1999 Subaru Legacy Reviews, Pricing & Specs

With the birth of my first child early this year I realized that my 2-door Civic SI just wasn't gonna cut it anymore. I found the Subaru by accident--paid $3k for a Legacy L Wagon with 155k on the clock. I am the second owner--the first was a mechanic with a successful shop in town and a pilot--the car was kept in an aircraft hangar its whole life and was driven when the owner flew in. So it has NO rust. The mechanic replaced the trans 12k miles ago and the t-belt/pulleys/water pump at 105k. It's my first Subaru and I am DARN impressed. TONS of little touches that make driving it fun. With this vehicle I can honestly say that I will own nothing but Subarus for LIFE...it's that good. If you find one at a really good price do NOT hesitate--have a mechanic look at it and BUY IT. That being said, once the summer is truly over (the Subie has great A/C) I will be using my Honda to get to work and back...the fuel economy of the Honda is FAR better. I'll let my wife have the Subie to cart my son around.

25 mpg and 165 hp stock, braking is instant and the frame is pretty tough. Only real problem is the USDM engine doesn't come with a turbo.

living in scotland with the scottish weather the way it is and the very poor road conditons, my subaru (big baby) i feel is the safest and most practical car to own.the poor mpg goes out the window when the winter hits and i can still get to work everyday,when outhers that rely on public transport have to take time of. overall car looks and drives great.

Great allrounder and great for torque in traffic. performace, build quality, appearance is ace, cost is minimal, fun is the icing on the cake. If over 10 years old - 2.5 left hand head gasket always need to be replaced. Only thing wrong.

Nice ride! solid on the road, takes corners easy. Take off powerful, but be careful she has bite! Excellent on long journeys, an easy ride. Tears up and down hills no problem, no fear of stalling. All in all a brilliant 'lil car for me!

Basically stock besides engine swap. Stock exterior and interior. Performance is pretty amazing. 266 awhp and 260 lb/tq. before turbo and fuel upgrade. Suspension is similar to that of a Cadillac, she floats. This will change in the near future.

Great car, love it in the winter, perfect for Utah and Moscow. Goes good on the freeway, lots of passing power with good mpg. Cheap to maintain, never breaks down. Fun to drive, gets me where I need to go.

Its lowered and 4wd so it handles well. Done 220k so performance has dropped off a bit. Well build and very comfortable to drive. Great stereo but uses a bit too much fuel now. Overall I love Subies and this is a decent one. Will go back to the turbo version next time

The outback is great. The 2.5 L engine is relatively easy to repair despite the boxer orientation of the cylinders. It handles very well with the All Wheel Drive and manual transmission.

The AWD is nice, but less fun than my Cherokee to drive. Having four doors is nice, and the wagon does add a lot of space for tools and camping gear. The 2.5 HO engine is nice, but not the peppiest thing I've owned. Overall I feel the buttons could be positioned better, especially the cruise control.
