Why it stands out
The 2023 Nissan Altima stands out in the midsize sedan market with its impressive fuel economy and a reputation for comfort. Owners appreciate its average fuel efficiency of around 40 mpg, making it a cost-effective choice for daily commuting. The Altima's driving experience is responsive, and it boasts a quality audio system that enhances the overall ride. We have had our 2023 Nissan Altima SV for about 1 month and have driven just under 1,500 miles. We purchased this car because of the mpg ratings. We are averaging over 40 mpg so far which means I am enjoying this car. The driving is responsive, the pickup is quick, but not as smooth or powerful as the 2023 Honda Accord with its turbo boost. The audio is great, and even without the added technology package I have enjoyed the seamless Bluetooth pairing. Trunk space has been enough, though a bit less than the 2023 Honda Accord. Wireless Android Auto would have been a nice feature without the technology package, but the ability to plug in works, and I cannot complain with how well it works. This model came with a power drivers seat that low-end models of the Accord did not offer. I think the car is a great value when compared to the Honda Accord and Toyota Camry if you are looking for updated technology, great gas mileage, and a lower price to get driving.

2023 Nissan Altima Price Trends
CarGurus tracks the prices of millions of used car listings every year. See how the average price of 2023 Nissan Altima prices has changed over time.
See more price trendsHow much does the 2023 Nissan Altima cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $21,362 |
| Year-Round Low | $19,557.38 |
| Year-Round High | $21,512.90 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $21,026 |
| Change vs. Last Year | +1.60% |
Prices are up 1.60% year-over-year — a sign of continued demand for this model year.
There are 7,500 listings available, which gives you a decent amount of inventory to compare. If you find a listing below $19,557.38, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
Is the 2023 Nissan Altima a good car?
Yes — the 2023 Nissan Altima earns a 5/5 user rating and a 6.33/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Technology at 9/10.
Owners consistently praise the comfortable ride, responsive driving experience, and quality audio system. The Altima also gets credit for its impressive fuel economy, which makes it appealing if you want a cost-conscious daily driver.
On the trade-off side, experts point to fairly pedestrian performance and poor visibility, and some owners wish for more wireless connectivity. In practical terms, the Altima makes the most sense if you value comfort, efficiency, and tech over driving excitement.
The model’s market position also fits shoppers who want a mainstream midsize sedan with broad trim choice and available all-wheel drive, while 33.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
Is the 2023 Nissan Altima reliable?
Owners rate it 5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner feedback also points to a car that feels dependable, trouble-free, and well suited to long-term use, with buyers repeatedly noting that they can count on it for everyday driving. Expert testing adds that Nissan’s CVT is a good one and does a decent job of mimicking a traditional automatic, which supports the Altima’s reputation for predictable operation.
Nissan also includes an Easy Fill Tire Alert, which is a small but useful ownership convenience. For used buyers, the main long-term risk is less about outright durability and more about whether the car has been maintained well and driven gently enough to avoid compounding wear.
What should I look for when buying a used 2023 Nissan Altima?
Accident-free inventory is solid at 83.6% — always verify the vehicle history report.
You should still check the report carefully, because a clean listing percentage does not replace a proper history review. Prioritize a pre-purchase inspection that focuses on visibility-related wear, brake condition, and how the car drives over rough pavement. If you’re considering a higher-trim car, make sure the added equipment works as intended and that the cabin and wheels show normal wear rather than curb damage.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The base S trim lacks many things you’re likely to want, including a more modern infotainment setup and some safety upgrades that arrive higher in the lineup. The SL trim adds a more upscale look and feel, but its standard wheel design can be vulnerable to curb rash.
- Powertrain: Most versions use a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine with a CVT. Front-wheel-drive models make 188 horsepower and 180 pound-feet of torque, while AWD versions make 182 hp and 178 lb-ft. Fuel economy ranges from 30 mpg to 32 mpg in combined driving, depending on wheel size and drivetrain.
- Safety package: Nissan Safety Shield 360 is standard and includes forward-collision warning with pedestrian detection, automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and a driver monitoring system. Rear automatic braking starts with SV, and ProPilot Assist is optional on SV and standard on SL and SR VC-Turbo.
- Infotainment: The base S trim gets a 5-inch display with Bluetooth streaming audio and a hands-free text messaging assistant. SV and SR add an 8-inch touchscreen with wired Apple CarPlay, wired Android Auto, and SiriusXM with 360L. A 12.3-inch touchscreen is available on SV and SR and standard on SL and SR VC-Turbo, with wireless Apple CarPlay, wired Android Auto, a Wi-Fi hotspot, and wireless charging.
- Fuel efficiency: Official combined fuel economy ranges from 30 mpg to 32 mpg for the standard engine, and the turbocharged model is rated at 29 mpg combined. In testing, the SL AWD returned 27.4 mpg.
Which 2023 Nissan Altima trim should I buy?
The 2023 Nissan Altima is offered in 5 trim levels: S, SV, SR, SL, SR VC-Turbo.
Here's the short version:
- Base trim: The S trim is the one to skip if you want a well-rounded used sedan. It lacks the richer infotainment setup and some of the convenience and safety upgrades that make the Altima easier to live with.
- Sweet-spot trim: The SV is the best value pick because it adds the 8-inch touchscreen, brings in more useful tech, and can be equipped with important upgrades without jumping all the way to the top of the range.
- Premium/top trim: The SL is the most luxurious choice, with the 12.3-inch touchscreen standard, wireless Apple CarPlay, wireless charging, Bose audio, and ProPilot Assist.
- Off-road trim: The SR VC-Turbo is the one to avoid if you mainly want a calm daily driver, since its extra performance focus does not change the Altima’s basic character enough to justify it for most shoppers.
ProPilot Assist is the key safety-package note to watch for: it is optional on SV and standard on SL and SR VC-Turbo.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2023 Nissan Altima?
This is a moderate market for selective buyers, so you can shop patiently but still move quickly on the right car.
- Deal availability: 33.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 7,500 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices are up 1.60% year-over-year.
- Clean inventory: 83.6% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $19,557.38, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2023 Nissan Altima's resale value?
The current average of $21,362 sits slightly above last year's $21,026.
That modest increase suggests the Altima has held value reasonably well in the near term. For you as a future seller, that means the market is still willing to pay for a clean, well-equipped example, especially if it has strong history and desirable features.
The price trend also points to steady demand rather than a sharp drop-off, which is helpful if you plan to resell within a few years. Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2023 Nissan Altima safe?
The 2023 Altima earns a five-star overall rating from NHTSA and a five-star rollover resistance rating, though it gets four-star ratings for front passenger frontal impact safety. It also earns a Top Safety Pick+ from IIHS for the 2022 calendar year, but the updated IIHS side-impact test gives it a Poor rating.
It earns a 7/10 safety score from our experts.
Nissan Safety Shield 360 is standard and includes forward-collision warning with pedestrian detection, automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and a driver monitoring system. Rear automatic braking starts with SV, while ProPilot Assist adds adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist, and lane-centering assist; it is optional on SV and standard on SL and SR VC-Turbo.
The main caveat is the Poor updated IIHS side-impact result, so you should pay close attention to crash history and side-impact repair quality on any used example.
Should I buy a 2023 Nissan Altima or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2023 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2023 if:
- 33.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Accident-free inventory is solid at 83.6% — always verify the vehicle history report.
- Price trend: Prices are up 1.60% year-over-year.
- Owners rate it 5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- The 2023 update brings revised styling, new wheel designs, and a stronger infotainment setup on higher trims.
Consider the 2022 if:
- At $18,116, the 2022 costs less than the current year's $21,362 average.
- It offers a wide trim spread with available AWD and a turbo engine.
Consider the 2024 if:
- At $20,434, the 2024 costs less than the current year's $21,362 average.
- It adds a more stable value proposition with a strong safety-tech focus.
The bottom line: If you want the best mix of current-year features, safety tech, and market availability, the 2023 is the primary path to consider. If your priority is saving money, the 2022 is the better budget play, while the 2024 is worth a look if you want a slightly newer alternative at a lower average price.
