After a power-enhancing 2001 model year, the 2002 Toyota 4Runner remained unchanged.
The base engine remained a 3.4-liter V6 rated at 183 horsepower and 217 lb/ft of torque. The styling is appropriately unisex, making the car popular with both men and women. The interior is spacious and car-like, with available leather trim and a well-laid out instrument panel.
Highway passing in the 4Runner is much easier than it used to be; no reviewers seem to miss the I4. The ride is primarily smooth, though can get a little shaky as the SUV ages.

Overpriced, unsafe, rust bucket. Poor description by dealership lead to a long drive to see the vehicle in person. We love this generation of 4Runners, but this car is in bad shape for the price they are asking! Dec 24, 2024

416k (!!!) miles and still towing the boat, trailer with trips to HDepot. This car is amazing!!! Wish they made them this well nowadays.
Best ever car in the snow!
From mile one - we have maintained this car through the dealership and we 100% faithful to 3K MILES OIL CHANGES.
We have a 2021 Landcruiser and our 2002 is made far better (although- more bells and whistles) . The new cars are made of PLASTIC body parts (!!!) and SOY BASED WIRING HARNESS. Like I said, wish they made the new ones like the 02 Forerunner.

I really enjoy driving this vehicle. It drives great, on and off road. I can take it to work or hunting and know that it will get the job done. Overall this is a great, very safe vehicle to drive. Dec 10, 2014

Good acceleration, very roomy, good handling and comfortable for long trips. Fuel economy is the weak point for this SUV. Excellent reliability, low maintenance cost, repairs and spare parts are very affordable. A great buy for. 2002 Toyota 4Runner SR5.Jan 14, 2014

I would buy another one in a heart beat. Its a great suv. Never left me stranded, has over 150k on it and never has even had a check engine light. awsome!!! Can't really be happier than that when you buy a used car.Sep 25, 2013

Like the handling of my truck. Spacious. Easy to park.
Dislike the mileage. But its a truck!!
Never has left me high and dry. Time to move on though.
Will definately recommend if you want a lifelong partner.
With the truck chasis it does not veer off the road during bad climate.Jun 19, 2012

I love my truck!! It takes off well, it is sturdy. I like being able to flip into 4 whl when i get stuck in traffic - which i have done!!
I also love the look! My favotie aspect is the fact that the back window goes down and lets the air flow thru.May 13, 2009

Excellent vehicle for getting around in the snow with BFG
AT's. A little underpowered for my taste. Has been very
reliable and cheap to maintain. Styling has held up well,
interior is solid and clean, but has developed some squeaks
and rattles. Upgraded suspension with Bilsteins and blocks
in the rear to level the ride, which helped restore handling.
Gets good gas mileage, brakes are acceptable for an SUV
but certainly not spectacular. Have added NAV/DVD,
backup camera, bluetooth hands-free, and ipod dock.
Factory speakers have held up surprisingly well. Overall
an excellent value, solid, dependable and capable.Jan 20, 2009

The 4Runner replaces as a tow vehicle a 5.9 Durango AWD with limited slip differentials, tow package, and the lower 3.92 gearing, so it had some pretty big shoes to fill.
The 4Runner is way more reliable and able to pull long and hard without destroying the automatic transmission, but at the end of the day, it's limited by its 3.4 liter V6.Jan 11, 2009

I have owned 2 Toyota's and absolutely love them.
Have only had to change brakes, tires and maybe a belt.
Excellent for hiking, camping, back road stuff.
quiet, runs smooth, can sleep in back, fits tons of groceries from Costco, great for baby seats, not comfortable for long car trips though..

The clutch is really smooth. I have no problems with
the performance. The only issue is gas milage: it gets
around 20 mpg, but with the pod on the top it
probably gets 18-19. I really like the look, especially
compared to all the newer models of the 4runner.Aug 16, 2008

Great car, other than fuel economy theres little to complain about on this
car. It has plenty of pep, and for a SUV that is 6 years old looks pretty
sharp, compared to the newer models out there. Jul 01, 2008

tires are wearing unevenly on rear only. specifically the OUTER edge of the drivers rear. replaced a rear passenger broken shock. did not replace the drivers rear shock. other than the shock, is there something else that could wear out causing un even tire wear?
I'm looking to buy a cheap car and I've always heard toyotas were realiable. One I'm looking at has 250,200 miles for $4000, is it worth it? Car fax seems good but then again i could miss something. It's coming from a big chain dealership(brand new cars are sold). So i trust them more. Here is the listing heck out this car I found on Cars.com: https://www.cars.com/vehicledetail/detail/8396914 99/overview?aff=share_other And carfax https://www.carfax.com/VehicleHistory/p/Report.cf x?vin=jt3gn86r320249047&partner=cdm_o
My 2002 Toyota 4Runner trembles every time I accelerate. It has progressively gotten worse... What could be the problem? I'm guessing it's either the catalytic converter or the U joint. Any thoughts??
i have a Toyota 4 runner and i need a new transmission but its really hard finding one for the car since its a limited and its a 4x4. would a 2000 transmission fit into my 2002 4 runner?
suddenly, my 02 4 runner's dash light indicators are staying on and there is a high pitched buzzer going off constantly. manual says see toyota dealer. what is the likely problem?
