2020 Land Rover Range Rover Velar Reviews Summary

The original Land Rover Range Rover revolutionized the SUV game by combining off-road capability with a modicum of civility. Land Rover is now trying to milk that success by creating a “family” of Range Rover models, including some with more car-like styling and character.

That’s where the Land Rover Range Rover Velar comes in. Launched for the 2018 model year, it sits above the Range Rover Evoque, but below the Range Rover Sport, in size and price (the traditional Range Rover remains the brand’s flagship). Land Rover chose the Velar name as a nod to the original 1969 Range Rover prototypes, which were badged Velar to hide their origin.

The main change for the 2020 model year is the addition of an SVAutobiography Dynamic Edition to the lineup. It’s a one-year-only special that packs a V8 engine instead of the usual V6 or turbo-four. This is the version we tested as, aside from what’s under the hood, it is representative of other Velar models.

2021 Honda CR-V Hybrid Reviews Summary

Emotion drives your choice in a new car, truck, or SUV. You say you want reliability, safety, practicality, and efficiency. Then you buy the vehicle you think is the best looking, or comes in the right color combination, or gives you the biggest thrill, or makes a statement about your success. After all, you want your new set of wheels to look good on you, in addition to all that other boring stuff. The 2021 Honda CR-V Hybrid compact SUV is all about the boring stuff. And it doesn't look half bad, either.

Look and feel

2020 Land Rover Range Rover Velar

9/10

2021 Honda CR-V Hybrid

7/10

The 2020 Land Rover Range Rover Velar presented a balanced approach to styling within the Range Rover family, avoiding the extremes of its siblings. Its low roof and steeply-raked windshield gave it a unique profile, distinct from the traditional upright Range Rover. The Velar maintained an intimidating presence with its broad front end, while its short overhangs improved off-road capabilities. The SVAutobiography Dynamic Edition added sportier elements, such as larger air intakes and quad exhaust tips, enhancing its aggressive look. Inside, the Velar's high-quality leather and metal trim created a luxurious environment, with a cockpit-like feel that set it apart from typical SUVs.

In contrast, the 2021 Honda CR-V Hybrid retained the familiar look of its gas-only counterparts, with subtle distinctions like "Hybrid" badges and blue Honda logos. The LED fog lights and rear bumper design added a touch of sophistication. Inside, the CR-V Hybrid featured unique instrumentation to display battery status and power distribution, with steering wheel paddles managing regenerative braking. The interior offered comfort and practicality, with supportive front seats and remarkable rear seat space. Despite the lack of height adjustment for the front passenger seat, the CR-V Hybrid provided a comfortable and spacious environment for passengers.

Performance

2020 Land Rover Range Rover Velar

8/10

2021 Honda CR-V Hybrid

7/10

The 2020 Land Rover Range Rover Velar, particularly in its SVAutobiography Dynamic Edition, marked a shift towards performance with the introduction of a 5.0-liter supercharged V8 engine, producing 550 horsepower and 502 pound-feet of torque. This powertrain, paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission and standard four-wheel drive, allowed the Velar to accelerate from zero to 60 mph in 4.3 seconds, reaching a top speed of 177 mph. Despite its impressive speed, the Velar's performance was not class-leading, with competitors like the BMW X3 M Competition and Mercedes-AMG GLC 63 S offering quicker acceleration. The Velar's aluminum platform provided a solid and refined driving experience, though it felt less agile on tight roads.

The 2021 Honda CR-V Hybrid utilized Honda's two-motor hybrid technology, combining a 2.0-liter gasoline engine with an electric assist motor, delivering a total system output of 212 horsepower and 232 pound-feet of torque. The CR-V Hybrid offered three driving modes—EV Drive, Hybrid Drive, and Engine Drive—automatically selecting the most suitable one. It also featured three driver-selected modes: Econ, Sport, and EV. The CR-V Hybrid's added weight from the battery pack improved weight distribution and maintained 8.2 inches of ground clearance. While it provided a smooth and enjoyable driving experience, the CR-V Hybrid's fuel economy fell short of expectations, achieving 33.7 mpg compared to the EPA rating of 38 mpg.

Form and function

2020 Land Rover Range Rover Velar

6/10

2021 Honda CR-V Hybrid

9/10

The 2020 Land Rover Range Rover Velar occupied a unique position in terms of size, larger than compact luxury SUVs but smaller than midsize counterparts. Despite its size, the Velar's interior space was not as generous as expected, with competitors offering more legroom and headroom. Cargo space was competitive, with 15.7 cubic feet behind the rear seats and 48.9 cubic feet with them folded. The Velar's avant-garde styling contributed to a claustrophobic interior feel, with limited visibility. However, it offered a respectable towing capacity of up to 5,511 pounds in certain models.

The 2021 Honda CR-V Hybrid excelled in interior space and comfort. The front seats provided excellent support and adjustability, while the rear seats offered remarkable legroom and comfort, akin to the Honda Accord sedan. Interior storage was impressive, though the wireless smartphone charger occupied significant space on the center console. The CR-V Hybrid's cargo space was slightly reduced due to the battery pack, offering 33.2 cubic feet behind the rear seats and 68.7 cubic feet with them folded. Despite this, it remained practical for carrying people and cargo.

Technology

2020 Land Rover Range Rover Velar

8/10

2021 Honda CR-V Hybrid

3/10

The 2020 Land Rover Range Rover Velar featured the InControl Touch Pro Duo infotainment system, with dual 10.0-inch touchscreens handling various functions. While the system boasted high-quality graphics and a sleek design, it suffered from slow response times. Additional tech included a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, a head-up display, and capacitive steering-wheel controls, though they were prone to glare.

The 2021 Honda CR-V Hybrid's infotainment system, though not outdated in appearance, lagged in performance. The seven-inch touchscreen lacked a tuning knob, and the system was slow to start. Voice recognition was limited, making wired Apple CarPlay or Android Auto necessary for natural interaction. The Touring trim offered a nine-speaker premium audio system, but the overall infotainment experience was less sophisticated compared to competitors.

Safety

2020 Land Rover Range Rover Velar

6/10

2021 Honda CR-V Hybrid

8/10

The 2020 Land Rover Range Rover Velar lacked safety ratings from the IIHS and NHTSA, as low-volume luxury vehicles were not prioritized for crash testing. Standard safety features included automatic emergency braking, lane-keep assist, and parking aids, with adaptive cruise control and blind-spot monitoring available as options. However, the Velar's driver-assist tech was less advanced compared to competitors.

In contrast, the 2021 Honda CR-V Hybrid came equipped with Honda Sensing, a suite of advanced driving-assistance systems. Standard features included adaptive cruise control, forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, and blind-spot monitoring. The CR-V Hybrid earned a five-star overall rating from the NHTSA and a Top Safety Pick rating from the IIHS, ensuring a high level of safety for occupants.
