2020 Land Rover Range Rover Velar Reviews Summary

The original Land Rover Range Rover revolutionized the SUV game by combining off-road capability with a modicum of civility. Land Rover is now trying to milk that success by creating a “family” of Range Rover models, including some with more car-like styling and character.

That’s where the Land Rover Range Rover Velar comes in. Launched for the 2018 model year, it sits above the Range Rover Evoque, but below the Range Rover Sport, in size and price (the traditional Range Rover remains the brand’s flagship). Land Rover chose the Velar name as a nod to the original 1969 Range Rover prototypes, which were badged Velar to hide their origin.

The main change for the 2020 model year is the addition of an SVAutobiography Dynamic Edition to the lineup. It’s a one-year-only special that packs a V8 engine instead of the usual V6 or turbo-four. This is the version we tested as, aside from what’s under the hood, it is representative of other Velar models.

2021 Audi Q5 Reviews Summary

Audi has made a commitment to electrification across its lineup. That takes the form of all-electric (BEV), hybrid (HEV), and plug-in hybrid vehicles (PHEV). The Q5, which entered its second generation in the 2018 model year, has offered a PHEV powertrain since 2020 in the Audi Q5 55 TFSI e quattro.

Look and feel

2020 Land Rover Range Rover Velar

9/10

2021 Audi Q5

8/10

The 2020 Land Rover Range Rover Velar presented a balanced design, neither too compact like the Evoque nor as large as the traditional Range Rover. Its low roof and steeply-raked windshield gave it a unique profile, distinct from the upright stance of its siblings. The Velar maintained an intimidating presence with its broad front end, while its short overhangs improved off-road capabilities. The SVAutobiography Dynamic Edition added sportier elements, such as larger air intakes and quad exhaust tips, enhancing its aggressive look. Inside, the Velar offered a luxurious experience with high-quality leather and metal trim, creating a cockpit-like feel that was more suited to urban environments than rugged terrains.

In contrast, the 2021 Audi Q5 showcased a sharp, modern design that carried the Audi design language with distinction. Its expressive front, featuring LED headlights and a prominent Singleframe grille, emphasized width and sophistication. The Q5's body had crisp character lines, and its rear was marked by bold taillights. Inside, the Q5 maintained a classy and modern appearance, with a focus on technology and uncluttered design. The materials used were authentic and well-crafted, with a 10.1-inch touchscreen positioned for optimal driver visibility. The second row offered ample space, making the Q5 a comfortable choice for passengers.

Performance

2020 Land Rover Range Rover Velar

8/10

2021 Audi Q5

8/10

The 2020 Land Rover Range Rover Velar, particularly in its SVAutobiography Dynamic Edition, marked a shift towards performance with the introduction of a 5.0-liter supercharged V8 engine, producing 550 horsepower and 502 pound-feet of torque. This powertrain allowed the Velar to accelerate from zero to 60 mph in 4.3 seconds, reaching a top speed of 177 mph. Despite its impressive power, the Velar's performance was not class-leading, as competitors like the BMW X3 M Competition and Mercedes-AMG GLC 63 S offered quicker acceleration. The Velar's aluminum platform provided a solid and refined driving experience, though it felt large on tight roads. The base engine was a 2.0-liter turbocharged inline-four with 247 hp, while a 3.0-liter supercharged V6 was also available. The Velar retained its off-road capabilities with features like the Terrain Response system and All-Terrain Progress Control, though it lacked a low range for more challenging terrains.

The 2021 Audi Q5 PHEV enhanced its driving experience by combining a 2.0-liter turbocharged inline-four engine with an electric motor, delivering a total output of 362 hp and 373 lb-ft of torque. This setup allowed the Q5 PHEV to accelerate from zero to 60 mph in 5.0 seconds, with a fuel economy of 65 MPGe combined. The Q5 PHEV's battery could be recharged overnight or in 2.4 hours with a Level 2 charger. It featured a seven-speed S Tronic automatic transmission and full-time Quattro all-wheel drive, offering various driving modes for efficiency and performance. The Q5's handling was balanced, with minimal body roll and powerful braking, making it a fun and efficient crossover to drive.

Form and function

2020 Land Rover Range Rover Velar

6/10

2021 Audi Q5

8/10

The 2020 Land Rover Range Rover Velar occupied a unique position in terms of size, being larger than compact luxury SUVs but smaller than midsize counterparts. Despite its size, the Velar did not offer more interior space, with competitors like the Mercedes-Benz GLC providing more legroom. Cargo space was competitive, with 15.7 cubic feet behind the rear seats and 48.9 cubic feet with them folded. The Velar's design, while stylish, limited headroom and visibility, creating a somewhat claustrophobic interior. The towing capacity was respectable, with the V6 and SVAutobiography Dynamic Edition models capable of towing up to 5,511 pounds.

The 2021 Audi Q5 PHEV benefited from smart packaging, with its battery pack located under the luggage compartment floor, preserving cargo space. It offered 25.1 cubic feet of space behind the second row and 53.1 cubic feet with the seats folded. The second row provided ample legroom and headroom, accommodating two adults comfortably. The front seats were supportive and adjustable, enhancing comfort for the driver and front passenger. The Q5's interior was thoughtfully designed, with convenient storage options and a focus on functionality.

Technology

2021 Audi Q5

9/10

The 2020 Land Rover Range Rover Velar featured the InControl Touch Pro Duo infotainment system, with dual 10.0-inch touchscreens handling various functions. While the system offered high-quality graphics and a built-in WiFi hotspot, its slow response times were a drawback. The Velar also included a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and a head-up display, though the capacitive steering-wheel controls were prone to glare.

The 2021 Audi Q5 PHEV boasted Audi's latest MMI 10.1-inch touchscreen infotainment system, complemented by the Audi Virtual Cockpit Plus 12.3-inch HD instrument cluster. This setup provided a customizable and futuristic cabin experience. The Q5 offered features like the Integrated Toll Module and a Bang & Olufsen 3D audio system, enhancing convenience and entertainment. Wireless Apple CarPlay was included, adding to the Q5's tech-savvy appeal.

Safety

2020 Land Rover Range Rover Velar

6/10

2021 Audi Q5

7/10

The 2020 Land Rover Range Rover Velar lacked safety ratings from the IIHS and NHTSA, as low-volume luxury vehicles were not prioritized for crash testing. Standard safety features included automatic emergency braking and lane-keep assist, with adaptive cruise control and blind-spot monitoring available as options. However, the Velar's driver-assist tech was less sophisticated compared to competitors.

The 2021 Audi Q5 PHEV had not been rated by the IIHS, but the 2020 gasoline model received top ratings in most categories. The NHTSA awarded the 2021 Q5 gasoline model five stars. The Q5 PHEV offered a comprehensive suite of safety features, including six airbags, Audi Pre Sense, and electronic stability control. Available driver-assistance features included adaptive cruise control and a top-view camera system, enhancing safety and convenience.
