The 2022 Ford Bronco Sport is a more capable and utilitarian alternative to the more mall-crawling offerings in the small SUV segment. The Bronco Sport was introduced for the 2021 model year and carries over into 2022 with minimal changes. It is the smaller sibling to the large Ford Bronco and takes on some of the larger vehicle’s styling in the form of the squared-off front-end. The tall, boxy layout provides up to 65.2 cubic feet of cargo space. With the rear seats in use, the Bronco Sport offers 32.5 cubic feet of cargo space. That space can be accessed via the rear hatch with integrated handles, or via the pop-up rear window.
Trims for the Bronco Sport are Base, Big Bend, Outer Banks, and Badlands.
The base trim includes integrated roof rails, multiple USB ports, Bluetooth connectivity, a Wi-Fi hotspot, and an 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
Moving up to the Big Bend adds satellite radio, push-button start, automatic climate control, and a helpful cargo strap tie-down system. There’s an available Convenience Package on the Big Bend, which adds push-button start, wireless device charging, heated front seats, a power-adjustable driver’s side seat, and a number of additional high-tech safety features.
The Outer Banks trim comes with power-adjustable front seats, heated front seats, partial-leather upholstery, a heated steering wheel, remote start, dual-zone climate control, rear parking sensors, and push-button start. This trim can be had with an available Tech Package, which adds wireless device charging, HD radio, and a 10-speaker B&O premium sound system by Bang & Olufsen.
The range-topping Badlands trim includes the more powerful engine as standard equipment, as well as tow-hooks, skid plates, a beefed-up suspension, and a more capable four-wheel-drive system for tackling trails. It also includes a forward-facing camera that provides a view of the trail ahead.
The base engine in the Bronco Sport is a 1.5-liter turbocharged three-cylinder engine which makes 181 horsepower and 190 pound-feet of torque. Buyers can also select a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine that puts out 250 horsepower and 277 pound-feet of torque. Both engines route power through an eight-speed automatic transmission to four-wheel drive. The Bronco Sport is able to tackle various driving conditions with the G.O.A.T. (Goes Over Any Terrain) modes. Using a dial in the center console, the driver can select Sand, Slippery, Sport, Eco, and Normal drive modes. The Bronco Sport Badlands trim builds on this with Ford Trail Control, which is like cruise control for the trail.
The three-cylinder Bronco Sport returns fuel economy of 25 mpg city, 28 highway, and 26 combined. The four-cylinder Bronco Sport returns 21 mpg city, 26 highway, and 23 combined.
The Bronco Sport comes equipped with driver assistance features such as automatic emergency braking, forward-collision warning, pedestrian detection, lane-departure warning, blind-spot monitoring, and rear cross-traffic assist. Optional safety tech includes traffic-sign recognition, adaptive cruise control, rear parking sensors, and lane-centering assist.
Base MSRP for the 2022 Ford Bronco Sport is $27,265. The Big Bend trim starts at $28,825, and the Outer Banks starts at $33,075. The range-topping Badlands starts at $33,935. The Bronco Sport is backed by a five-year/60,000-mile powertrain warranty.
