2019 Honda Passport Reviews Summary

With four SUVs currently in its lineup, it may be hard to imagine, but there was a time when Honda had no idea how to build one. In 1993, Isuzu did the hard work, offering its body-on-frame Rodeo, which Honda rebadged as the Passport until 2002. Today's modern Passport is a Honda Pilot without a third-row seat, and like the Pilot (and the Ridgeline pickup), it's based on the Odyssey minivan chassis. And despite being tailored to families and outdoorsy types, the Passport is one of the most simplistic, unadorned new SUVs on sale. Offering basic transportation with gobs of space, all-wheel drive, and high ground clearance, the Passport hasn’t altered its original formula—and that's a good thing.

2020 Jeep Renegade Reviews Summary

Based on a Fiat platform and built in Italy, the Jeep Renegade is American in name only. Equipped with traditional Jeep styling cues and, depending on the version, Trail Rated off-road capability, this cartoonish subcompact SUV is more than just an appliance on wheels. That alone makes it more appealing than many of its direct competitors, but if you want all of the extras, get ready to pay a premium for them.

Look and feel
2019 Honda Passport
7/10
2020 Jeep Renegade
8/10
CarGurus experts rate the 2019 Honda Passport as 7 out of 10 and the 2020 Jeep Renegade as 8 out of 10. The Passport's design is reminiscent of a bygone era when SUVs didn't hide their truck roots. It features a boxier and more broad-shouldered look than the Pilot, with a rugged blacked-out grille, restyled front bumper, and black 20-inch wheels. Inside, the Passport offers a spacious and practical cabin with above-average fit and finish. The Renegade boasts the signature Jeep design elements, including round headlights, the iconic 7-slot grille, and trapezoidal wheel arches. The High Altitude trim exudes a more grown-up look with trendy dark gray 19-inch wheels and a dual-pane panoramic glass roof. However, the interior materials feel inexpensive and lack practical storage spots.
Performance
2019 Honda Passport
8/10
2020 Jeep Renegade
6/10
CarGurus experts rate the 2019 Honda Passport 8 out of 10 and the 2020 Jeep Renegade 6 out of 10. The Passport, equipped with a potent 3.5-liter V6 engine producing 280 horsepower and 262 lb-ft of torque, delivers strong performance. Its 9-speed automatic transmission, while responsive, exhibits some delay during manual downshifting. The Passport offers capable handling and a towing capacity of up to 5,000 pounds. The Renegade offers a choice between a 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine and a turbocharged 1.3-liter four-cylinder. The turbocharged engine provides better performance, but there's noticeable turbo lag and an unrefined nine-speed automatic transmission. The Renegade's driving dynamics are less impressive, with a flinty ride and sloppy steering.
Form and function
2019 Honda Passport
9/10
2020 Jeep Renegade
7/10
CarGurus experts rate the 2019 Honda Passport 9 out of 10 and the 2020 Jeep Renegade 7 out of 10. The Passport impresses with its spacious interior, offering 41.2 cubic feet of storage behind the rear seats and 77.9 cubic feet with them folded. The tall windows and high seating position create an airy feel, and the cabin is well-equipped with practical features and controls. The Renegade's interior feels larger than its competitors, despite its boxy exterior. However, rear-seat space is cramped, and there are limited practical storage spots. The Renegade's cargo volume is also modest, measuring 18.5 cubic feet behind the back seat.
Technology
2019 Honda Passport
7/10
2020 Jeep Renegade
9/10
CarGurus experts rate the 2019 Honda Passport 7 out of 10 and the 2020 Jeep Renegade 9 out of 10. The Passport offers an 8-inch high-res touchscreen with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and 4G WiFi. The Garmin navigation system is user-friendly and accurate. However, advanced connected services and certain safety features are only available on higher trims. The Renegade features the Uconnect infotainment system with an 8.4-inch touchscreen, offering Bluetooth, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Amazon Alexa integration, and a Wi-Fi hotspot. It also offers a comprehensive driver information center and a new Kenwood premium audio system.
Safety

7/10
2020 Jeep Renegade
7/10
CarGurus experts rate the 2019 Honda Passport 7 out of 10 and the 2020 Jeep Renegade 7 out of 10. The Passport comes standard with Honda Sensing driver assists and offers blind-spot monitoring on higher trims. While it has not been fully rated by safety organizations, it has performed well in various crash tests, though it lacks certain advanced safety features. The Renegade offers a range of advanced safety features, including adaptive cruise control, forward collision warning, and blind-spot monitoring. It has received commendable scores in most safety tests, but rear-seat occupants are protected at a mediocre level in side-impact testing.
Cost Effectiveness
2019 Honda Passport
7/10
2020 Jeep Renegade
5/10
CarGurus experts rate the 2019 Honda Passport 7 out of 10 and the 2020 Jeep Renegade 5 out of 10. The Passport's pricing when new ranged from $31,990 for the base FWD Sport to $43,680 for the AWD Elite. While the top trim may seem expensive, the EX-L trim offers a good balance of value and amenities, making it a compelling choice. The Renegade may not be the most cost-effective option, especially in the top trim. However, Jeep often offers substantial rebates and discounts, making it more appealing for those seeking the unique traits and off-roading capability it offers.
