The Chevy Equinox is a value prospect in the popular compact crossover segment, facing off against popular rivals such as the Kia Sportage, the Honda CR-V, and the Toyota RAV4. ## What’s New for the 2024 Chevrolet Equinox The Chevrolet Equinox was last fully redesigned in 2018, but it has received some substantial refreshes since then. Its last update was for 2023, so for 2024, it carries over unchanged. The Equinox is one of the more affordable options in the compact crossover segment, though it lags behind the competition in terms of performance, styling, and cabin quality, not to mention the fact that most competitors have been more recently redesigned. ## Design The Equinox’s design, inside and out, is rather mundane relative to the competition, but that works in its favor. If you’re not looking for something brash, high-tech, or overly rugged, this Chevy might suit you just fine. The exterior is a scaled-down version of larger Chevy crossovers, most notably the Traverse, and its simplicity can be refreshing. ## Powertrain The 2024 Equinox features the same powertrain across the lineup, a 1.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine rated for 175 horsepower and 203 pound-feet of torque. The hp rating is modest, but the torque helps compensate to make daily driving livable, particularly for city speeds. An outdated six-speed automatic transmission is also a culprit of the mediocre driving dynamics. All trims come standard with front-wheel drive (FWD) and are available with all-wheel drive (AWD) for a modest upcharge. ## Interior The Equinox’s cabin offers lots of function but little flash. It’s spacious and reasonably comfortable, with lots of room in both rows and plenty of storage, though plastic trim covers most surfaces. The cargo hold offers 29.9 cubic feet under the lift gate, which is more than key competitors like the Subaru Forester. However, most rivals offer more maximum cargo space than the Equinox’s maximum of 63.9 cubic feet with the rear row of seats folded down. ## Technology The Equinox comes standard with a 7-inch touchscreen until you get to the top-end Premier trim, which gets upgraded to an 8-inch touchscreen. These screens are smaller than you’ll find in most rivals, but Chevy’s interface is intuitive and user-friendly, with quick response and a good voice-recognition system, and some solid controls to replicate the most used functions. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard across the lineup, and the Premier trim gets wireless device charging. ## Safety Chevy equips every 2024 Equinox with a reversing camera, automatic emergency braking, pedestrian detection and automatic braking, lane-keeping assistance, lane-departure assistance, and automatic high beams. Crash-test results are mixed. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) awarded a five-star overall rating to the 2024 Equinox, but the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) testing of the 2023 model yielded a Poor rating in the moderate overlap front crash evaluation and a Marginal rating in the side-impact evaluation. ## Pricing The 2024 Chevrolet Equinox is available now. As of this writing, Chevrolet lists pricing as $27,995 MSRP for the base LS, $30,890 for the LT, $32,495 for the RS, and $33,195 for the Premier, all with FWD. All four trims are available with AWD for about $1,500, though the additional cost varies slightly by trim.
