Nissan’s focus on minor tweaks and added standard features suggests a truck that should be straightforward to live with. For used buyers, the main long-term ownership risk is that you may still need to accept the Frontier’s weaker fuel economy and transmission behavior.

What should I look for when buying a used 2023 Nissan Frontier?

Accident-free inventory is solid at 88.7% — always verify the vehicle history report.

You should still run a vehicle history report on any truck you’re considering, even if the listing looks clean. Prioritize a pre-purchase inspection that checks the transmission behavior, tire wear, and overall mechanical condition. Focus on how the truck was used, since a midsize pickup can vary a lot in wear depending on whether it was a commuter, work truck, or weekend hauler.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The 2023 Nissan Frontier is offered in four trim levels: S, SV, Pro-X, and Pro-4X. The lineup adds a Midnight Edition on the SV trim, while the Pro trims get Lava Red interior accents. Heated front seats and a heated steering wheel are available on both Pro grades, and the Pro trims also add a six-way power adjustable driver’s seat, a four-way manually adjustable passenger’s seat, and a 60/40-split flip-up rear bench seat.
• Powertrain: The standard 3.8-liter V6 produces 310 hp and 281 pound-feet of torque, paired with a nine-speed automatic transmission. Rear-wheel drive is standard, and a shift-on-the-fly four-wheel drive system is available. The Pro-X is not offered in 4WD.
• Safety package: Forward-collision warning, trailer sway control, a driver-attention monitor, automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, and rear-door alert are standard across the lineup. Lane-departure warning, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and adaptive cruise control are available but not standard on any trim. Traffic-sign recognition and intelligent cruise control are standard on Pro-4X, and the suite of advanced driver-assistance features is available on every trim.
• Infotainment: S and SV trims use an 8-inch touchscreen, while Pro-X and Pro-4X get a 9-inch touchscreen. Wireless Apple CarPlay is standard on Pro-X and Pro-4X, and Android Auto still requires a wired connection. The Pro trims also get two USB-A and two USB-C ports each, plus an available wireless charging pad.
• Fuel efficiency: The EPA has rated the 2023 Frontier at up to 20 mpg combined, with 18 mpg city and 24 mpg highway. Four-wheel-drive models are rated at 17 mpg city, 22 mpg highway, and 19 mpg combined.

Which 2023 Nissan Frontier trim should I buy?

The 2023 Nissan Frontier is offered in 4 trim levels: S, SV, Pro-X, and Pro-4X.

Here's the short version:

• S: This is the entry point, and it gives you the Frontier’s core V6 power, standard safety basics, and an 8-inch touchscreen. It makes sense if you want the lowest-cost way into the lineup and don’t need the extra comfort or tech upgrades.
• SV: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it adds more polish without jumping all the way to the Pro models. The Midnight Edition is also offered here, giving you a darker appearance package if style matters.
• Pro-X: This trim brings the larger 9-inch touchscreen, wireless Apple CarPlay, a six-speaker audio system, and the more upscale tech setup. It’s a strong choice if you want the best mix of features and value, especially if you don’t need 4WD.
• Pro-4X: This is the most capable and most feature-rich version in the lineup, with 4WD, standard traffic-sign recognition, intelligent cruise control, and the off-road-focused equipment and styling that define the trim. It suits you best if you want the most complete Frontier experience.

The safety package is available across the lineup, but some driver-assistance features remain optional on lower trims.

That softer pricing suggests the Frontier has become a bit easier to buy than it was a year ago, which can help you if you’re shopping now. For a future seller, it also means you should expect resale value to depend heavily on condition, mileage, and trim appeal rather than broad market momentum. Trucks with stronger equipment and cleaner histories should hold up better than rougher examples.

• Price trend: Prices have softened 3.16% compared with last year.

• It brings a fresh redesign with comfort, technology, and capability.

The bottom line: If you want the better-equipped and more current used Frontier, the 2023 is the stronger all-around pick. If your priority is spending less up front, the 2022 is the value-oriented alternative worth a close look.

• Cons: Sluggish transmission, Poor fuel economy.

2023 Toyota Tacoma:

• Pros: Stylish design, Great off-road capability, Excellent reputation for reliability.
• Cons: Poor fuel economy, Cramped back seat, Outdated technology.

Our experts score the 2023 Nissan Frontier 8.3/10 and the 2023 Toyota Tacoma 7.3/10. The Tacoma leans harder into off-road credibility and reliability reputation, but it gives up ground on technology and rear-seat comfort. Both trucks have poor fuel economy, so your decision comes down more to value and features versus off-road focus and reputation.
