Is the 2022 Volkswagen Tiguan a good car?

Yes — the 2022 Volkswagen Tiguan earns a 4.6/5 user rating and a 7.7/10 expert rating. The model scores 9/10 across Form and function and Safety.

Owners consistently praise its technology, safety features, comfort, and user-friendly interface, and they also like how it handles different driving conditions. The Tiguan’s broad appeal comes through clearly in its practical compact-SUV packaging and its more substantial feel than many rivals. Is the 2022 Volkswagen Tiguan reliable?

Owner feedback points to a dependable, trouble-free ownership experience, with praise for the Tiguan’s comfort and confidence in everyday use. The expert evaluation also emphasizes the Tiguan’s standard maintenance coverage and connected-services support, which adds peace of mind for the first few years of ownership. For used buyers, the main long-term risk is making sure prior accident damage or neglected upkeep hasn’t compromised the vehicle’s condition.

What should I look for when buying a used 2022 Volkswagen Tiguan?

Accident-free inventory is solid at 84% — always verify the vehicle history report.

You should still check the history report carefully, because accident-free status is only a starting point. A pre-purchase inspection matters here, especially if you want to confirm that the cabin, electronics, and safety systems are all working as intended. Focus on overall condition, since owner feedback mentions concerns about build quality after accidents.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The lineup includes S, SE, SE R-Line Black, and SEL R-Line. The base S is the most stripped-down version, while higher trims add a more upscale look, richer cabin materials, and more convenience features.
• Powertrain: The Tiguan uses a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine with 184 horsepower and 221 pound-feet of torque, paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission. Front-wheel drive is standard, and 4Motion all-wheel drive is available.
• Safety package: Front Assist and Side Assist are standard on the S, and IQ Drive adds Travel Assist and Emergency Assist. Some features are trim-dependent, so verify exactly which driver-assistance systems are included on the vehicle you’re considering.
• Infotainment: The base S uses a 6.5-inch touchscreen with MIB2, while most versions get an 8-inch MIB3 system with standard Car-Net connected services and App-Connect smartphone mirroring. The SEL R-Line adds a 10.25-inch Digital Cockpit Pro display and a redesigned navigation system.
• Fuel efficiency: The Tiguan’s 4Motion setup is rated at no better than 24 mpg in combined driving.

Which 2022 Volkswagen Tiguan trim should I buy?

The 2022 Volkswagen Tiguan is offered in 4 trim levels: S, SE, SE R-Line Black, and SEL R-Line.

Here's the short version:

• S: This is the entry point, and it gives you the core Tiguan experience with standard safety tech, heated front seats, push-button start, and the basic infotainment setup. It makes sense if you want the lowest-cost way into the model, but it is also the most basic version.
• SE: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it adds remote engine starting and the more advanced MIB3 infotainment system while staying below the sportier appearance packages. If you want a balanced mix of features and price, this is the one to target.
• SE R-Line Black: Choose this if you want the blacked-out appearance treatment and a sportier look without jumping all the way to the top trim. It is mainly about style and presentation.
• SEL R-Line: This is the most upscale choice, with the richer cabin, larger digital display, premium audio, and available convenience features that make the Tiguan feel more polished. It is the right pick if you want the most equipment and the most premium feel.

The safety package is strongest on the higher trims, so check feature content carefully before you buy.

• Inventory: There are 4,918 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 11.89% compared with last year.

What is the 2022 Volkswagen Tiguan's resale value?

The current average of $19,895 sits slightly below last year's $22,580.

That decline suggests the Tiguan has become more affordable for used buyers, which can help demand in the near term. For a future seller, the current pricing trend means you may need to be realistic about expectations if you plan to resell soon. The good news is that a model with broad appeal and strong owner satisfaction can still hold buyer interest better than a less popular alternative.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.6/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2022 Volkswagen Tiguan safe?

The 2022 Volkswagen Tiguan earned a “Top Safety Pick” rating from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS).

It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.

Front Assist, which includes forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, and Side Assist with blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert, are standard on the Tiguan S. Volkswagen also adds Travel Assist, which combines adaptive cruise control with lane-centering assistance, and Emergency Assist, which can slow the SUV to a stop if the driver becomes unresponsive. Make sure you verify which systems are present on the trim you’re shopping, since some features are trim-dependent.

Should I buy a 2022 Volkswagen Tiguan or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2022 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2022 if:

• Accident-free inventory is solid at 84% — always verify the vehicle history report.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 11.89% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.6/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• It adds new safety technology while keeping the Tiguan’s familiar, practical formula.

Consider the 2021 if:

• It emphasizes space and everyday usability.

Consider the 2023 if:

• At $21,983, the 2023 costs more than the current year's $19,895 average.
• It feels larger inside and offers a third-row seat.

The bottom line: If you want the best mix of value, safety tech, and broad availability, the 2022 is the smart default. If price is your top priority, the 2021 is the cheaper path; if you want more interior flexibility, the 2023 is worth a look.
