Performance sedans are nowhere near as popular as they once were, but many automakers—European ones especially—continue to build and refine their sports car lineups. Audi is one of them, and though we don’t see many of the company’s best vehicles here, we do get several performance vehicles from the brand. The S4 is a stalwart sedan in the Audi lineup, and it rolls into 2023 with mild updates. The 2023 S4 picks up a Black Optic package that includes black rocker sill blades, a rear spoiler, black exhaust tips, and blacked-out badges. A new 19-inch wheel design joins the lineup for 2023, and all-season tires are available. Last, new Chronos Gray (replacing Quantum Gray) and District Green colors are available for the entire A4 family. The functional bits of the S4 remain in place, which means a 3.0-liter six-cylinder engine, all-wheel drive, and an eight-speed Tiptronic gearbox. The car derives 349 horsepower and 369 pound-feet of torque from that combination, which is good for a 0-60 mph time of 4.4 seconds and a top speed of 155 mph. The S4 is quicker than much of its competition, and its eight-speed transmission is impressively responsive. Audi programmed the car to straddle the line between all-out performance and posh luxury, so it’s a little softer and kinder than brutes from AMG or BMW’s M division. That said, the car delivers excellent handling and grip, thanks to all-wheel drive and standard summer tires. The 2022 S4 returned 20 mpg city, 27 highway, and 23 combined, so the new car should land in that range. The numbers are competitive in its segment and blow V8-powered cars out of the water. Audi’s interior designs are among the best in their respective classes, and the S4 should continue that tradition. Sport seats with heating and optional massage functions, a flat-bottom steering wheel, and high-end materials all elevate the S4’s cabin. The back seats are tight, however, and the trunk is just 13 cubic feet—the smallest in its class. The S4 will continue to get a 10.1-inch infotainment touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Audi did away with the rotary controller in favor of a touchscreen in 2022, so the system offers voice controls and touch inputs instead. The virtual cockpit systems from earlier models will be available, which including a 12.3-inch digital configurable gauge cluster that can show vehicle information, maps, infotainment details, and more. Standard safety features include forward-collision warnings and automatic emergency braking. Several advanced driver aids are available, including a parking-assist system with parallel and perpendicular modes, adaptive cruise control with lane assist, and a top-view camera system. The A4 earned a Top Safety Pick award for the 2022 model year, so the 2023 S4 should do the same.
