CarGurus Analysis: 2023 BMW X7
overall

Summary
With 1,506 currently listed for sale and an average price of $54,656, 34.5% of 2023 BMW X7s for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2023 BMW X7 4.5 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 6.5 / 10.
89.1% of 2023 X7 models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2023 BMW X7 stands out as a large luxury SUV that received a significant refresh, bringing new front-end styling and the latest iDrive infotainment system. It still has clear strengths, including a powerful engine, a comfortable ride, and a quiet cabin, which help it remain appealing as a premium family hauler.
At the same time, the update is not an unqualified improvement. The new headlights and infotainment system were described as frustrating, and the design may be polarizing. That mix of strong luxury traits and less intuitive technology gives the 2023 BMW X7 a distinctive but somewhat conflicted character.

A lot of pluses for 2023 X7; exterior styling, 40 more hp = 365. However, three interior design changes = no buy from me. I bought a 2022 X7 M50 because it has real climate buttons, real traditional shifter and a dash screen (2 actually) vs the gimmicky oversize screen with dozens of capacitive touch buttons for climate, etc.

Its the same as 2019, with no changes in the vehicle except for a larger purchase price for the same technology.

Is the 2023 BMW X7 a good car?
Yes — with a 4.5/5 user rating and a 6.5/10 expert rating, the 2023 BMW X7 lands as a strong but not flawless luxury SUV. The standout strength is Performance at 8/10.
The 2023 X7’s appeal comes from its large luxury-SUV mission: it offers a powerful engine, a comfortable ride, and a quiet cabin, while the refresh adds new front-end styling and the latest iDrive infotainment system. The trade-offs are clear, though: the new headlights and infotainment system were described as frustrating, and the design may be polarizing.
That makes it a better fit if you want a premium family hauler with strong road manners and a high-end cabin, and less ideal if you prioritize intuitive tech above all else. 35.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals, so there are still some attractive opportunities if you shop carefully.
Is the 2023 BMW X7 reliable?
Owners rate it 4.5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The 2023 X7 is presented as a well-protected, well-built luxury SUV with a strong feature set and a cabin that feels solid over rough roads. The expert review also notes that the safety systems performed as they should, with no annoying false alarms or unpredictable responses.
The performance side supports confidence too: the base six-cylinder is described as more than adequate for most drivers, while the V8 is potent and the chassis remains composed. The cost-effectiveness review also points to the six-cylinder xDrive40i as the value leader, which can help reduce ownership strain if you plan to keep the vehicle for the long haul.
For used buyers, the main long-term ownership risk is less about outright durability and more about living with a complex luxury SUV whose technology and options can make upkeep and satisfaction more dependent on how the vehicle was equipped and maintained.
What should I look for when buying a used 2023 BMW X7?
Accident-free inventory is solid at 89.1% — always verify the vehicle history report.
You should still check the vehicle history report carefully, because a clean listing percentage does not replace a proper records review. A pre-purchase inspection should focus on the condition of the electronics, the infotainment interface, and the overall operation of the luxury features that define this SUV. It also makes sense to pay close attention to cabin condition and exterior presentation, since the refresh introduced styling and trim choices that may matter a lot to you.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The base Design Pure Excellence model uses chrome exterior trim, while the M Sport swaps in a darker finish. The base trim is the one to scrutinize if you want the cleaner luxury look without the sportier appearance treatment.
- Powertrain: The lineup starts with a 3.0-liter turbocharged inline six-cylinder engine with a 48-volt mild hybrid system, and the M60i upgrades to a 4.4-liter twin-turbo V8 with a similar hybrid setup. The six-cylinder is the value choice, while the V8 is the stronger performer.
- Safety package: Standard equipment includes frontal collision warning with automatic emergency braking, a blind-spot monitor with rear cross-traffic alerts, lane departure warning, adaptive headlights, front and rear parking sensors, and automatic high beams. The M60i adds a surround-view camera system, and available features include adaptive cruise control, lane-keep assist, forward cross-traffic alerts, a semi-automated parking function, and highway driving assist.
- Infotainment: The latest iDrive system uses a curved glass display setup, but many functions have been moved into menus, which can make common tasks less intuitive. The content does not specify wireless smartphone integration or OTA capability.
- Fuel efficiency: The six-cylinder xDrive40i is estimated at 22 mpg combined, while the M60i is estimated at 18 mpg combined.
Which 2023 BMW X7 trim should I buy?
The 2023 BMW X7 is offered in 2 trim levels: xDrive40i and M60i.
Here's the short version:
- xDrive40i: This is the value leader in the lineup, pairing the 3.0-liter turbocharged inline six-cylinder engine and 48-volt mild hybrid system with the lower starting price and the best estimated fuel economy at 22 mpg combined. It suits you best if you want the core X7 experience without paying for the V8 upgrade.
- M60i: This trim upgrades to the 4.4-liter twin-turbo V8 with 523 hp and 553 lb-ft of torque, making it the choice if you want the strongest acceleration and the most performance-focused version of the X7. It also adds a surround-view camera system.
The safety content notes that the M60i adds a surround-view camera system, while other advanced driver-assistance features are available rather than standard.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2023 BMW X7?
This is a moderate market for selective buyers, so you should shop with a clear target and be ready to move when the right listing appears.
- Deal availability: 35.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 1,499 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 16.68% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 89.1% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $54,423, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2023 BMW X7's resale value?
The current average of $54,423 sits slightly below last year's $65,320.
That drop suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can help you as a buyer today but may also mean future resale gains are more limited if prices continue to normalize. If you buy at the right number now, you reduce the risk of overpaying into a softening market.
The X7 still has the kind of premium positioning that can support demand, especially because it combines strong performance, a quiet cabin, and a comfortable ride. If you keep mileage reasonable and choose a well-equipped, well-maintained example, you should have a better shot at preserving value than if you buy a poorly optioned or neglected one.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2023 BMW X7 safe?
The 2023 BMW X7 does not have published crash-test results from IIHS or NHTSA in the provided data.
It earns a 7/10 safety score from our experts.
Standard safety features include frontal collision warning with automatic emergency braking, a blind-spot monitor with rear cross-traffic alerts, lane departure warning, adaptive headlights, front and rear parking sensors, and automatic high beams. The M60i trim adds a surround-view camera system, and available features include adaptive cruise control, lane-keep assist, forward cross-traffic alerts, a semi-automated parking function, and highway driving assist.
A key caveat is that some of the more advanced driver-assistance features are not standard, so you should confirm exactly which systems are fitted on the used example you’re considering.
Should I buy a 2023 BMW X7 or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2023 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2023 if:
- 35.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Accident-free inventory is solid at 89.1% — always verify the vehicle history report.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 16.68% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- The 2023 model brings a significant refresh with new front-end styling and the latest iDrive infotainment system.
The bottom line: If you want the refreshed X7 with strong performance, a quiet cabin, and a comfortable ride, the 2023 is the right target. If you’re especially price-sensitive, you may want to compare listings carefully and focus on the six-cylinder xDrive40i, which gives you the best blend of value and efficiency.
