2021 Volkswagen Atlas Reviews Summary

Introduced for the 2018 model year, the Atlas is Volkswagen's latest attempt to win over American buyers. Built in Chattanooga, Tennessee, the VW Atlas competes in the three-row crossover SUV segment against well-established nameplates like the Ford Explorer, Honda Pilot, and Toyota Highlander. Changes for 2021 are limited to exterior styling tweaks and a reshuffled option list. VW also offers the two-row Atlas Cross Sport.

2022 Mercedes-Benz GLB Reviews Summary

Designed for Europe’s narrow city streets and tight parking spaces, the 2022 Mercedes-Benz GLB-Class aims to maximize utility in an SUV that is minimally sized. 2021 Volkswagen Atlas

6/10

2022 Mercedes-Benz GLB

5/10

The 2021 Volkswagen Atlas underwent a styling refresh that included new front and rear bumpers, standard LED headlights and taillights, and a new grille design, adding 2.4 inches to its length. This gave the Atlas a more extroverted appearance compared to its predecessor, although some elements like the fake chrome exhaust tips were considered less appealing. The R-Line trim added sportier aesthetics with unique bumpers and side skirts. Despite these cosmetic changes, the Atlas retained its MQB platform, shared with other VW models like the Jetta and Golf, showcasing its versatility. The interior followed a minimalist design, with a standard seven-seat configuration across three rows. However, the material quality, especially in the mid-level SE with Technology trim, was criticized for its cheap feel, with plastics and simulated trims failing to impress.

The 2022 Mercedes-Benz GLB, positioned between the GLA and GLC in Mercedes' lineup, offered a blend of comfort and style. Available in GLB250 and AMG GLB35 specifications, it featured a turbocharged 2.0-liter engine with varying power outputs. The AMG GLB35 boasted a more powerful drivetrain and sophisticated AWD system. The interior was a highlight, with high-definition displays, artistic air vents, and ambient lighting creating a luxurious atmosphere. However, the controls required some acclimation, and the road noise, especially with the optional 21-inch wheels, was notable. Despite these quirks, the GLB's design and features made it a compelling choice for those seeking a compact luxury SUV.

Performance

2021 Volkswagen Atlas

6/10

2022 Mercedes-Benz GLB

8/10

The 2021 Volkswagen Atlas offered two engine options: a 2.0-liter turbocharged inline-four producing 235 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque, and a 3.6-liter VR6 engine with 276 horsepower and 266 pound-feet of torque. Both engines were paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission, with standard FWD and optional 4Motion AWD. The driving experience with the base engine and AWD was underwhelming, with adequate acceleration but rough shifts. Handling was truck-like, and the ride quality was poor, with every road imperfection felt in the cabin. The Atlas had a towing capacity of 5,000 pounds with the VR6 engine, but its fuel economy ratings were unimpressive, with the four-cylinder engine achieving 22 mpg combined with FWD.

The 2022 Mercedes-Benz GLB featured a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine in both the GLB250 and AMG GLB35 versions. The AMG GLB35 delivered 302 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque, significantly more than the GLB250. It also included an AMG SpeedShift eight-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission and AMG Performance variable 4Matic AWD. The AMG GLB35 accelerated to 60 mph in 5.1 seconds, with a combined fuel economy rating of 22 mpg. The AMG High-Performance Braking System and AMG Ride Control adaptive damping sport suspension emphasized performance, though the ride was firm and the powertrain exhibited some lag. The GLB250, while not as fast, was better suited for daily driving.

Form and function

2021 Volkswagen Atlas

7/10

2022 Mercedes-Benz GLB

8/10

The 2021 Volkswagen Atlas was designed as a family hauler, offering average passenger and cargo space for its segment. It provided 96.8 cubic feet of cargo space behind the front seats and 20.6 cubic feet with all seats up. The third-row legroom was commendable, but second-row legroom was lacking. The second-row bench seat was uncomfortable, with thin cushions. The Atlas featured a tall driving position, but forward visibility was limited. It included up to five USB ports and an optional wireless charging pad, along with 17 cupholders. Parking sensors and optional active park assist were available to aid in maneuvering.

The 2022 Mercedes-Benz GLB catered to urbanites needing a roomy yet compact SUV. It offered an optional third-row seat for children, though it reduced cargo space. Standard features included dual-zone climate control and eight-way power-adjustable front seats. The GLB provided 22 cubic feet of cargo space, expandable to 62 cubic feet with the second row folded. The interior was comfortable, with easy access and a tall seating position. However, the optional third-row seat was less practical in the U.S. market.

Technology

The 2021 Volkswagen Atlas came with Bluetooth and Apple CarPlay/Android Auto compatibility. The base S trim had a 6.5-inch infotainment screen, while higher trims featured an 8-inch screen. The Digital Cockpit was available on select trims, offering a 10.3-inch digital display. The MIBIII infotainment system, introduced later in the model year, added multi-phone pairing and improved voice recognition. A 12-speaker Fender audio system was optional, and a built-in 4G LTE WiFi hotspot was available.

The 2022 Mercedes-Benz GLB featured the MBUX infotainment system with a 10.25-inch digital gauge cluster and touchscreen. Standard features included Bluetooth, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto. The Premium Package added satellite radio, while the Multimedia Package included navigation with augmented reality. Optional upgrades included wireless charging, a Burmester audio system, and a head-up display. MBUX was user-friendly, with natural voice recognition and multiple control methods.

2022 Mercedes-Benz GLB

The 2021 Volkswagen Atlas received top ratings in IIHS crash tests, except for a "marginal" rating for child-seat anchors. The 2020 model received a five-star overall rating from NHTSA. Standard safety features included automatic emergency braking and blind-spot monitoring, with adaptive cruise control and lane-keep assist available on higher trims. The Atlas was set to receive more advanced driver aids later in the model year.

The 2022 Mercedes-Benz GLB lacked the optional Driver Assistance Package, which included adaptive cruise control and lane-centering assistance. Standard safety features included Active Brake Assist, blind-spot monitoring, and rain-sensing wipers. Crash-test ratings were unavailable.
