2021 Jeep Cherokee Reviews Summary

The KL-generation Cherokee launched as a 2014 model and almost immediately began swirling in controversy. Jeep hadn’t offered a Cherokee in the United States since the 2001 model year, when the XJ Cherokee disappeared, replaced by two generations of the Jeep Liberty.

There was great excitement for this all-new Jeep. Lots of fans were hoping for a redo of the 1984 to 2001 Jeep Cherokee that really helped to define the midsize SUV class with a unibody and legendary toughness. “The 2014 Cherokee feels planted on the road, more carlike than trucklike…” read an early review in Car and Driver. A separate review from the same publication read: “If you have eyes, you’ve noticed that this Cherokee, code-named KL, makes no design references, other than with the grille, to the iconic, rectilinear XJ Cherokee.”

But the automotive industry isn’t necessarily in the business of fueling nostalgia. It’s interested in what it can sell in great numbers in the future, not what people liked 30 years ago. And what we’ve realized over the years is that the Cherokee is really good at what it does, and it’s capable of doing a lot more than you’d expect.

Jeep sells these at a rate of 240,000 annually, in a good year. The best the Jeep Liberty it replaced ever managed was 166,883 units before dropping off the face of the Earth entirely. Clearly, Jeep knew something we didn’t when it released the Cherokee.

2021 Jeep Grand Cherokee Reviews Summary

There is a redesigned 2021 Jeep Grand Cherokee coming soon—and this isn’t it. In a confusing turn of events, the all-new 2021 Grand Cherokee L is a three-row SUV, while this decade-old 2021 Grand Cherokee is a two-row SUV. Now, with that clear-as-mud distinction between very different vehicles with nearly identical names, let’s examine why you still might want to try the old Grand Cherokee, and why you might wish to wait.

2021 Jeep Cherokee

7/10

2021 Jeep Grand Cherokee

9/10

In the realm of design, both the Jeep Cherokee and Grand Cherokee underwent various degrees of stylistic evolution over the years. Initially, the Cherokee was met with mixed opinions regarding its styling, especially the unique front grille and headlight design. Although these elements first appeared ungainly, over time they have come to be appreciated for creating a distinctly robust, if slightly unconventional, aesthetic. This transformation in public opinion demonstrates how familiarity can shape design appreciation. Depending on the trim, the visual appeal varies significantly. The entry-level Latitude, for example, is rather plain, whereas higher trims like the 80th Anniversary Edition feature upgraded aesthetics such as 19-inch wheels and painted body cladding that enhance its appeal.

Conversely, the 2021 Grand Cherokee has benefited from a design that has aged remarkably well, maintaining a balance between rugged utility and upscale elegance. Its large wheels and flared fenders contribute to a commanding presence. It defies simple categorization, blending attributes of mainstream, luxury, and performance SUVs. This model benefits from minor updates across its range, which spans from affordable Laredo to the plush Summit trim featuring luxury appointments and advanced technology options. Despite its interior showing signs of aging, exterior styling elements like the Platinum Series Group add to its upscale look and feel.

Performance

2021 Jeep Cherokee

2021 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Both the Jeep Cherokee and Grand Cherokee offer a range of powertrains tailored to diverse driving needs, from daily commuting to robust off-roading. The Cherokee provides three engine choices. The base model features a 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine with a modest 180 horsepower, while the more powerful options include a 3.2-liter V-6 with 271 horsepower and a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder that provides a similar horsepower but greater torque. Despite these options, acceleration remains merely adequate rather than exhilarating. Cherokee's off-road capabilities, especially in the Trailhawk trim, are commendable due to its Jeep Active Drive Lock and other specialized systems intended for challenging terrains.

In contrast, the Grand Cherokee’s performance is defined by its standard 3.6-liter V6 engine offering 295 horsepower, with the option to upgrade to a 5.7-liter Hemi V8 for a more potent 360 horsepower. This engine not only provides thrilling acceleration but also enhances towing capabilities. Its advanced Quadra-Trac II 4WD system and Quadra-Lift air suspension offer a versatile driving experience, balancing between efficient highway driving and capable off-road performance. This makes the Grand Cherokee adept at both urban cruising and taking on rugged landscapes.

Form and function

2021 Jeep Cherokee

7/10

2021 Jeep Grand Cherokee

7/10

In terms of utility and practicality, both Jeep models offer unique selling points. The 2021 Cherokee, positioned between smaller and larger Jeep models, leans towards everyday convenience but falls short on cargo capacity, offering only 55 cubic feet with rear seats folded down. This places it behind competitors in the compact SUV segment. However, its passenger space is sufficient and its simple interior design, depending on the trim, ranges from basic to more luxurious appointments.

Meanwhile, the Grand Cherokee stands out with a more generous 68.3 cubic feet of maximum cargo space and a well-appointed cabin, especially in higher trims like the Summit with its quilted leather and real wood accents. Though its rear seat legroom can be tight for tall adults, overall passenger comfort is high, supported by premium materials and sophisticated design touches.

Technology

2021 Jeep Cherokee

9/10

2021 Jeep Grand Cherokee

7/10

When it comes to infotainment and technology, both vehicles display strengths in different areas. The Cherokee boasts the Uconnect system, recognized for its user-friendly interface. It supports essential features like Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. It also includes practical considerations like a 4G WiFi hotspot and integration with Amazon Alexa, ensuring connectivity and convenience for drivers.

The Grand Cherokee, although featuring an older generation of the Uconnect system, still impresses with fast response times, intuitive controls, and advanced features like SiriusXM services and a premium Harman Kardon sound system. However, it lacks some modern amenities expected in newer models, hinting at the need for an upcoming update which is realized in the next model year’s redesign.

Safety

2021 Jeep Cherokee

7/10

2021 Jeep Grand Cherokee

4/10

On safety, the Cherokee offers a solid base of active safety features across all trims, but its crash test results could deter those for whom safety ratings are a priority. Despite earning generally good ratings for crashworthiness, certain areas like headlight performance received lower scores.

The Grand Cherokee, despite its robust build and advanced safety features available in higher trims, shows weaknesses in important crash test ratings from the IIHS. Particularly concerning are the ratings for frontal-impact collisions. While the NHTSA ratings are stronger, potential buyers should weigh these factors carefully.
