidney grille, triangular front air curtains, and flared fenders, giving it an aerodynamic and agile appearance. The M240i xDrive Coupe had a more performance-oriented style with shadowy M-type accents and the M Shadowline package. The interior was driver-focused, with standard perforated SensaTec upholstery and optional Vernasca leather. An 8.8-inch infotainment touchscreen was standard, with a 10.25-inch upgrade available. The M240i xDrive offered more standard features, including keyless entry and a larger moonroof.

The 2023 MINI Cooper, available as a two-door hatchback, four-door hatch, or two-door convertible, maintained its unique and playful design. Larger than its predecessors, it still remained compact compared to other vehicles. The Cooper's design was simple and authentic, with a short rear end and flat roof. The 2023 model introduced a gradient paint effect and 18-inch wheels with red brake calipers. The interior featured Chesterfield leather seats with diamond-patterned stitching and a distinctive dashboard with a giant circular touchscreen. The JCW model, with its 2.0-liter turbocharged engine, was the quickest Cooper, offering a fun driving experience. The interior was high-quality, with a mix of classic and modern elements, including a manual gear shifter and toggle switches. The Cooper's design and features emphasized its playful and distinctive character.

Performance

2022 BMW 2 Series

7/10

2023 MINI Cooper

7/10

The 2022 BMW 2 Series Coupe delivered impressive performance for a subcompact car. The 230i Coupe featured a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine with 255 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque, while the M240i xDrive boasted a 3.0-liter turbocharged inline-six with 382 horsepower and 369 pound-feet of torque. The 230i Coupe accelerated to 60 mph in 5.5 seconds, while the M240i xDrive achieved it in just 4.1 seconds. Both models had a top speed of either 130 mph or 155 mph, depending on specifications. The 2 Series came with an eight-speed Sport automatic transmission, offering smooth shifts and quick responses with paddle shifters. The M240i xDrive included performance features like an aerodynamic kit, adaptive M suspension, and M Sport brakes. The xDrive AWD system provided stability, while the RWD 230i Coupe offered a more engaging driving experience. However, the steering feel was criticized for being numb, and the driving experience felt disconnected.

The 2023 MINI Cooper JCW was the quickest Cooper, equipped with a 2.0-liter turbocharged inline-four engine producing 228 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque. The engine, shared with BMW models, offered smooth revs and strong performance. The six-speed manual transmission had an abrupt clutch take-up, making it ideal for learning manual driving. The JCW's handling was enjoyable, with flat cornering and a stiff suspension. The base MINI Cooper models had a 1.5-liter turbocharged inline-three engine with 134 horsepower, while the Cooper S models featured a detuned version of the JCW engine with 189 horsepower. The electric MINI Cooper SE offered 114 miles of range. The JCW's handling was nimble, but the steering lacked immediacy, detracting from the promised "go-kart" experience. The ride was firm, and the brakes were impressive, providing strong stopping power.

Form and function

2022 BMW 2 Series

5/10

2023 MINI Cooper

6/10

The 2022 BMW 2 Series was compact, with rear seats suitable for children or short trips. The front seats offered more space, but the slanted roofline limited rear headroom. The trunk had a shorter lid, making it challenging to load bulky items. However, the 40/20/40-split fold-down rear seats allowed for increased cargo capacity, with 10 cubic feet of space available. The interior featured soft touchpoints and improved ergonomics, with multifunction buttons on the leather-wrapped sport steering wheel. The lower console area had a layout similar to other BMW models, enhancing usability.

The 2023 MINI Cooper offered good outward visibility and ample front seat legroom and headroom. The two-door model's rear bench and cargo hold were limited, with nine cubic feet of cargo space, expandable to 34 cubic feet with the seats folded. The four-door Cooper models provided more cargo space, with 13 cubic feet and 41 cubic feet with the seats up and down, respectively. Convertible models had eight cubic feet of cargo space, with a tailgate that folded down for easier access. The convertible's roof rails allowed the fabric section to slide back like a sunroof. The instrument panel had a matte finish to reduce glare, and the infotainment system used both a touchscreen and console buttons. The dashboard's glowing ring responded to various actions, adding a playful touch to the driving experience.

The 2022 BMW 2 Series featured an 8.8-inch touchscreen and a 5.1-inch driver information display as standard. The infotainment system, equipped with BMW Live Cockpit Plus, offered over-the-air updates, cloud-based navigation, real-time traffic updates, and connected services. Additional connectivity features included a WiFi 4G LTE hotspot, two USB ports, and wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration. The optional Live Cockpit Professional upgraded the infotainment to a 10.25-inch touchscreen and a 12.3-inch fully digital display. The BMW Digital Key allowed remote access and control via the My BMW App. The standard audio system had 10 speakers, with an optional Harman Kardon 14-speaker system available.

The 2023 MINI Cooper came with an 8.8-inch touchscreen, Apple CarPlay, SiriusXM satellite radio, connected apps, LED headlights, and Union Jack-patterned taillights. Cooper S models in Signature trim added a panoramic moonroof and heated leatherette seats. The infotainment system used reskinned BMW iDrive software, with a home screen that displayed the map and music side by side. The MINI Cooper included unique features like an Openometer, a "checkup" with a MINI wearing sunglasses, and cartoonish sounds and chimes. However, the infotainment system lacked the advanced features found in newer BMW models.

Safety

2022 BMW 2 Series

8/10

2023 MINI Cooper

6/10

The 2022 BMW 2 Series came with Active Driving Assistant, which included active blind-spot monitoring, forward-collision warning with pedestrian detection, lane departure warning, rear cross-traffic alert, and speed limit information. Other standard safety features included a rearview camera, park distance control, and adaptive cruise control. Optional safety features included adaptive front LED headlights, automatic high beams, adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go, and a 360-degree surround view. The BMW Drive Recorder could record driving footage using onboard cameras. The 2022 BMW 2 Series had not been rated by the IIHS or NHTSA.

The 2023 MINI Cooper featured eight airbags, including two front knee airbags, rear parking sensors, forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, and lane-departure warning. However, blind-spot monitoring and other advanced safety features were not available. Adaptive cruise control was offered on certain versions with automatic transmission. The NHTSA had not rated the 2023 MINI Cooper, but the IIHS had given the structurally identical 2014 model the highest "good" rating in five out of six crash tests.
