More power, more features, and an updated front end usher in the third year for the Nissan Xterra, a compact SUV built on a truck frame and offering true off-roading capability. The 2002 Xterra gets a powerful supercharged version of its 3.3-liter V6 engine, that boosts the 170-hp to 210-hp and helps with the 3500-pound towing capacity. The 143-hp, 2.4-liter I4 is still offered with the base model XE, while either V6 can be had on the XE or SE trim, mated to a 5-speed manual or 4-speed automatic.
To accommodate the supercharger, the 2002 Xterra gets a hood bulge. New rounded headlights and standard foglights are part of the front end restyling. Inside, there are updated gauges and 2 extra power outlets, for a total of four. The parking brake has been moved to the floor, and variable intermittent wipers and a rear wiper are standard across the line. The XE now has the option of a 6-CD player, and the SE's standard sunroof is now an option. The base XE comes only with rear-wheel drive, but both the 2WD and part-time 4WD are offered with the V6 engine. The 4WD has low range gearing for better off-road performance, and a new Enthusiast Package adds a limited slip differential, rubber mats, a front towing package, and a first aid kit to the XE. Adjustable roof rails are standard on the SE, with a built-in storage basket.
Dual front airbags and ABS brakes are standard on all the models. Seats fold flat, but the bottom cushions must be removed and are awkward to take out. Even with the seats up, the 2002 Xterra has 44 cubic feet of cargo space. The combination of rugged performance, storage versatility, and youthful styling have propelled Xterra sales far beyond that of the more staid and luxurious Pathfinder. Drivers love its looks, 4WD behavior in bad weather and rocky roads, and appreciate the elevated rear seats that offer extra visibility for passengers. Owners report the seats can be uncomfortable and both front and rear legroom is cramped. What makes the Xterra so capable off-road also makes it bumpy for day-to-day city driving, and drivers report wind noise.

It handles really good, it's very dependable. It is easy to get into and out of, and for a tight suspension, it rides smoothly. The controls are easy to reach and operate, and it is a really nice little suv all around.Feb 28, 2015

I have owned 2 nissan xterras and have been very pleased with both of them. straight from the factory it's a very capable and reliable vehicle. I do not recommend buying a naturally aspirated xterra however as they are extremely underpowered. but the supercharged 3.3L V6 has more than enough power. gas mileage is kind of mediocre, think its about 14 town and 18 highway. so in that aspect i maintain they could stand to improve a little bit. but if you don't have a lead foot, they don't do too bad fuel economy wise. they have plenty of ground clearance, space for hauling cargo, full size spare tire that's easily accessable without taking up interior space,and a first aid kit. the independent suspension makes for a very smooth ride and great handling. my xterra has Warn manual lockouts and slightly oversize tires, can't even tell there's a difference. the disc brakes up front offer plenty of stopping power too, forgot to mention that earlier. the xterra will take everything you can throw at it in stride. these trucks make for fun trail trucks or everyday drivers.and for anyone that enjoys modifying their rig, www.purenissan.com has lots of cool aftermarket parts ranging from suspension upgrades/solid axle conversion kits to roof racks and bumpers. in conclusion, I can honestly say that i have been very satisfied and impressed with my xterra, only thing i would change is a slightly more spacious back seat and lockers in the front and rear differentials. but all in all, i would definitely recommend these trucks to anyone looking to purchase a solid, affordable, low maintenance, reliable 4x4. My 2002 Nissan Xterra SE 4X4 SUV is great for off roads. It has a good balance between power and gas mileage and is mostly reliable. It's a great blue-collar SUV for outdoorsmen like me especially when I go snowboarding and kayaking. It shows some wear and tear though but it's more because of my poor maintenance and old age. But overall, I still love it just like the day i bought it in 2002.Oct 10, 2012

Needs a little more power and better MPG's. The appearance is very nice and is
great to customize with whatever you want I put an Autobot decal on the rear
bubble and on the roof rack and it looks great.

I like the space this car offer along with the reliability and gas milage. The car is not big enough for a large family though. Never has maintenence issues. Normal upkeep and this car was flawless. Great vehicle especially the outdoors type. Nov 14, 2011

Fun to drive but it still rides like a truck. Not very easy to do a tune up on, but is
reliable and fun to drive. Plastic front end is fading but thats S. Florida sun for you.
The only thing that i don't like is the headliner is falling down. Otherwise it was a

It is a great SUV, loaded with all the extras that come in the SE package. Has the 3.3L SOHC Supercharged V6 (VG33ER), performace is great on the vehicle. Great for offroading and 4x4 trips. Draw back is that it is not good on gas.... AT ALL!Dec 21, 2010

the vehicle is good it was reliable,fun to drive, bad on the gas but that can be over-looked, it was comfortable, tons of room for just about anything, I never used it to tow, it had rapid acceleration, I was a Vol. Fire Fighter and it always got me to the station.Jul 26, 2010

Like the ride, the build quality, the 4wd is nice. It is big enough for the smaller family. Both my wife and I are bigger people so we require more seating area, this vehicle lets us have the car seat and not have the passenger seat in the dash. Perfomance is so-so. It is only a 3.3 pushing a big heavy vehicle so its not going to set any records. Fuel economy is not the greatest...have been averaging 18mpg. Sep 19, 2008

It awesome, i love it. I used to have a jeep, its alittle hard to compare because its not a four wheel drive. it rides, and handles magnificent. its pretty god on gas. and gets me to where i need to go. Thought it was fuel related this time so I switched the fuel pump and fuel sending unit and fuel filter. Still no start, even with starter fluid. Any ideas?

Nissan Xterra No power unless key on
My 2002 Xterra was just fiunctioning properly hours ago, (Key fob working, power locks, lights, etc.) and then when parked to go inside, went to lock with fob and no response. With key out of ignition i am getting symptoms of a dead battery. No power to anything listed above. Only when key is in the ON position is it working or wehn vehicle is running (Everything works as it should). Any ideas?
