2021 Volkswagen Passat Reviews SummaryDespite its German branding, the 2021 Volkswagen Passat is an All-American midsize sedan. It was developed specifically for the United States market, and it’s built in Chattanooga, Tennessee. In 2011, when the Americanized Passat was launched, VW thought the sedan was the key to dominating the U.S. market. Midsize sedans like the Honda Accord and Toyota Camry were still the default choice for most buyers at that time, after all. A lot has changed since then—SUVs are surging in popularity, and a diesel-emissions scandal has forced VW to focus more on electric cars—but the Passat rolls on. With the flashier Arteon now in the lineup, however, the Passat has been repositioned as VW's value-focused midsize sedan. The Passat got a significant update for the 2020 model year, so changes for 2021 are fairly limited. The previously-available Passat SEL trim level is gone, leaving just the base S, SE, and R-Line models. Adaptive cruise control is now standard across the board, and some trim levels get more standard equipment as well. Our test car was a mid-level SE model. | |

The 2021 Lexus IS was a statement of athletic elegance, with its dynamic design capturing motion even at a standstill. Its sleek roofline and compact cabin gave it a sporty appearance, while the signature spindle grille and narrow headlights added an assertive touch. Inside, the IS featured a tastefully simple dashboard with a retro hi-fi feel, aligning with its bold exterior. However, the analog clock seemed outdated amidst the modern aesthetic.
In contrast, the 2021 Volkswagen Passat maintained a more understated look, reminiscent of the 1990s jellybean sedans. Its aerodynamic shape contributed to a drag coefficient of 0.28, though this didn't significantly enhance fuel economy. The Passat's exterior was marked by LED lights and alloy wheels, with the R-Line trim adding sportier elements. Inside, the Passat's clean, functional design prioritized analog controls for ease of use, though some might find the interior plain and lacking in vibrant materials.

The 2021 Lexus IS was engineered for the luxury sports sedan category, featuring the "Lexus Driving Signature" for seamless operation. The IS 300 RWD had a 2.0-liter turbocharged engine with 241 horsepower, while the AWD version had a 3.5-liter V6 producing 260 hp. The IS 350 models offered 311 hp from the same V6. RWD models had an eight-speed automatic transmission, while AWD models had a six-speed. The IS boasted a top speed of 143 mph, with 0-60 mph times ranging from 6.9 to 5.6 seconds. Fuel efficiency varied, with the IS 300 RWD achieving 21/31/25 mpg.
The 2021 Volkswagen Passat offered a single powertrain: a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine with 174 horsepower and 206 pound-feet of torque, paired with a six-speed automatic transmission and FWD. While the torque was impressive, power delivery felt uneven, especially during highway overtakes. The Passat lacked the sportiness of competitors like the Honda Accord and Mazda 6, offering a plain driving experience. Ride quality and cabin noise were adequate but unremarkable.
The 2021 Lexus IS focused on driver-centered form and function, with an adjustable driver position and comfortable seats. The F Sport trim included bolstered seats with heating and ventilation. The IS used NuLuxe synthetic upholstery, offering eco-friendly and easy-to-clean benefits. Storage was ample, with various compartments and a 10.8 cubic feet trunk.
The 2021 Volkswagen Passat emphasized rear legroom with 39.1 inches, though front legroom was limited. The driving position was uncomfortable, with inadequate thigh support. The Passat offered 15.9 cubic feet of cargo space, more than some rivals but less than others. In-cabin storage was limited, but controls were well-placed and easy to use.
The 2021 Lexus IS introduced a touchscreen infotainment system with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. It included various connected services with free trial periods, such as Lexus Enform Safety Connect and Service Connect. The Mark Levinson 17-speaker audio system was a recommended option for audiophiles.
The 2021 Volkswagen Passat featured the MIB2 infotainment system with a 6.3-inch touchscreen, Apple CarPlay/Android Auto, and SiriusXM. R-Line models added navigation and a Fender audio system. The Passat's tech was simple, with basic driver aids and no flashy features like the Digital Cockpit.
The 2021 Lexus IS had not been rated by IIHS or NHTSA but was expected to perform well. It included the Lexus Safety System+ 2.5 with features like a pre-collision system, lane-departure warning, and adaptive cruise control. Additional safety features included blind-spot monitoring and a backup camera.
The 2021 Volkswagen Passat received top "good" scores from IIHS, though its headlights were rated "marginal." It offered adaptive cruise control, forward-collision warning, and other driver-assistance features. Notable safety systems included the Automatic Post-Collision Braking System and Intelligent Crash Response System.
