CarGurus Analysis: 2023 Nissan Altima
overall

Summary
With 6,984 currently listed for sale and an average price of $20,962, 33.2% of 2023 Nissan Altimas for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2023 Nissan Altima 5 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 6.33 / 10.
82.6% of 2023 Altima models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
Among midsize family sedans, the 2023 Nissan Altima stands out as a comfortable, easy-to-use choice in a shrinking segment. It is one of the last midsize models still standing, which gives it added relevance for buyers who want a traditional sedan rather than an SUV. Its strengths are straightforward: the Altima is comfortable, its technology is easy to use, and it earns great safety ratings.
That appeal comes with some tradeoffs. The 2023 Altima’s performance is fairly pedestrian, its visibility is poor, and its interior materials feel cheap. Even so, it can still make sense for shoppers who value a relaxed driving experience and practical everyday usability over excitement.
Owners also tend to praise its impressive fuel economy, with reports averaging around 40 mpg, and many like its responsive driving feel and quality audio system. Some, however, miss wireless connectivity options, which can make its tech feel a little less complete than they would like.

Reviewed a 2023 Nissan Altima on Jul 27, 2023
We have had our 2023 Nissan Altima SV for about 1 month and have driven just under 1,500 miles. We purchased this car because of the mpg ratings. We are averaging over 40 mpg so far which means I am enjoying this car. The driving is responsive, the pickup is quick, but not as smooth or powerful as the 2023 Honda Accord with its turbo boost. The audio is great, and even without the added technology package I have enjoyed the seamless Bluetooth pairing. Trunk space has been enough, though a bit less than the 2023 Honda Accord. Wireless Android Auto would have been a nice feature without the technology package, but the ability to plug in works, and I cannot complain with how well it works. This model came with a power drivers seat that low-end models of the Accord did not offer. I think the car is a great value when compared to the Honda Accord and Toyota Camry if you are looking for updated technology, great gas mileage, and a lower price to get driving.

How much does the 2023 Nissan Altima cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $20,959 |
| Year-Round Low | $19,548 |
| Year-Round High | $21,453 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $20,796 |
| Change vs. Last Year | +0.78% |
Prices have held steady compared to this time last year, signaling a stable and predictable market for this model year.
With 6,985 listings available, you have a fairly broad pool to compare before you buy.
Is the 2023 Nissan Altima a good car?
Yes — the 2023 Nissan Altima earns a 5/5 user rating and a 6.33/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Technology at 9/10.
Owners consistently praise its impressive fuel economy, responsive driving feel, and quality audio system. The Altima also fits well if you want a comfortable, easy-to-use sedan in a shrinking family-car segment.
The trade-offs are clear: performance is fairly pedestrian, and the interior materials feel cheap. The overview also points to a relaxed, practical everyday driving experience rather than something especially exciting.
At 34.0% good or great deals, there is still enough market activity to give you some room to shop selectively.
Is the 2023 Nissan Altima reliable?
Owners rate it 5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner feedback points to a dependable, cost-effective car with impressive fuel economy and a driving experience many owners feel comfortable living with day to day. That same feedback also suggests you can count on it as a practical commuter rather than a high-drama ownership experience.
The expert evaluation adds that Nissan has been building its CVTs for decades, and this one does a decent job of mimicking a traditional automatic. The cost-effectiveness notes also show that the Altima lacks the free maintenance perks some rivals offer, so ownership value depends more on the car itself than on bundled extras.
For used buyers, the main long-term risk is that a well-used example may not feel as refined or well-equipped as newer rivals, so condition matters a lot.
What should I look for when buying a used 2023 Nissan Altima?
Accident-free inventory is solid at 82.6% — always verify the vehicle history report.
You should still check the history report carefully, because a clean listing percentage does not replace a proper records review. Prioritize a pre-purchase inspection that focuses on visibility-related wear, suspension behavior over rough roads, and any signs of hard use. Pay close attention to cabin condition too, since the interior materials are a known weak point.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The base S trim is the one to watch most closely because it lacks many features you are likely to want, while SV, SR, and SL bring more of the equipment shoppers usually expect.
- Powertrain: Most versions use a 2.5-liter four-cylinder with a CVT, while the SR VC-Turbo gets a more powerful turbocharged 2.0-liter engine. AWD is available only with the standard engine on SV, SR, and SL.
- Safety package: Nissan Safety Shield 360 is standard and includes forward-collision warning with pedestrian detection, automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and a driver monitoring system. Rear automatic braking starts with SV, and automatic high-beam headlights are added on SR.
- Infotainment: The base S gets a 5-inch display, Bluetooth streaming audio, and a hands-free text messaging assistant. SV and SR move to an 8-inch touchscreen with wired Apple CarPlay and wired Android Auto, while the available 12.3-inch touchscreen adds wireless Apple CarPlay, wired Android Auto, a Wi-Fi hotspot, and wireless smartphone charging.
- Fuel efficiency: Official combined fuel economy ranges from 30 mpg to 32 mpg depending on wheel size and drivetrain, and the SR VC-Turbo is rated at 29 mpg combined.
Which 2023 Nissan Altima trim should I buy?
The 2023 Nissan Altima is offered in 5 trim levels: Altima S, Altima SV, Altima SR, Altima SL, Altima SR VC-Turbo.
Here's the short version:
- Altima S: This is the entry point, but it is the one most likely to feel stripped down because it comes with the smallest display and the fewest convenience features. It makes sense only if your priority is getting into the Altima at the lowest possible price.
- Altima SV: This is the best-value choice for most shoppers because it adds the equipment gap-filling features the base trim misses, including the 8-inch touchscreen and more of the safety and convenience content you will actually use.
- Altima SR: Choose this if you want a sportier feel and a little more driver engagement, since it adds paddle shifters and automatic high beams while keeping the mainstream powertrain.
- Altima SL: This is the most luxurious standard-engine trim, with the larger available touchscreen standard, Bose audio, and the surround-view camera system. It suits you best if comfort and tech matter more than price.
- Altima SR VC-Turbo: Pick this if you want the most powerful engine and the most upscale equipment together. It is the performance-oriented choice in the lineup, but it is also the priciest.
ProPilot Assist is optional on SV and standard on SL and SR VC-Turbo.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2023 Nissan Altima?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop patiently but still move quickly on the right car.
- Deal availability: 34.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 6,985 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have held steady compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 82.6% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $19,548, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2023 Nissan Altima's resale value?
The current average of $20,959 sits slightly above last year's $20,796.
That small increase suggests the Altima has held its value fairly steadily rather than swinging sharply in either direction. For a future seller, that kind of pricing pattern usually points to a market that is stable enough to support predictable resale expectations.
Because the model year has maintained pricing while still attracting buyers looking for a practical sedan, you are less likely to face a sudden value drop if you keep the car in good condition. Strong demand for efficient, comfortable family sedans can also help support pricing when supply is limited.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2023 Nissan Altima safe?
The 2023 Nissan Altima earns a five-star overall rating from NHTSA and five-star rollover resistance, though it receives four-star ratings for front passenger frontal impact safety. It also earns a Top Safety Pick+ from IIHS for the 2022 calendar year, but the updated IIHS side-impact test gives it a Poor rating.
It earns a 7/10 safety score from our experts.
Nissan Safety Shield 360 is standard and includes forward-collision warning with pedestrian detection, automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and a driver monitoring system. Rear automatic braking starts with SV, and ProPilot Assist is optional on SV and standard on SL and SR VC-Turbo, adding adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist, and lane-centering assist.
The main caveat is the Poor updated IIHS side-impact result, which is worth weighing carefully if safety is a top priority.
Should I buy a 2023 Nissan Altima or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2023 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2023 if:
- 34.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Accident-free inventory is solid at 82.6% — always verify the vehicle history report.
- Price trend: Prices have held steady compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- It adds updated styling, a larger available touchscreen, and strong standard safety tech.
Consider the 2022 if:
- At $17,725, the 2022 costs less than the current year's $20,959 average.
- It offers broader trim and powertrain variety.
Consider the 2024 if:
- At $19,990, the 2024 costs less than the current year's $20,959 average.
- It brings a familiar, settled character with an upgraded touchscreen on higher trims.
The bottom line: If you want the most current version of this sedan’s tech and safety mix, the 2023 is the cleaner pick. If price matters most, the 2022 is the better value path, while the 2024 is worth considering if you want a slightly newer model year without paying more than the current average.
