CarGurus Analysis: 2023 Toyota Sequoia
overall

Summary
With 827 currently listed for sale and an average price of $61,707, 31.6% of 2023 Toyota Sequoias for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2023 Toyota Sequoia 3.75 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 6.67 / 10.
92.4% of 2023 Sequoia models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2023 Toyota Sequoia stands out as a redesigned full-size SUV that brings a more advanced cabin and a standard hybrid powertrain. It is about the same size on the outside as the outgoing model, but it gives up interior volume to make room underneath the cabin for that hybrid setup. That tradeoff helps define the Sequoia’s character: it is modern and technologically current, but it does not deliver the expansive interior expected from a traditional full-size SUV.
For buyers, the Sequoia’s strengths are straightforward. It has a powerful engine, easy-to-use technology, and standard advanced safety features. Those qualities make it appealing as a family hauler with a strong feature set. The main drawbacks are just as clear, though. The ride quality is poor, the third row is cramped and best reserved for kids, and cargo space is limited enough that it is on par with midsize crossovers rather than full-size rivals.

I compared the Capstone Sequoia to the GMC Yukon Denali. I think I could be happy with either one, but I will choose the Toyota because I like that the chassis comes from the Tundra truck so it is a proven and stiff frame. I also like the power outlets for 120 Vac & 12 Vdc.

The 2023 Toyota Sequioa is an SUV worth owning. Its huge, its luxurious and strong. However, I have two issues with the SUV... 1. The SUV is highly unaffordable. The price is more than $100,000 for some of the models and even the said cheaper ones are nowhere within reach at the dealerships. 2. Also, prior to its production, the 2023 Sequioa was advertised as having CAPTAIN chairs for the most part. I was disappointed to know that the ones with CAPTAIN chairs cost way more than the ones without it.

Got a chance to ride in a limited yesterday. I have owned Sequoias since 2007, we buy them for the room, quietness and solidness. The 2023 Limited that I drove was surprisingly a little bit sloppy on the ride. It has the punch of a turbo which was fun. The high end interior felt a little cheap, 3rd row space has evaporated and you now have to decide to take people or luggage, no longer both. Beautiful vehicle which it was better.

I drive a 2016 Sequoia,. I love the way it works for our large family! When I saw the new looks I was excited! I finally got to test drive one last week and was really disappointed. It no longer has the spacious interior that works for a large family. I’d say anyone. Over 5”6 in height will start to be too big for the back seats. My kids hated it in the back and begged me not to buy it. I wish they could have updated the look - and kept the functionality that families have loved for decades. The positives are that It handles well, is better on gas, is really great to look at and has great features. But the new ones no longer have space in the back for taller kids and all your stuff.

How much does the 2023 Toyota Sequoia cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $61,689 |
| Year-Round Low | $61,687 |
| Year-Round High | $66,459 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $66,448 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −7.16% |
Prices have softened 7.16% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
There are 842 listings available, which gives you a meaningful amount of inventory to compare.
Is the 2023 Toyota Sequoia a good car?
With a user rating of 3.75/5 and an expert rating of 6.67/10, the 2023 Toyota Sequoia lands in the solid-but-not-class-leading zone.
The standout strength is Safety at 10/10.
It brings a redesigned cabin, a standard hybrid powertrain, easy-to-use technology, and strong towing capability, so it fits you best if you want a modern full-size SUV with a robust feature set. The trade-offs are just as clear: the ride quality is poor, the third row is cramped, and cargo space is limited enough to feel more midsize-crossover than full-size-SUV. That makes it appealing if your priorities are power, tech, and safety, but less convincing if you need maximum family-hauling space.
Accident history: 32.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals, which suggests you have room to shop carefully and compare condition against price.
Is the 2023 Toyota Sequoia reliable?
The 2023 Toyota Sequoia’s redesign gives you a more modern package, and its standard hybrid setup is built around a twin-turbo V6, electric motor/generator, and battery pack that deliver strong output and improved efficiency.
The powertrain is described as robust, with better towing and payload capability than the previous model, and the hybrid system helps the SUV return better fuel economy than the outgoing V8 version. The cost-effectiveness notes also point out that the hybrid powertrain promises impressive fuel economy, even if real-world testing came up short of expectations.
For long-term ownership, the main risk is that you’re buying a complex, heavy full-size SUV with limited interior space relative to its size, so condition and maintenance history matter a lot.
What should I look for when buying a used 2023 Toyota Sequoia?
Accident-free inventory is excellent at 91.8% — clean inventory, standard diligence applies.
You should still run a history report and prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if you’re considering a higher-mileage example or one that’s been used for towing. Focus on overall condition, because the Sequoia’s value depends heavily on whether the cabin, suspension, and drivetrain have been treated well.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The lineup ranges from the more basic SR5 to the upscale Capstone, with the Capstone adding leather, wood, metallic finishes, and a 14-inch infotainment display. The base SR5 is notably less lavish, so you should compare equipment carefully if you want a more premium feel.
- Powertrain: Every version uses a twin-turbocharged 3.5-liter V6 hybrid setup with a 10-speed automatic, a 36-kilowatt electric motor/generator, and a 1.87-kilowatt-hour nickel-metal hydride battery pack. It delivers strong power and better fuel economy than the previous generation.
- Safety package: Toyota Safety Sense 2.5 is standard and includes forward-collision warning, pedestrian detection, automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assist, lane-centering assist, adaptive cruise control, automatic high-beam headlights, and road sign recognition. Blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, Safety Connect, and front and rear parking sensors with automatic braking are also standard.
- Infotainment: The base SR5 gets an 8-inch touchscreen, while other versions get a 14-inch touchscreen. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are included, and the system supports connected services and a voice assistant.
- Fuel efficiency: The Sequoia is EPA-rated at 20 mpg with 4WD and 22 mpg with RWD.
Which 2023 Toyota Sequoia trim should I buy?
The 2023 Toyota Sequoia is offered in 5 trim levels: SR5, Limited, Platinum, TRD Pro, Capstone.
Here's the short version:
- SR5: This is the entry point, but it still gives you the standard hybrid powertrain, Toyota Safety Sense 2.5, and the core Sequoia experience. It makes sense if you want the lowest starting point and can live with the smaller 8-inch touchscreen.
- Limited: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it builds on the SR5 with more equipment while staying below the luxury-focused upper trims. It’s the smart middle ground if you want more comfort without chasing the highest price.
- Platinum: This trim adds more premium content and is the point where the digital rearview mirror becomes standard. It suits you if you want a more upscale daily driver without going all the way to Capstone.
- TRD Pro: This is the one to choose if you want the most off-road-oriented setup in the lineup. It’s the trim to target if rough-road capability matters more than luxury touches.
- Capstone: This is the most luxurious version, with leather, wood, metallic finishes, a 14-inch infotainment screen, and a cream white-over-black interior theme. It’s the right pick if you want the most premium Sequoia experience.
Toyota Safety Sense 2.5 is standard across the lineup.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2023 Toyota Sequoia?
The market looks selective rather than overheated, so you can shop with patience but should move quickly on the right example.
- Deal availability: 32.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 842 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 7.16% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 91.8% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $61,687, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2023 Toyota Sequoia's resale value?
The current average of $61,689 sits slightly below last year's $66,448.
That decline suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can help you as a buyer today. If you own one, it also means your resale position may be softer than it was a year ago, especially if your vehicle lacks desirable equipment or has higher mileage.
For a future seller, the key is to preserve condition and documentation so your Sequoia stands out against the large pool of listings. Well-kept examples should hold up better than average, but the broader price trend still points to a more competitive resale environment.
Is the 2023 Toyota Sequoia safe?
The 2023 Toyota Sequoia earns a 10/10 safety score from our experts.
Every driver-assistance feature available for the 2023 Toyota Sequoia is standard equipment, and Toyota bundles the core suite into Toyota Safety Sense 2.5. That includes forward-collision warning, pedestrian detection, automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assist, lane-centering assist, adaptive cruise control, automatic high-beam headlights, and road sign recognition.
It also adds blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, Safety Connect emergency assistance, automatic collision notification, and front and rear parking sensors with automatic braking. The lane-departure warning can be irritating, but the overall system is well integrated and useful in daily driving.
Should I buy a 2023 Toyota Sequoia or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2023 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2023 if:
- 32.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Accident-free inventory is excellent at 91.8% — clean inventory, standard diligence applies.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 7.16% compared with last year.
- It’s the redesigned year with a standard hybrid powertrain and a more advanced cabin.
Consider the 2022 if:
- It offers a traditional body-on-frame layout with more cargo space and a more familiar SUV feel.
Consider the 2024 if:
- At $66,758, the 2024 costs more than the current year's $61,689 average.
- It adds the latest tech updates and a well-received facelift.
The bottom line: If you want the newer hybrid-era Sequoia with strong safety and modern tech, the 2023 is the better primary choice. If your priority is maximum space and a more traditional full-size SUV layout, a different year may fit you better, and price-sensitive buyers should focus on the best-equipped clean example rather than chasing the newest badge.
