How much does the 2022 Toyota Tacoma cost?

Is the 2022 Toyota Tacoma a good car?

Generally — the 2022 Toyota Tacoma earns a 4.4/5 user rating and a 7.5/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Safety at 9/10.

Drivers consistently praise its reliability, fuel economy, and off-road capability, and they also like its good resale value and strong performance in rough terrain. The Tacoma’s easy-to-use technology is another recurring plus.

The trade-offs are familiar: some drivers call out underpowered engines, cramped seating, and weaker value versus rivals. That lines up with the overview, which frames this truck as a smaller alternative to a full-size pickup that works well for camping, kayaking, mountain biking, and weekend-project duty.

Good and great deals account for 34.6% of listings, so you can still find some market-friendly opportunities if you shop carefully.

Is the 2022 Toyota Tacoma reliable?

Owners rate it 4.4/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction.

Drivers describe it as reliable, fuel-efficient, and capable of handling rough terrain, and they also point to its durable feel and strong resale value. The expert evaluation reinforces that impression by calling it “supremely trusty and durable” and built for whatever activity you throw at it.

Toyota also leans into practicality with easy-to-use technology and a truck that feels familiar rather than overly complicated. For used buyers, the main long-term ownership risk is that age-related compromises can show up in comfort, refinement, and everyday livability.

What should I look for when buying a used 2022 Toyota Tacoma?

Accident-free inventory is solid at 77.1% — always verify the vehicle history report.

You should still run a vehicle history report on any truck you’re considering, even if the listing looks clean. Prioritize a pre-purchase inspection if you plan to use it for towing, trail driving, or frequent commuting, since condition can vary a lot by how the truck was used. Focus on the cabin, ride quality, and overall wear, because those are the areas where this model’s age and usage history are most likely to show.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The SR starts with 16-inch steel wheels, a 7-inch touchscreen, and Toyota Safety Sense, while the SR5 adds fog lights, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, and an 8-inch touchscreen. Higher trims add more comfort and capability, with the TRD Off-Road bringing all-terrain tires, Bilstein shocks, and a locking rear differential, and the Limited leaning more toward road comfort with leather upholstery, JBL audio, navigation, heated front seats, and a power moonroof.
• Powertrain: The base 2.7-liter four-cylinder makes 159 horsepower and 180 pound-feet of torque, and the optional 3.5-liter V6 makes 278 hp and 265 lb-ft. Both engines can use rear-wheel drive or available four-wheel drive through a six-speed automatic, and the TRD models are also available with a six-speed manual transmission.
• Safety package: Toyota Safety Sense is standard and includes forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, pedestrian detection, automatic high beams, adaptive cruise control, and lane-departure warning. Blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and rear parking sensors are optional, so check whether the truck you’re considering has them.
• Infotainment: The base truck uses a 7-inch touchscreen, while every trim but the SR gets an 8-inch screen. The system supports Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and Amazon Alexa, and the layout is described as easy to use.
• Fuel efficiency: The 2.7-liter four-cylinder with rear-wheel drive returns 20 mpg city and 23 mpg highway. The V6 with rear-wheel drive returns 19 mpg city and 24 mpg highway, while four-wheel-drive versions are lower.

Which 2022 Toyota Tacoma trim should I buy?

The 2022 Toyota Tacoma is offered in 6 trim levels: SR, SR5, TRD Sport, TRD Off-Road, Limited, and TRD Pro.

Here's the short version:

• SR: This is the value entry point if you want the Tacoma’s core strengths without paying for extras. It includes the standard safety suite, a 7-inch touchscreen, and the basic truck hardware, but it also makes the age and simplicity of the cabin most obvious.
• SR5: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it adds useful everyday upgrades like fog lights, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, and an 8-inch touchscreen without jumping too far up the price ladder.
• TRD Sport: Choose this if you want a more polished feel and extra convenience features, including a TRD-tuned sport suspension, push-button start, dual-zone automatic climate control, wireless device charging, and a power-adjustable driver’s seat.
• TRD Off-Road: This is the trim to target if trail use matters most. It adds all-terrain tires, Bilstein shocks, a locking rear differential, and trail-focused features that make it the most capable choice for rough terrain.
• Limited: Pick this if you care more about comfort and road manners than trail hardware. It adds leather upholstery, JBL audio, navigation, heated front seats, and a power moonroof.
• TRD Pro: This is the most specialized choice, with unique styling, skid plates, LED fog lights, a TRD-tuned suspension, and a TRD sport exhaust for buyers who want the most off-road-focused Tacoma.

Toyota Safety Sense comes standard, while blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and rear parking sensors remain optional.

What is the 2022 Toyota Tacoma's resale value?

The current average of $32,634 sits slightly below last year's $33,130.

That modest decline suggests the market has cooled a bit, which can help you as a buyer today but may slightly soften what a future seller can ask. Even so, the Tacoma’s pricing remains relatively firm, which is a sign that demand is still healthy. Strong owner satisfaction also helps support long-term desirability, especially for shoppers who want a truck with a proven reputation.

Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.4/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2022 Toyota Tacoma safe?

The Toyota Tacoma earns a four-star overall rating from NHTSA, with four-star ratings in frontal crash and rollover, and five-star ratings in side crash tests.

It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.

Toyota Safety Sense is standard and includes forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, pedestrian detection, automatic high beams, adaptive cruise control, and lane-departure warning. Blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and rear parking sensors are optional, so you’ll want to check the equipment list carefully on any used example.

The backup camera is standard, but the image is described as grainy, so backing up still deserves extra attention. IIHS has not yet tested this model year.

Should I buy a 2022 Toyota Tacoma or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2022 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2022 if:

• 34.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Accident-free inventory is solid at 77.1% — always verify the vehicle history report.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 1.50% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.4/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
• It balances easy-to-use tech, available manual transmission, and strong off-road ability.

Consider the 2021 if:

• At $31,756, the 2021 costs less than the current year's $32,634 average.
• It offers broad lineup variety with multiple engines, body styles, and trims.

Consider the 2023 if:

• At $35,595, the 2023 costs more than the current year's $32,634 average.
• It leans harder into bullet-proof reliability and stronger off-road appeal.

The bottom line: If you want the best mix of current pricing, inventory, and proven Tacoma strengths, the 2022 is the primary path to consider. If you’re especially price-sensitive, the 2021 can save you money while keeping much of the same formula.
