overall

Summary
With 6,265 currently listed for sale and an average price of $33,381.00, 31.7% of 2022 Toyota Tacomas for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2022 Toyota Tacoma 4.36 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 7.5 / 10.

Why it stands out
The 2022 Toyota Tacoma stands out as a small pickup that still draws buyers despite showing its age. It offers modern tech and safety features, but its biggest appeal remains its big off-road ability. That combination makes it especially attractive to shoppers who want a smaller alternative to a full-size pickup and still plan to use it for camping trips, kayaking outings, mountain biking, or weekend projects.
It also has a few practical strengths that help explain its staying power. The Tacoma offers easy-to-use technology and a manual transmission, and its bed is useful for hauling supplies. At the same time, it is not without compromises: the base engine is underwhelming, the back seat is cramped, and the ride quality is poor.

It has every feature I was looking for except BSM. Definitely a good value compared to others with the same opinions and miles. There really isnt any other models out there to compare it too. It is an awesome truck.

We have owned it 4 days. The Tacoma has great reviews and is very reliable. The V6 engine has enough power and still gets decent gas mileage.

Reviewed a 2022 Toyota SR5 V6 Double Cab 4WD on Feb 7, 2023
For years, all I wanted was a Toyota Tacoma, but the price tag always scared me off. Finally, I had the opportunity to purchase a brand new 2022 Taco, at a lower price than a used one (crazy times). While I loved the idea of owning vehicle, and of course, the looks, usability seemed to have been lacking. For the price, the Tacoma seems to lack in features that their competitors have (Colorado, Canyon, 1500, etc), and the seating is quite cramped. Anyone sitting in the backseat, with the exception of my 5 year old daughter was uncomfortable. In addition, the finish details lacked in quality (plastics), again, for the price. No doubt that the Tacoma has built an exceptional reputation based on reliability, but I feel like the competitors are starting the unseat the mid-sized stalwart. After 4k miles, I sold the truck and went in a different direction. All said, damn that truck looked good!

Generally — the 2022 Toyota Tacoma earns a 4.36/5 user rating and a 7.5/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Safety at 9/10.
Drivers consistently praise its reliability, fuel economy, and off-road capability. The user feedback also points to strong resale value and solid performance in rough terrain, which fits a truck that appeals to shoppers who want a smaller alternative to a full-size pickup for camping trips, kayaking outings, mountain biking, or weekend projects.
The trade-offs are familiar: the base engine is underpowered, the technology can feel dated, and some buyers mention cramped seating. That means you should think of it as a truck that leans more toward durability and capability than comfort or refinement.
Even so, the Tacoma’s easy-to-use tech and manual transmission availability help it stay appealing, and 31.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals, which gives you room to shop selectively.
Is the 2022 Toyota Tacoma reliable?
Owners rate it 4.36/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction.
User feedback repeatedly points to reliability, trouble-free ownership, and a truck that people feel good about keeping for the long haul. The expert notes also describe it as “supremely trusty and durable,” which reinforces the sense that this is a vehicle built to be counted on.
That said, used buyers should still pay close attention to maintenance history, drivetrain condition, and how hard the truck was used, because capability-focused trucks can vary a lot from one example to the next.
What should I look for when buying a used 2022 Toyota Tacoma?
Accident-free inventory is solid at 81.5% — always verify the vehicle history report.
You should still check the report carefully, because a clean listing percentage does not replace a proper history review. Prioritize a pre-purchase inspection that focuses on suspension wear, steering feel, brake condition, and signs of heavy off-road use. It also helps to compare cabin condition and bed wear against the mileage, since those clues can tell you how the truck was actually used.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The SR starts with 16-inch steel wheels, a Class IV tow-hitch receiver, manual seats, a 7-inch touchscreen, and standard Toyota Safety Sense, while higher trims add features like fog lights, an 8-inch touchscreen, wireless charging, a power-adjustable driver’s seat, leather upholstery, and a JBL audio system. The base trim leaves out several comfort and convenience upgrades, so you should decide early whether you want a work-focused truck or one with more everyday polish.
- Powertrain: The Tacoma offers a 2.7-liter four-cylinder with 159 horsepower and 180 pound-feet of torque, plus an optional 3.5-liter V6 with 278 hp and 265 lb-ft. The V6 is the better choice for most shoppers, and it is standard on every trim above the SR5.
- Safety package: Toyota Safety Sense is standard and includes forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, pedestrian detection, automatic high beams, adaptive cruise control, and lane-departure warning. Blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and rear parking sensors are optional.
- Infotainment: The base truck gets a 7-inch touchscreen, while every trim but the SR upgrades to an 8-inch screen. Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and Amazon Alexa are supported, and the system is designed to be simple and easy to use.
- Fuel efficiency: The rear-wheel-drive four-cylinder returns 20 mpg city, 23 mpg highway, and 21 mpg combined, while the rear-wheel-drive V6 returns 19 mpg city, 24 mpg highway, and 21 mpg combined. With 4WD, the four-cylinder returns 19 mpg city, 22 mpg highway, and 20 mpg combined, and the V6 returns 18 mpg city, 22 mpg highway, and 20 mpg combined. The V6 with manual transmission and 4WD returns 17 mpg city, 21 mpg highway, and 18 mpg combined.
Which 2022 Toyota Tacoma trim should I buy?
The 2022 Toyota Tacoma is offered in 6 trim levels: SR, SR5, TRD Sport, TRD Off-Road, Limited, and TRD Pro.
Here's the short version:
- SR: This is the most affordable entry point, and it gives you the essentials: a 7-inch touchscreen, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Amazon Alexa, a Class IV tow-hitch receiver, and Toyota Safety Sense. It makes sense if you want the lowest-cost Tacoma and are willing to live without many comfort upgrades.
- SR5: This trim adds fog lights, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, and an 8-inch touchscreen, with a power-sliding rear window if you choose the Double Cab and V6. It is the best-value choice if you want a more livable daily driver without jumping too far up the price ladder.
- TRD Sport: This trim adds 17-inch alloy wheels, a TRD-tuned sport suspension, push-button start, dual-zone automatic climate control, wireless device charging, and a 10-way power-adjustable driver’s seat. It suits you if you want a more polished and better-equipped Tacoma for everyday use.
- TRD Off-Road: This trim adds all-terrain tires, Bilstein shocks, a locking rear differential, and a 4.2-inch color display in the instrument panel. It is the right pick if you want the most trail-ready setup short of the top model.
- Limited: This trim shifts toward comfort with leather upholstery, a JBL premium audio system, navigation, heated front seats, and a power moonroof. It fits you best if you care more about road comfort and upscale features than trail hardware.
- TRD Pro: This is the most specialized choice, with unique exterior styling, added underbody skid plates, LED fog lights, a TRD-tuned suspension, and a TRD sport exhaust. It is the one to buy if off-road capability is your top priority.
Toyota Safety Sense comes standard, but blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and rear parking sensors remain optional.

If you find a listing below $32,063.55, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2022 Toyota Tacoma's resale value?
The current average of $33,438 sits slightly below last year's $34,462.
That price movement suggests the market has eased a bit, which can help you buy more carefully now and may also support steadier resale later if you choose well. A truck with a strong reputation for reliability and off-road usefulness tends to stay relevant with used buyers, especially when it has broad appeal across work and recreation use cases.
If you plan to sell later, condition and trim choice will matter a lot. Well-kept examples with desirable equipment should hold attention better than trucks that show heavy wear or lack the features shoppers expect.
Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.36/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2022 Toyota Tacoma safe?
The 2022 Toyota Tacoma earns a four-star overall rating from NHTSA, with four-star ratings in frontal crash and rollover, and five-star ratings in side crash tests.
It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.
Toyota Safety Sense comes standard and includes forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, pedestrian detection, automatic high beams, adaptive cruise control, and lane-departure warning. Blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and rear parking sensors are optional, so you should look closely at the exact truck you are considering.
One caveat is the backup camera image, which is described as very grainy, so you should be extra careful when backing up.
Should I buy a 2022 Toyota Tacoma or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2022 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2022 if:
- 31.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Accident-free inventory is solid at 81.5% — always verify the vehicle history report.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 2.97% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.36/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
- It combines strong off-road ability with easy-to-use tech and standard safety features.
Consider the 2021 if:
- At $32,385, the 2021 costs less than the current year's $33,438 average.
- It offers broad choice, including multiple engines, body styles, drivetrains, and special editions.
Consider the 2023 if:
- At $36,424, the 2023 costs more than the current year's $33,438 average.
- It leans harder into reliability and off-road appeal while facing pressure from newer rivals.
The bottom line: If you want the best balance of price, inventory, and proven Tacoma appeal, the 2022 is the primary year to target. If you are especially price-sensitive, the 2021 is the better value play, while the 2023 makes more sense only if you are willing to pay extra for a newer model-year position.
