What’s New for the 2026 Toyota Prius
The Toyota Prius rolls into the 2026 model year without any major changes. The Nightshade Edition that hit the market in 2025 remains on sale, with blacked-out elements inside and out and unique 19-inch wheels. Interestingly, the Prius Nightshade is offered in white and in an exclusive shade of yellow in addition to the usual black.
Design
Those who aren’t familiar with the current Prius, introduced in 2023, may remember Toyota’s previous dowdy or funky little hybrids. That’s no longer the case. Now in its 25th year on the U.S. market, the 2026 Toyota Prius has a sleek look, with a steeply raked windshield, sharp headlights, and a swept-back profile that looks both sporty and aerodynamic.
Powertrain
Prius models with front-wheel drive (FWD) feature a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine and electric motor that collectively produce 194 horsepower. With optional all-wheel drive (AWD), an additional electric motor powering the rear wheels increases total output to 196 hp. Toyota estimates that the FWD Prius will return up to 57 mpg in the city, 56 mpg on the highway, and 57 mpg combined. In XLE, Nightshade, and Limited trims, the FWD Prius drops to 52 mpg across the board due to larger 19-inch wheels instead of the base car’s 17-inch units. With AWD, the 2026 Prius is rated at 53 mpg city, 54 mpg highway, and 54 mpg combined, or 49 mpg city, 50 mpg highway, and 49 mpg combined in XLE, Nightshade, or Limited trims. All Prius models feature three selectable drive modes: Normal, an Eco mode that limits power to boost efficiency, and a Sport mode that quickens the throttle response.
Interior
The fourth-generation Prius adopted a more traditional interior design compared to previous versions, with a digital gauge cluster in front of the driver set into a trapezoidal housing. The main 8-inch touchscreen in the center of the dash is also in a trapezoid-shaped panel in LE, XLE, and Nightshade models, though the Limited gets a larger 12.3-inch screen with a more squared-off shape. Base LE models get cloth seating surfaces in black or gray, but all other Prius variants get a leatherette that Toyota calls SofTex. The rakish roofline means tall occupants may find headroom a little tight in both the front and rear seats, bu there's a good amount of legroom. Cargo space—23.8 cubic feet in base models and 20.3 cubic feet in all others—is also down slightly compared to the third-generation model, but still easily accessible due to the car's hatchback shape.
Technology
A digital gauge cluster and central touchscreen infotainment system are fitted to all 2026 Prius models. Only the Limited model gets a standard 12.3-inch display (the larger screen can be optioned on other models), while other versions come standard with a small 8-inch unit. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard across the board. Toyota’s latest infotainment software package is easy to use and, in addition to its touch-based menu, accepts voice commands. Prius Limited models feature an eight-speaker JBL audio system with an amplifier, while all other versions get a standard six-speaker system.
