CarGurus Analysis: 2023 BMW X7
overall

Summary
With 1,521 currently listed for sale and an average price of $55,899.00, 36.8% of 2023 BMW X7s for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2023 BMW X7 4.5 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 6.5 / 10.
89.7% of 2023 BMW X7 models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2023 BMW X7 stands out as a large luxury SUV that combines strong performance with a comfortable, quiet cabin. It is also notable for receiving a significant refresh, including new front-end styling and the latest iDrive infotainment system. Those updates give it a more modern look and feel, but the changes are not universally welcome.
What makes the 2023 BMW X7 distinctive is that its new styling may be polarizing, and its technology can be unintuitive. In other words, it brings meaningful updates, but some of the most visible and most-used changes may not improve the experience for every buyer. For shoppers who value a powerful engine, comfort, and a hushed interior, it still has clear appeal, even if the redesign is not an unqualified step forward.

A lot of pluses for 2023 X7; exterior styling, 40 more hp = 365. However, three interior design changes = no buy from me. I bought a 2022 X7 M50 because it has real climate buttons, real traditional shifter and a dash screen (2 actually) vs the gimmicky oversize screen with dozens of capacitive touch buttons for climate, etc.

Is the 2023 BMW X7 a good car?
Yes — the 2023 BMW X7 earns a 4.5/5 user rating and a 6.5/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Performance at 8/10.

Owners rate it 4.5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The X7 is described as well protected by its long list of safety features, and the review notes that those systems performed as they should during testing. The cabin is also presented as sturdy and well built, with no creaking over rough roads, which supports the case for solid day-to-day durability.
The performance side of the review points to a strong, composed powertrain lineup, and the value discussion notes that the six-cylinder version is the better efficiency choice at 22 mpg combined. If you buy used, your main long-term ownership risk is more about living with the technology and feature complexity than about basic mechanical confidence.
What should I look for when buying a used 2023 BMW X7?
Accident-free inventory is solid at 89.3% — always verify the vehicle history report.
You should still check the history report carefully and prioritize a thorough pre-purchase inspection, especially on a luxury SUV with a lot of technology and driver-assistance equipment. Focus on cabin condition, infotainment operation, and whether the vehicle’s features work as intended, since the refresh brought meaningful changes to the interior and controls.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The base Design Pure Excellence model uses chrome exterior trim, while the M Sport swaps in a dark finish. The base setup also lacks the surround-view camera system that comes with the M60i, so you should pay attention to whether the features you want are standard or tied to the higher trim.
- Powertrain: The base model uses a 3.0-liter turbocharged inline six-cylinder engine with a 48-volt mild hybrid system, while the M60i upgrades to a 4.4-liter twin-turbo V8 with a similar 48-volt hybrid system. The six-cylinder is estimated at 22 mpg combined, while the M60i is estimated at 18 mpg combined.
- Safety package: Standard equipment includes frontal collision warning with automatic emergency braking, a blind-spot monitor with rear cross-traffic alerts, lane departure warning, adaptive headlights, front and rear parking sensors, and automatic high beams. The M60i adds a surround-view camera system, and options include adaptive cruise control, lane-keep assist, forward cross-traffic alerts, and a semi-automated parking function.
- Infotainment: The latest iDrive system uses a curved display setup, but many functions have been moved into menus. The review does not cite wireless smartphone integration or over-the-air capability, so you should verify those features on the exact vehicle you’re considering.
- Fuel efficiency: The base six-cylinder is estimated at 22 mpg combined, and the M60i is estimated at 18 mpg combined.
Which 2023 BMW X7 trim should I buy?
The 2023 BMW X7 is offered in 2 trim levels: xDrive40i, M60i.
Here's the short version:
- Base trim: The xDrive40i is the value leader, and it gives you the core X7 experience with the 3.0-liter turbocharged inline six-cylinder engine and 22 mpg combined efficiency. It does not bring the M60i’s surround-view camera system, so if you want the most complete feature set, you’ll need to step up.
- Premium/top trim: The M60i adds the 4.4-liter twin-turbo V8, stronger performance, and the surround-view camera system. It also carries the higher price and lower fuel economy, so it makes the most sense if you want the most power and equipment.
The safety package includes frontal collision warning with automatic emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alerts, lane departure warning, adaptive headlights, front and rear parking sensors, and automatic high beams.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2023 BMW X7?
This is a moderate market for selective buyers, so you can shop carefully without expecting a deep bargain on every listing.
- Deal availability: 35.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 1,529 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 15.31% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 89.3% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $55,682.42, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2023 BMW X7's resale value?
The current average of $55,654 sits slightly below last year's $65,717.
That price movement suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can help you as a buyer today but may temper what a future seller can expect. If you buy at the current average or below, you may have less immediate depreciation pressure than someone who bought when prices were higher. The X7’s strong appeal as a large luxury SUV should still support demand, especially for well-kept examples with desirable equipment.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2023 BMW X7 safe?
It earns a 7/10 safety score from our experts.
Standard safety features include frontal collision warning with automatic emergency braking, a blind-spot monitor with rear cross-traffic alerts, lane departure warning, adaptive headlights, front and rear parking sensors, and automatic high beams. The M60i trim adds a surround-view camera system, and options include adaptive cruise control, lane-keep assist, forward cross-traffic alerts, and a semi-automated parking function.
The review also notes that these systems performed as they should, with no annoying false alarms or unpredictable responses. The main caveat is that the safety testing results from NHTSA and IIHS are not available in the review, so you should lean more heavily on the equipment list and a careful inspection of the exact vehicle you’re considering.
Should I buy a 2023 BMW X7 or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2023 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2023 if:
- 35.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Accident-free inventory is solid at 89.3% — always verify the vehicle history report.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 15.31% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- The 2023 model brings a significant refresh with new front-end styling and the latest iDrive infotainment system.
The bottom line: If you want the refreshed X7 with updated styling and the latest tech, the 2023 is the right path. If you’re more price-sensitive, you may want to compare nearby years and focus on the best-equipped example with the cleanest history, since the 2023’s appeal is strongest when you value the update itself.
