CarGurus Analysis: 2023 Toyota Sequoia
overall

Summary
With 41 currently listed for sale near Los Angeles, CA and an average price of $62,831, 34.1% of 2023 Toyota Sequoias for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2023 Toyota Sequoia 3.75 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 6.67 / 10.

Why it stands out
The 2023 Toyota Sequoia stands out as a redesigned full-size SUV that brings a more advanced cabin and a standard hybrid powertrain. It is about the same size on the outside as the outgoing model, but it gives up interior volume to make room underneath the cabin for that hybrid setup. That tradeoff helps define the Sequoia’s character: it is modern and technologically current, but it does not deliver the expansive interior expected from a traditional full-size SUV.
For buyers, the Sequoia’s strengths are straightforward. It has a powerful engine, easy-to-use technology, and standard advanced safety features. Those qualities make it appealing as a family hauler with a strong feature set. The main drawbacks are just as clear, though. The ride quality is poor, the third row is cramped and best reserved for kids, and cargo space is limited enough that it is on par with midsize crossovers rather than full-size rivals.

I compared the Capstone Sequoia to the GMC Yukon Denali. I think I could be happy with either one, but I will choose the Toyota because I like that the chassis comes from the Tundra truck so it is a proven and stiff frame. I also like the power outlets for 120 Vac & 12 Vdc.

The 2023 Toyota Sequioa is an SUV worth owning. Its huge, its luxurious and strong. However, I have two issues with the SUV... 1. The SUV is highly unaffordable. The price is more than $100,000 for some of the models and even the said cheaper ones are nowhere within reach at the dealerships. 2. Also, prior to its production, the 2023 Sequioa was advertised as having CAPTAIN chairs for the most part. I was disappointed to know that the ones with CAPTAIN chairs cost way more than the ones without it.

Got a chance to ride in a limited yesterday. I have owned Sequoias since 2007, we buy them for the room, quietness and solidness. The 2023 Limited that I drove was surprisingly a little bit sloppy on the ride. It has the punch of a turbo which was fun. The high end interior felt a little cheap, 3rd row space has evaporated and you now have to decide to take people or luggage, no longer both. Beautiful vehicle which it was better.

I drive a 2016 Sequoia,. I love the way it works for our large family! When I saw the new looks I was excited! I finally got to test drive one last week and was really disappointed. It no longer has the spacious interior that works for a large family. I’d say anyone. Over 5”6 in height will start to be too big for the back seats. My kids hated it in the back and begged me not to buy it. I wish they could have updated the look - and kept the functionality that families have loved for decades. The positives are that It handles well, is better on gas, is really great to look at and has great features. But the new ones no longer have space in the back for taller kids and all your stuff.

| Year-Round Low | $61,651 |
| Year-Round High | $66,318 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $66,316 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −7.00% |

There are 839 listings available, which gives you a solid pool to compare prices and equipment.
Is the 2023 Toyota Sequoia a good car?
The 2023 Toyota Sequoia is a strong fit if you want a modern full-size SUV with a hybrid powertrain and a useful feature set, though its packaging tradeoffs matter. It earns 3.75/5 from users and 6.67/10 from our experts.
The standout strength is Safety at 10/10.
It also brings easy-to-use technology and a powerful powertrain, but the cabin sacrifices interior volume to make room for the hybrid hardware. The biggest trade-offs are the poor ride quality, cramped third row, and limited cargo space, so it makes the most sense if you value towing, efficiency, and standard safety more than maximum room.
With 34.8% of listings marked as good or great deals, you have some room to shop selectively.
Is the 2023 Toyota Sequoia reliable?
The 2023 Toyota Sequoia’s redesign and standard hybrid setup give it a more modern foundation than the outgoing model, and the expert review describes it as improved in nearly every way except interior packaging. The hybrid powertrain is presented as robust, with strong output and better fuel economy than before.
The performance notes also point to a powertrain that feels quick and capable, with improved straight-line hustle and stout towing ability. On the cost side, the first scheduled maintenance visit is on the house, which helps early ownership costs a bit.
For used buyers, the main long-term risk is that the same packaging compromises that define the Sequoia now can make it less satisfying over time if you need space more than capability.
What should I look for when buying a used 2023 Toyota Sequoia?
Accident-free inventory is excellent at 91.4% — clean inventory, standard diligence applies.
You should still run a vehicle history report and prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if you’re considering a higher-mileage example or one that may have been used for towing. Focus on overall condition, because the Sequoia’s value proposition depends heavily on whether the truck-like hardware and premium equipment have been maintained well.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The lineup ranges from the SR5 to the Capstone, with the Capstone adding the most upscale cabin treatment, a 14-inch infotainment screen, and a more luxurious presentation. The base SR5 is much simpler, so you should compare equipment carefully if you want the best value.
- Powertrain: Every version uses a twin-turbocharged 3.5-liter V6 hybrid setup with a 10-speed automatic, and it delivers 437 horsepower and 583 pound-feet of torque. It also returns 20 mpg with 4WD and 22 mpg with RWD.
- Safety package: Toyota Safety Sense 2.5 is standard and includes forward-collision warning, pedestrian detection, automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assist, lane-centering assist, adaptive cruise control, automatic high-beam headlights, and road sign recognition. Blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, Safety Connect, and front and rear parking sensors with automatic braking are also standard.
- Infotainment: The base SR5 gets an 8-inch touchscreen, while other versions use a 14-inch screen. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are included, and the system supports connected services and an available voice assistant.
- Fuel efficiency: The hybrid powertrain is EPA-rated at 20 mpg with 4WD and 22 mpg with RWD, and the review notes 17.8 mpg in a 4WD test vehicle.
Which 2023 Toyota Sequoia trim should I buy?
The 2023 Toyota Sequoia is offered in 5 trim levels: SR5, Limited, Platinum, TRD Pro, and Capstone.
Here's the short version:
- SR5: This is the entry point, but it still gives you the standard hybrid powertrain, Toyota Safety Sense 2.5, and the core Sequoia experience. It makes sense if you want the lowest-cost way into the model and can live with the smaller 8-inch touchscreen.
- Limited: This is the trim to target if you want a better balance of equipment and value, since it builds on the SR5 without jumping all the way to luxury pricing. It should suit you best if you want a more complete daily driver without chasing the top-end trims.
- Platinum: This trim adds more premium content and is the point where the Sequoia starts feeling more upscale, including the larger infotainment setup and a digital rearview mirror. It’s a good fit if you want comfort and tech to matter more than price.
- TRD Pro: Choose this if you want the most off-road-focused version in the lineup, since the review specifically calls out its added capability. It’s the right pick if rough-road use matters more than on-road comfort.
- Capstone: This is the luxury-leaning choice, with leather, wood, metallic finishes, a 14-inch infotainment screen, and the most upscale cabin presentation. Buy this only if you want the most premium Sequoia and are comfortable paying for it.
Toyota Safety Sense 2.5 is standard across the lineup.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2023 Toyota Sequoia?
This is a moderate market for selective buyers, so you can shop carefully without feeling rushed.
- Deal availability: 34.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 839 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 7.00% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 91.4% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $61,651, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2023 Toyota Sequoia's resale value?
The current average of $61,672 sits slightly below last year's $66,316.
That decline suggests the market has moved in your favor if you’re buying now, but it also means a future seller may need to price competitively to stand out. The current range still shows healthy demand, though, so a well-kept Sequoia with desirable equipment should remain relatively easy to position. If you buy at the right price and keep mileage and condition in check, you should have a reasonable path to resale later.
Is the 2023 Toyota Sequoia safe?
The 2023 Toyota Sequoia does not have published crash-test results cited here, so the strongest safety evidence comes from its standard equipment and expert score.
It earns a 10/10 safety score from our experts.
Toyota Safety Sense 2.5 is standard and includes forward-collision warning, pedestrian detection, automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assist, lane-centering assist, adaptive cruise control, automatic high-beam headlights, and road sign recognition. You also get blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, Safety Connect emergency assistance and automatic collision notification, plus front and rear parking sensors with automatic braking.
That makes the Sequoia a strong safety choice if you want a full-size SUV with a broad standard driver-assistance suite. The lane-departure warning can be irritating, but the overall system is well integrated and useful in daily driving.
Should I buy a 2023 Toyota Sequoia or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2023 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2023 if:
- 34.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Accident-free inventory is excellent at 91.4% — clean inventory, standard diligence applies.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 7.00% compared with last year.
- It delivers the redesigned hybrid setup with strong power and standard advanced safety.
Consider the 2022 if:
- It offers a more traditional, space-focused full-size SUV layout.
Consider the 2024 if:
- At $66,795, the 2024 costs more than the current year's $61,672 average.
- It adds the latest tech updates and a well-received facelift.
The bottom line: The 2023 is the better primary choice if you want the redesigned hybrid Sequoia and can live with its tighter packaging. If you’re especially price-sensitive, the 2022 may appeal more for its traditional space-first approach, while the 2024 is worth considering only if you want the newer updates and are willing to pay more.
