CarGurus Analysis: 2023 Toyota Prius
overall

Summary
With 802 currently listed for sale and an average price of $28,204.00, 34.4% of 2023 Toyota Priuses for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2023 Toyota Prius 4.33 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 7.5 / 10.
85.7% of 2023 Prius models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2023 Toyota Prius stands out first for its styling. After decades of being the frumpy leader of the fuel-efficiency movement, it arrives as one of the better-looking new cars to hit the market recently, and that fresh design gives it a much more appealing presence than the Prius name has traditionally suggested. It also brings a huge jump in power without giving up the fuel-sipping character that made the model famous, which helps it feel more modern and more capable than older Prius models.
That broader appeal is reinforced by impressive standard safety features and a reasonable suite of interior tech and comfort goodies, so the car is not just about efficiency. At the same time, it is not without tradeoffs: the price has risen significantly, the engine can drone loudly when pushed hard, and interior space and cargo room have decreased. Even so, the 2023 Toyota Prius remains distinctive because it combines strong fuel economy with a far sleeker look and a more powerful driving experience than the Prius has been known for in the past.

I got my XLE for 1000 under retail price. Right place right time I guess and so far I only have a few miles on it. So not to much to say other than it has remote start that is not listed on the window sticker and all the controls are easy to do. My biggest pet peeve is the antenna does not pick up my stations that my other Prius did in my driveway but they do come in down the road. Love the detail on the body lines that doesn’t look like the old ones. So far fuel mileage is way off on the estimate left for cruising range. Happy with Prius and will continue to buy them. Had the last one for almost 10 years so fingers crossed.

The information on the dash display might take some time to become familiar with. On my test drive I had trouble finding information that I wanted, partly because the graphics seem small compared to in my older Prius.

How much does the 2023 Toyota Prius cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $28,316 |
| Year-Round Low | $26,093.25 |
| Year-Round High | $28,556.44 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $28,233 |
| Change vs. Last Year | +0.29% |
Prices have held steady compared to this time last year, signaling a stable and predictable market for this model year.
There are 837 listings available, which gives you a decent amount of inventory to compare before you buy.
If you find a listing below $26,093.25, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
Is the 2023 Toyota Prius a good car?
Generally — 4.33/5 from users and 7.5/10 from experts. The 2023 Toyota Prius stands out because it moves the nameplate beyond pure efficiency: you get sleeker styling, a much stronger powertrain, and a more modern-feeling cabin than older Prius models. The expert score also reflects strong marks for look and feel and safety, which helps this hybrid feel more complete than just a fuel-saver.
The trade-offs are real, though. The engine can drone loudly when you push it hard, and the cabin gives up some interior space and cargo room compared with the previous generation. Even so, the Prius still fits well if you want a hybrid that feels more contemporary and more capable in everyday driving.
With 33.2% of listings marked as good or great deals, you have some room to shop selectively.
Is the 2023 Toyota Prius reliable?
Owners rate it 4.33/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction.
The 2023 Prius is presented as a more mature, better-rounded hybrid than earlier versions, with a stronger powertrain and a solid-feeling platform that should help it feel durable over time. Its everyday driving manners are calm and composed, and the hybrid system is described as responsive and easy to live with.
Toyota also includes a broad set of standard safety and driver-assistance features across the lineup, which can reduce stress in daily use and support long-term ownership confidence. For used buyers, the main risk is less about basic dependability and more about making sure the specific car you choose has been maintained well and hasn’t been abused or neglected.
What should I look for when buying a used 2023 Toyota Prius?
Accident-free inventory is solid at 86% — always verify the vehicle history report.
You should still check the history report carefully, because a clean listing percentage does not guarantee a clean individual car. Prioritize a pre-purchase inspection if you’re considering a higher-mileage example or one with incomplete service records. Focus on overall condition, especially signs of hard use, since the cabin space and cargo room are already tighter than before and you’ll want to make sure the car has been cared for.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The LE is the value play because it already includes the core safety gear, an 8-inch touchscreen, and wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The XLE adds 19-inch wheels, faux leather seats, a power driver’s seat, wireless charging, parking sensors, and a smart key, while the Limited layers on the larger screen, glass roof, JBL audio, ventilated front seats, a heated steering wheel, and a power tailgate.
- Powertrain: You get a new 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine paired with a more powerful electric motor and lithium-ion battery. FWD models make 194 total horsepower, while AWD models make 196 total horsepower, and the car uses a continuously variable automatic transmission.
- Safety package: Toyota Safety Sense 3.0 is standard on all trims and includes radar-based adaptive cruise control, pre-collision braking with pedestrian and cyclist detection, lane-departure alerts with steering assist, lane-tracing assist, and Proactive Driving Assist. Blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alerts is also included, and Advanced Park is available on the Limited.
- Infotainment: The LE and XLE come with an 8-inch color touchscreen, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and a 7-inch digital instrument cluster. The XLE can be optioned with a 12.3-inch touchscreen, and that larger screen is standard on the Limited.
- Fuel efficiency: The Prius keeps its fuel-sipping character even with the added power, though no MPG figure is stated here.
Which 2023 Toyota Prius trim should I buy?
The 2023 Toyota Prius is offered in 3 trim levels: LE, XLE, Limited.
Here's the short version:
- LE: This is the best-value trim because it already gives you the essential Prius experience: the standard safety suite, an 8-inch touchscreen with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and the core hybrid setup. If you want the lowest entry price and don’t need luxury extras, this is the trim to start with.
- XLE: This is the trim to buy if you want the best balance of features and price. It adds 19-inch wheels, faux leather seats, a power driver’s seat, wireless charging, parking sensors, and a smart key, making it feel meaningfully more upscale without jumping all the way to the top trim.
- Limited: Choose this if you want the most comfort and convenience equipment. It adds the larger screen, glass roof, JBL sound system, ventilated front seats, heated steering wheel, power tailgate, and Digital Key, so it suits you best if you want the most fully equipped Prius.
Toyota Safety Sense 3.0 is standard on every trim, so you do not need to move up the lineup to get the core driver-assistance package.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2023 Toyota Prius?
This is a moderate, selective-buyer market, so you can shop carefully without expecting a deep bargain on every listing.
- Deal availability: 33.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 837 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have held steady compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 86.0% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $26,093.25, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2023 Toyota Prius's resale value?
The current average of $28,316 sits slightly above last year's $28,233.
That small increase suggests the market has stayed steady rather than swinging sharply in either direction. For you, that usually means the Prius is holding its value in a predictable way, which is helpful if you plan to sell or trade it in later. A stable price trend also makes it easier to judge whether a used listing is fairly priced today.
Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.33/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2023 Toyota Prius safe?
It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.
Toyota Safety Sense 3.0 is standard on all 2023 Prius models, and it includes radar-based adaptive cruise control, pre-collision braking with pedestrian and cyclist detection, lane-departure alerts with steering assist, lane-tracing assist, and Proactive Driving Assist. The car also includes stability control, traction control, eight airbags, and blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alerts.
That broad standard equipment list is a strength, especially because you do not need to move up to a higher trim to get the core driver-assistance package. The only notable caveat is that crash-test results are not cited here, so you should focus on the standard safety hardware and the trim-specific availability of Advanced Park on the Limited if that feature matters to you.
Should I buy a 2023 Toyota Prius or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2023 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2023 if:
- 33.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Accident-free inventory is solid at 86% — always verify the vehicle history report.
- Price trend: Prices have held steady compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.33/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
- It brings a major styling overhaul and a much stronger powertrain than the previous generation.
Consider the 2024 if:
- At $29,670, the 2024 costs more than the current year's $28,316 average.
- It adds broader everyday appeal with more practicality and available AWD.
The bottom line: If you want the better-looking, more powerful Prius and you’re comfortable with the current market price, the 2023 is the smarter buy. If your priority is stretching for the newest version and you’re willing to pay more, the 2024 is the better path. For price-sensitive buyers, the 2023 offers the stronger value case right now.
