2019 Jeep Cherokee Reviews Summary

The Jeep Cherokee, in its various forms, is not like the rest of the compact crossover set. While most rivals offer rugged, capable vehicles, the Cherokee delivers more. Its 4-wheel-drive and terrain-management systems are proven, and the Cherokee’s Trailhawk trim is the only small SUV that can actually hang off-road with the likes of the iconic Jeep Wrangler.

This capability puts it at a unique crossroads—it provides Jeep shoppers with a pretty capable SUV, but one that's more affordable than the Grand Cherokee. The Trailhawk also offers Wrangler buyers a potential alternative with better on-road manners.

Add to this that the Cherokee has been redesigned for 2019. Are the looks enough to make compact SUV buyers flock to it? And is the Trailhawk capable enough to make a Jeep shopper consider a Cherokee over the Wrangler?

2020 Mazda CX-5 Reviews Summary

According to a Harvard Business Review marketing study, there is such a thing as too much choice. And when the marketplace presents consumers with too much choice, there is a chance they won’t buy anything at all.

For the 2020 model year, there are more than 40 small or compact SUVs available, half of them sold by luxury brands. Small and scrappy Mazda offers three of them: the CX-3, the CX-30, and the CX-5. However, in a marketplace awash in Chevys, Fords, Hondas, and Toyotas, Mazda has trouble standing apart from the established crowd.

What’s the solution? Move upscale into “premium” territory.

Premium is where Buick, Fiat, GMC, Jeep, Mini, and Volkswagen play to varying levels of success. Combining the value inherent in a mainstream brand with the design, materials, and technology common to luxury brands, these premium vehicles attempt to provide more than mainstream for less than luxury.

At the same time, less is more. Because the 2020 Mazda CX-5 has but four similarly sized competitors in the premium class, that makes it easier for a consumer to choose, and more likely that a consumer will buy. The trick is convincing people that Mazda is a premium brand, and the automaker is taking a pragmatic approach to this emotionally-charged solution.

Look and feel

2019 Jeep Cherokee

9/10

2020 Mazda CX-5

9/10

The 2019 Jeep Cherokee underwent a significant design overhaul to address the polarizing styling of its predecessor. Originally rumored to be a Fiat design, the Cherokee's previous generation had a unique look that didn't resonate with everyone. The 2019 model introduced a more conventional front-end design, replacing the isolated daytime running lights and fog-light-like headlights with a traditional configuration. The rear of the vehicle also saw changes, with the license plate moved to a more standard position on the rear hatch, giving it a more modern appearance. Inside, the Cherokee retained its well-received dash and cabin layout, reminiscent of a downsized Grand Cherokee, offering a blend of form and function with ample storage solutions.

In contrast, the 2020 Mazda CX-5 exuded a premium feel, with Mazda's commitment to captivating style and substance evident in its design. The CX-5's Kodo styling themes continued to impress, offering an appealing and upscale look. Inside, the CX-5's cabin was a testament to Mazda's attention to detail, especially in the Signature trim, which featured premium Nappa leather upholstery and real wood accents. However, the Caturra Brown leather in the Signature trim was almost indistinguishable from the otherwise black cabin, reducing the contrast that often enhances a premium feel. Despite this, the CX-5's interior was stylish and well-appointed, making it a strong contender in the compact SUV segment.

Performance

2019 Jeep Cherokee

8/10

2020 Mazda CX-5

7/10

The 2019 Jeep Cherokee offered a range of engines, starting with a base 2.4-liter 4-cylinder engine producing 180 horsepower and 171 pound-feet of torque. This engine was standard on the Latitude, Latitude Plus, and FWD Limited trims. The 4WD Limited, Overland, and Trailhawk trims came with a 3.2-liter V6 engine, delivering 271 horsepower and 239 pound-feet of torque. A new addition for 2019 was the turbocharged 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine, generating 270 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque, available across the lineup except for the base Latitude. The Cherokee featured a 9-speed automatic transmission and several 4WD systems, including Active Drive I, Active Drive II, and Active Drive Lock, enhancing its off-road capabilities. The Cherokee's towing capacity was impressive, with the V6 engine capable of towing up to 4,500 pounds and the turbocharged engine up to 4,000 pounds. Fuel economy varied, with the most efficient variant achieving 23 mpg city, 31 highway, and 26 combined.

The 2020 Mazda CX-5 came standard with a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine producing 187 horsepower and 186 pound-feet of torque, paired with a six-speed automatic transmission. FWD was standard, with AWD optional. The Grand Touring Reserve and Signature trims featured a turbocharged version of the engine, delivering 250 horsepower and 320 pound-feet of torque on premium fuel, or 227 horsepower and 310 pound-feet on regular fuel. The turbocharged engine was less efficient, with a combined rating of 24 mpg, compared to 26 mpg for the naturally aspirated engine with AWD. The CX-5's G-Vectoring Control Plus technology enhanced its driving dynamics, but excessive body motions detracted from the overall driving experience. Despite this, the CX-5 offered engaging steering and reliable brakes, making it enjoyable to drive in typical conditions.

Form and function

2019 Jeep Cherokee

6/10

2020 Mazda CX-5

7/10

The 2019 Jeep Cherokee's interior was designed for functionality, with a control layout that allowed for easy access without taking eyes off the road. Storage solutions were plentiful, with deep pockets in the front doors, a tray by the shifter, and a deep center console. The Cherokee offered a hands-free power liftgate, though its sensor was sometimes unreliable. Cargo space was limited, with 25 cubic feet behind the rear seats and 54 cubic feet with the seats folded, falling short of competitors like the Honda CR-V.

The 2020 Mazda CX-5 aimed to compete with luxury SUVs, offering a more upscale cabin with a generous list of standard equipment. The interior featured classy gauges and metallic accents, with higher trims adding dual-zone climate control, heated seats, and Nappa leather. Despite its stylish interior, the CX-5 was less spacious than rivals, with rear legroom and cargo space being limited. Cargo capacity was 30.9 cubic feet behind the rear seats and 59.6 cubic feet with the seats folded, with a power liftgate standard on higher trims.

Technology

The 2019 Jeep Cherokee featured a 7-inch Uconnect touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto as standard on the Latitude and Latitude Plus trims, while higher trims received an 8.3-inch system. The Uconnect system was praised for its user-friendly interface, with customizable screens and responsive graphics. While lacking some advanced features like wireless charging, Uconnect was considered a benchmark for infotainment systems.

The 2020 Mazda CX-5's Mazda Connect infotainment system offered an upscale impression but required acclimation. The Sport trim had a 7-inch touchscreen, while higher trims featured an 8-inch screen with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and a Bose sound system. The system could be controlled via touchscreen, center console, or voice commands, though none were ideal. The voice-recognition technology was particularly frustrating, often failing to respond. Mazda planned to update the system in 2021, addressing some operational issues.

The 2019 Jeep Cherokee came standard with front and side-impact airbags, a reversing camera, electronic stability control, and more. Optional safety features included blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-path detection, and forward-collision avoidance. The Technology Group package added advanced features like lane-departure warning and adaptive cruise control.

The 2020 Mazda CX-5 excelled in safety, with standard i-Activsense ADAS, including adaptive cruise control, forward collision warning, and lane-keep assist. It also featured LED headlights and rain-sensing wipers. The CX-5 earned top safety ratings from the IIHS and NHTSA, with high marks in individual testing parameters, making it a safe choice for consumers.
