Is the 2022 Toyota Tacoma a good car?

Generally — the 2022 Toyota Tacoma earns a 4.36/5 user rating and a 7.5/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Safety at 9/10.

Drivers consistently praise its reliability, fuel economy, and off-road capability, and they also like its strong resale value and rugged performance. The Tacoma’s easy-to-use technology is another recurring plus. On the other hand, the base engine and cramped seating come up often as trade-offs, and the truck’s value can feel less compelling versus rivals.

For you, that means the Tacoma makes the most sense if you want a smaller truck for commuting during the week and outdoor use on the weekends. It remains appealing if you value capability and a traditional truck feel more than polish.

Only 32.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals, so the better examples can move quickly.

User feedback points to reliability, durability, and trouble-free ownership as major strengths, with drivers also describing it as a truck they can count on over time. The expert evaluation reinforces that impression by calling it supremely trusty and durable.

The Tacoma also leans into old-school simplicity in a way that can help long-term ownership feel straightforward, especially if you prefer familiar controls over complicated tech. For used buyers, the main risk is less about the truck’s core toughness and more about choosing one that has been maintained well and not abused.

What should I look for when buying a used 2022 Toyota Tacoma?

Accident-free inventory is solid at 79.6% — always verify the vehicle history report.

You should still run a history report on any truck you’re considering, even if the listing looks clean. Prioritize a thorough inspection of the ride quality, cabin condition, and any signs of hard use, since this model is often bought for work and recreation. Pay close attention to how the truck drives and whether the equipment matches the trim level you want.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The SR starts with 16-inch steel wheels, a Class IV tow-hitch receiver, manual seats, a 7-inch touchscreen, and Toyota Safety Sense. • Powertrain: The base 2.7-liter four-cylinder makes 159 horsepower and 180 pound-feet of torque, but the optional 3.5-liter V6 makes 278 hp and 265 lb-ft and is the better choice. Both engines use a six-speed automatic, while TRD models are also available with a six-speed manual transmission.
• Safety package: Toyota Safety Sense is standard and includes forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, pedestrian detection, automatic high beams, adaptive cruise control, and lane-departure warning. Blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and rear parking sensors are optional.

Which 2022 Toyota Tacoma trim should I buy?

The 2022 Toyota Tacoma is offered in 6 trim levels: SR, SR5, TRD Sport, TRD Off-Road, Limited, and TRD Pro.

Here's the short version:

• SR: This is the value entry point if you want the Tacoma’s core capability at the lowest price. You get the standard safety suite, a 7-inch touchscreen, and the basic truck hardware, but it’s also the most stripped-down version.
• SR5: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it adds useful everyday upgrades like fog lights, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, and an 8-inch touchscreen without jumping too far up the price ladder.
• TRD Sport: Choose this if you want a more polished feel and extra convenience features, including sport suspension, push-button start, dual-zone climate control, wireless charging, and a power-adjustable driver’s seat.
• TRD Off-Road: This is the pick if trail use matters most. The all-terrain tires, Bilstein shocks, and locking rear differential make it the most purpose-built off-road choice in the lineup.
• Limited: This is the comfort-focused choice, with leather upholstery, JBL audio, navigation, heated front seats, and a power moonroof.
• TRD Pro: This is the top-end choice for buyers who want the most rugged hardware and distinctive styling, including skid plates, a TRD-tuned suspension, and a sport exhaust.

Toyota Safety Sense is standard, while blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and rear parking sensors remain optional.

• Deal availability: 32.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 6,233 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 2.13% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 79.6% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $31,996, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2022 Toyota Tacoma's resale value?

The current average of $33,041 sits slightly below last year's $33,761.

That softer pricing can help you buy in at a more favorable point, which matters if you plan to resell later. If the market stays steady, a lower entry price can reduce the amount of value you need to recover down the road. The Tacoma’s broad appeal and strong owner satisfaction should also help support demand when it’s time to sell.

Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.36/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2022 Toyota Tacoma safe?

The 2022 Toyota Tacoma earns a four-star overall rating from NHTSA, with four-star ratings in frontal crash and rollover tests and five-star ratings in side crash tests.

It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.

Toyota Safety Sense is standard and includes forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, pedestrian detection, automatic high beams, adaptive cruise control, and lane-departure warning. Blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and rear parking sensors are optional. The backup camera is standard, but the image is described as very grainy, so you should be especially careful when backing up.

Should I buy a 2022 Toyota Tacoma or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2022 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2022 if:

• 32.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Accident-free inventory is solid at 79.6% — always verify the vehicle history report.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 2.13% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.36/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
• It blends easy-to-use tech with strong off-road ability and a traditional truck feel.

Consider the 2021 if:

• At $32,266, the 2021 costs less than the current year's $33,041 average.
• It offers broad configuration choice and standard dual-zone climate control on V6 models.

Consider the 2023 if:

• At $36,147, the 2023 costs more than the current year's $33,041 average.
• It leans harder into the Tacoma’s reputation for bullet-proof reliability and off-road appeal.

The bottom line: If you want the best balance of current pricing, strong satisfaction, and proven capability, the 2022 is the primary year to target. If your priority is saving money, the 2021 is the better value play; if you want to spend more for a newer-feeling market position, the 2023 is the alternative to compare.
