In 2004, the Toyota Tundra made strides towards becoming a true full-size truck with the addition of a crew-cab body style. Still smaller than its American competitors (F-150, SIlverado, Ram), the standard Tundra is more of a full mid-size than mid full-size.
Reviewers of this truck have praised its smooth ride and the power of the optional 4.7-liter V8, while others have panned the base 3.4-liter V6, wondering what place a V6 has in a truck of this size.

I currently own a 2006 Tundra, which is basically the same truck....and I absolutely love it. Very sturdy and holds the value very good. Take care of it and it will last a long time.Nov 01, 2021

I purchased a first generation Tundra ( 2006 Dbl Cab ) that I found using CarGurus in March 2020. The vehicles size and features are good balance that more roomy than a current model Tacoma but not as bulky as the Gen 2 Tundras.
Note of Caution: The first generation Tundra is a great vehicle as long as you can find one with a solid frame. The rust issues associated with the frame cross members on some of these early Tundras should be considered when researching.May 07, 2020

Love it. Purchased about 6 months ago used with 70k on it. Hoping to test the Toyota reliability and drive it for years to come! Prior owner took really good care of it. Enjoy it so far. Long bed and crew cab do make the car very long, and you'll notice backing up or into small parking spaces.Jun 23, 2014

This overall is great. The towing helps when i haul atvs and dirt bikes. The truck dings up pretty easily, so be careful. Other than that its an amazing truck that can get you from point A to B and have fun at the same time.Jan 15, 2014

Bought mine in 06 with 17k miles on it and it now has over 150k. Not ever had one problem with this truck, power is good, gas mileage good for a truck and it is the perfect sized truck for someone who wants the tweaner sized pickup. The 4.7 is bulletproof and just a great small block with good torque and horsepower. If you want a smaller truck and bed space isnt a huge concern, get the step side, it is a great looking truck. I cannot rave enough about the reliability of this vehicle. Just a solid vehicle. The motor and transmission feel just as strong as ever and the ride is very smooth. It hasnt been babied either, spending much of the time on dirt roads or on the ranch pulling small trailers. The only draw back is the small back seat, once you are an adult, the backseat is irrelevant. It basically becomes a catchall. All in all this truck has been everything and more, paying for itself over and over again.Jul 28, 2013

It is so reliable, easy to maintain, good looking, practical and fun, push of a button 4WD has been a life saver on more than one occasion (or at least so I don't have to get out of the truck) in the snow, slush, mud, cold, ice, etc. Would definitely recommend one to anyone. This truck has never let me down. Plenty of power, handles well. 160k miles and i have done nothing but maintenance. Fits 2 car seats when needed. Has towed anything i need, and is really fun to drive. Great truck.Aug 17, 2012

This truck has been solidly reliable. It has excellent jump when gas is applied. Handles well except in small turns and parking takes some getting used to. It has a comfortable ride and all controls are within easy reach. It truly is the best car I have ever owned.Jul 11, 2011

4 wheel drive, garage kept, nice running truck. 69.000 miles, gently
used. Rear slide down window. Rain and mud guards. Tool box. A/C,
cruise, keyless lock, Surround sound, DVD player, electric drivers seat
control, locks and windows. Bought it from originall owner through
Toyota dealer. Newer tires, maintained along with oil change every 3
months. Some minor scrapes and very small dents. Dark grey, interior
brown, back windows tinted.
Runs smooth and quiet with good acceleration. Brakes work great with
wet roads and quick, sudden stops.
Looks very good, no engine problems. OK with gas mileage for a V-8.
Very easy to drive and leather seats are comfortable. Has full back seats
with DVD player and headphones. Radio controls on steering wheel and

I love the horsepower of my truck, it's great for towing, great for cruising on the highway, and with the offroad TRD package (skid plate and nerf bars) I have no fear of taking it to the back woods of Maine or Vermont. It's capable in the snow, and handles like a much larger truck. I've only replaced tires and gave it an oil change or two since I bought it. It gets twenty two miles to the gallon on the highway when driven at the posted speed limit. My only complaint is that I need a bigger back seat to take along more friends, but the access cab is big enough for the kids in back for now.Mar 09, 2009

This is the best car I have ever owned. It is built very solid. There isn't a rattle, squeak, whine, etc, and that is after 70,000 miles. It still drives like new.
In 2004, this was the the only 1/2 ton full size truck that could seat a family of 5 (with 3 car seats) and still had a full 6+ foot bed.
My only gripe is gas mileage. The Tundra in general gets good gas mileage compared to comparable full sized trucks. Mine, however, is worse because of the aftermarket parts.

When we hook our trailer up and put the truck in reverse we blow the gauge fuse. It only does it when we have the trailer hooked up.
We have a 2004 tundra extended cab 4x4. It only blows the fuse when the trailer is hooked up. It didn't do it to our friends GMC.

Tundra electrical issues
Evening folks, have a real strange issue here, was putting a new exhaust system, manifolds back. My battery was dead when I finished and threw the charger on for a day. Next day I see that the head lights are on, no parking lights(stalk switch is turned off), dash trouble indicators, VSC, seat belt indicator, air bag indicator and such are all on, WITHOUT A KEY IN THE IGNITION OR TURNED ON! Truck starts, runs and turns off normally.... Also with the key off and out of the ignition, the power windows will work if pressed... Have gone through my service manual and schematics but don't see anything that sticks out as the issue. Disconnect the ignition switch and nothing changes. This is really breaking my butt off! Have checked the archives and don't see the same issue mentioned. Anyone else have this issue!!!!! TIA!

Ball joints
Hello, while I was driving the front left tire buckled under my truck. I had it towed home, where I was able to see that the knuckle had detached from the upper ball joint. I'm assuming I need to replace that ball joint, but do I need to do something with the part of the knuckle where the ball joint come and knuckle come together? I've never worked on my truck alone, but the person I helped work on my truck with passed away and I'm trying to do this on my own. I really can't afford to pay someone else to do it, so I could really use some help or a little guidance if it wouldn't be too much trouble. Thank you in advance, the Sara
