2021 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid Reviews Summary

Over the past two decades, our understanding of what a hybrid can be has changed. Hybrids have grown from standalone models like the Toyota Prius to more mainstream SUVs and sedans. Today, many of the most popular sedans on the road are offered with hybrid powertrains, including the 2021 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid. It offers all the trappings of a comfortable, well-equipped midsize sedan with a fuel-efficient powertrain that also delivers solid performance.

2022 MINI Cooper Reviews Summary

MINI characterizes its lineup as the “definitive” premium small cars in the United States market. Based on a BMW platform, equipped with BMW engines, and featuring BMW technology, MINIs can substantiate this claim through engineering. But it’s the range of choices and personalization options that make them unlike any other premium small cars.

Naturally, this is true of the refreshed 2022 MINI Convertible, which is available in Cooper, Cooper S, and John Cooper Works (JCW) specification and with Classic, Signature, or Iconic trim. Once you’ve made those decisions, you can select from a wide variety of colors, materials, wheels, packages, and options to make your MINI your own. Or you can choose a pre-packaged special edition like our Sidewalk Edition test car.

2021 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid

8/10

2022 MINI Cooper

7/10

The 2021 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid, a continuation of the eighth-generation Sonata introduced in 2020, presented a bold and aggressive design that stood out in the hybrid midsize sedan market. Despite its catfish-like styling, the Sonata Hybrid was eye-catching, especially with its matte gray paint and aerodynamic features. Inside, the cabin was more conventional, offering a refined and comfortable environment with soft-touch surfaces and a modern infotainment system. The seats were supportive, making long trips pleasant for both front and rear passengers. The Sonata Hybrid was available in three trims: Blue, SEL, and Limited, each offering a range of features from basic comforts to high-tech amenities like a solar panel roof and leather upholstery.

In contrast, the 2022 MINI Cooper retained its iconic design while incorporating modern updates. The refreshed model featured restyled bumpers, a new grille, and standard LED headlights, maintaining its distinctive MINI charm. The interior combined retro aesthetics with modern technology, allowing for personalization through various colors and materials. The MINI Convertible, despite its awkward proportions, promised a fun driving experience with its open-top design. However, the emphasis on form over function resulted in limited practicality, with rear seats and storage space being minimal. The Sidewalk Edition added exclusive features, but the overall design prioritized style over utility.

Performance

2021 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid

7/10

2022 MINI Cooper

4/10

The 2021 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid was powered by a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine paired with an electric motor, delivering a combined 192 horsepower through a six-speed automatic transmission. The solar panel roof on the Limited trim added about two miles per day to the driving range. The Sonata Hybrid offered solid acceleration and a smooth transition between electric and gasoline power. It featured multiple drive modes, including Eco, Sport, Custom, and Smart, allowing drivers to tailor the driving experience. The steering was light yet precise, and the brakes provided a refined pedal feel, contributing to the car's overall driving dynamics.

The 2022 MINI Cooper offered a choice between two engines: a turbocharged 1.5-liter three-cylinder with 134 horsepower and a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder in the Cooper S, producing 189 horsepower. The Cooper S accelerated to 60 mph in under seven seconds, providing a lively driving experience. Both engines were available with a six-speed manual or a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission. The MINI Convertible featured Green, Mid, and Sport driving modes, enhancing its sporty character. However, the steering response and brake feel were less precise, and the car's handling was not as sharp as expected. The JCW models offered even more power, but the overall driving experience was somewhat disconnected from the road.

Form and function

2021 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid

6/10

2022 MINI Cooper

4/10

The 2021 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid offered a spacious interior with 16 cubic feet of trunk space, one of the largest in its class. The cabin provided ample legroom for front passengers and decent rear-seat space, accommodating four adults comfortably. The sloping roofline slightly hindered rear door access, but once inside, headroom was adequate. The front passengers benefited from convenient storage options, including door pockets and a center console.

The 2022 MINI Cooper Convertible prioritized style over practicality, with comfortable front seats but nearly unusable rear seats. The trunk offered just 5.2 cubic feet of space, accessible through a bottom-hinged lid. Interior storage was limited, with the infotainment controls occupying valuable space. While the MINI's compact size was expected, those needing more room could opt for other MINI models like the Hardtop 4 Door or Countryman.

Technology

2021 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid

8/10

2022 MINI Cooper

7/10

The 2021 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid came standard with an 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system, while the Limited trim featured a 10.25-inch screen with navigation and real-time traffic updates. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto were standard, though CarPlay only occupied two-thirds of the larger screen. The system was intuitive, with crisp graphics and haptic buttons for various functions. The Limited trim also included a wireless charging pad and a head-up display, though the latter had limited adjustability for taller drivers.

The 2022 MINI Cooper introduced the MINI Connected infotainment system with a standard 8.8-inch touchscreen. The system featured LED lighting and customizable graphics, offering Apple CarPlay and Amazon Alexa integration. Navigation, wireless charging, and a Harman Kardon sound system were available. The infotainment system, based on BMW's iDrive, paired with a digital instrument cluster, performed well even in convertible form. A head-up display was also available, visible even with polarized sunglasses. The Harman Kardon system provided impressive sound quality, overcoming ambient noise with the top down.

Safety

2021 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid

9/10

2022 MINI Cooper

3/10

The 2021 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid came equipped with a comprehensive suite of driver-assistance features, including forward-collision avoidance, lane-departure warning, and adaptive cruise control. The Limited trim added a head-up display, 360-degree parking monitor, and parking sensors. The Sonata Hybrid earned top safety ratings from the IIHS and NHTSA, making it a reliable choice for safety-conscious drivers.

The 2022 MINI Cooper Convertible benefited from its increased size, offering better protection in collisions. However, it lacked crash-test ratings from the NHTSA and IIHS. The MINI Convertible included standard Driving Assistant technology, such as forward-collision warning and lane-departure warning. Adaptive cruise control was optional, but blind-spot monitoring was unavailable, posing a challenge with the top raised. The lane-departure warning system was effective, providing subtle feedback through the steering wheel.
