Is the Mercedes-Benz S-Class a good car?
Yes — the Mercedes-Benz S-Class is a strong choice if you want a flagship luxury sedan with broad appeal and consistently high owner satisfaction. The all-generations owner rating is 4.7/5 across every model year in the data.
Owners repeatedly praise the S-Class for its luxurious feel, comfortable and spacious interiors, smooth ride, powerful engines, and advanced technology. Expert reviews reinforce that same character, highlighting the model’s premium materials, refined driving experience, and strong performance.
Expert reviews rate the 2022 and 2023 models among the highest across all years.
The main tradeoffs are high ownership costs, technology that can be frustrating to use, and limited cargo space on some versions. Still, if you want a used luxury sedan that delivers comfort, prestige, and a deeply polished cabin, the S-Class remains compelling.
32.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
Are Mercedes-Benz S-Class models reliable?
Owners consistently describe the S-Class as luxurious, comfortable, and impressively refined, and expert coverage repeatedly points to strong craftsmanship and a smooth, composed driving experience. Across the model years in the data, that combination of comfort and advanced engineering is a major part of the car’s appeal.
- Owners rate the Mercedes-Benz S-Class between 3.92 and 5.0 out of 5 stars across all model years in the data.
For used buyers, long-term ownership risk is tied to the S-Class’s complexity, so a well-documented service history matters a lot when you’re shopping.
What should I look for when buying a used Mercedes-Benz S-Class?

Older model years carry meaningfully higher accident rates, so always verify the vehicle history report on pre-2021 models.
Key things to evaluate:
- Safety package: Standard advanced safety features include forward collision warning with automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, lane-keep assist, automated lane-change assist, evasive steering assistance, automatic reverse braking, a semi-automated parking system, and a surround-view camera system.
- Infotainment: All 2025 Mercedes-Benz S-Class models have a 12.3-inch digital instrument panel, a 12.8-inch infotainment touchscreen, a native navigation system with augmented reality video overlays, voice recognition, and a Burmester surround-sound system.
- Fuel efficiency: The S 580e is the efficiency leader of the lineup, with 48 miles of electric range and 23 mpg in combined driving once the battery is depleted.
Which Mercedes-Benz S-Class trim should I buy?
The 2025 Mercedes-Benz S-Class offers these trims:
- S 500: The entry point, with a turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six, 442 horsepower, and standard 4Matic all-wheel drive; it’s the best-value trim for shoppers who want the core S-Class experience.
- S 580: Adds a twin-turbo 4.0-liter V8 with 496 hp and 516 lb-ft, plus the same nine-speed automatic and standard AWD.
- S 580e: Brings plug-in hybrid power with 503 hp, 553 lb-ft, and an estimated 48 miles of electric range.
- AMG S 63 E Performance: The performance flagship, combining a twin-turbo 4.0-liter V8 with an electric motor for 791 hp and 1,055 lb-ft, plus an estimated 16 miles of electric-only propulsion.
What Mercedes-Benz S-Class do most buyers choose?
The Mercedes-Benz S-Class years with the most listings are 2023, 2022, and 2024.
| Model Year | Total Listings | Good + Great Deals % |
|---|---|---|
| 2023 | 1,239 | 36.2% |

What is the Mercedes-Benz S-Class's resale value?
| Model Year | Current Avg. Price | Year-Over-Year Change |

| 2021 | $58,446 | −9.96% |
| 2014 | $20,985 | −9.21% |
| 2015 | $24,733 | −8.11% |
| 2018 | $34,274 | −7.4% |
| 2024 | $118,033 | −4.09% |
| 2017 | $38,789 | −3.23% |
Most model years are down year over year, which is good news if you’re shopping used because prices have generally softened. The biggest drops are concentrated in several recent and mid-cycle years, while a few years have declined less sharply and therefore retained more of their value. Overall, the table points to broad downward movement rather than stability.
The 2017, 2024, and 2018 model years have held their value best, with the smallest year-over-year price changes.
Is the Mercedes-Benz S-Class safe?
- 2025: 7/10

Well taken care of..ride is so silky smooth , great space...will add for this size car trunk is rather small..used the space for rear seating..roomy vehicle..Love it !

This model is particularly a great S-Class version. It is so much better than the successor model S. The features are pretty much the same but having the tactile models and not a giant Ipad in the middle made the car so much more user friendly. I hope the next version reverts back to tactile buttons and not all of these haptics that just do not work. It is a card with an excellent ride and the sound system is top notch. I have never really had a smooth quieter ride than the S Class Mercedes.

CarGurus recommends the 2023 Mercedes-Benz S-Class

Favorably reviewed: CarGurus experts gave it an 8.5 / 10.

Why it stands out
The 2023 Mercedes-Benz S-Class stands out as a luxury full-size sedan that pairs the brand’s familiar emphasis on design and refinement with a new powertrain for 2023. It is described as being a few years into its latest generation, and Mercedes introduced a plug-in hybrid setup for this model year. That combination gives it a distinctive role for buyers who want a high-end sedan with the ability to travel far on electrons without fully committing to a battery-electric vehicle.
Its appeal is rooted in impressive technology, premium interior materials, and impressive electric range, all of which reinforce the S-Class’s upscale character. At the same time, it is not much more efficient than the non-hybrid powertrain, and it is very expensive. It also does not qualify for the federal tax rebate, which may matter to shoppers weighing the plug-in hybrid’s benefits against its cost.
