Is the 2019 Toyota Tacoma a good car?

Generally — the 2019 Toyota Tacoma earns a 4.2/5 user rating and a 7.7/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Cost effectiveness at 10/10.

Drivers commonly praise its reliability, solid performance, and features, and many also value its longevity and resale value. The overview points to a truck with a loyal following, a distinctive personality, and strong everyday appeal for buyers who want something straightforward and durable. The main trade-offs are outdated technology and poor ride quality, and the expert notes also point to a rough, old-school driving experience.

Good and great deals account for 34.2% of listings, so there is still some room to shop selectively.

Is the 2019 Toyota Tacoma reliable?

User feedback highlights reliability, longevity, and a reputation for being dependable over time. The expert notes reinforce that theme by describing the Tacoma as legendary for its indestructibility and known to hold its value over time. Toyota also includes free scheduled maintenance for the first two years or 25,000 miles, which helps reduce early ownership costs.

For used buyers, the main long-term risk is that a truck with this reputation can still hide wear, especially if it has been worked hard or poorly maintained.

What should I look for when buying a used 2019 Toyota Tacoma?

At 62.5% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a close inspection of bodywork, alignment, and signs of prior repair. Pay extra attention to ride quality, braking feel, and cabin condition, since those areas can reveal hard use or neglect. If you are comparing multiple listings, focus on the cleanest example rather than the cheapest one.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: Toyota differentiates the Tacoma trims with unique grilles, wheels, hoods, and finishes, and the cabin uses hard, durable plastics with simple analog gauges and large knobs and buttons. The base setup is intentionally basic, so you should expect fewer comfort and convenience features there.
• Powertrain: Most Tacomas use a direct-injected, Atkinson-cycle, 3.5-liter V6 with 278 horsepower and 265 pound-feet of torque. It is paired with a 6-speed automatic, and the truck can be equipped with rear-wheel drive or 4-wheel drive.
• Safety package: Every 2019 Tacoma gets Toyota Safety Sense, including adaptive cruise control, forward-collision warning with pedestrian detection, automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, sway warning, and automatic high-beam headlights. Blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert is available for most versions.
• Infotainment: The Tacoma uses a 7-inch display, and the system lacks Apple CarPlay and Android Auto for this model year. The available JBL audio system is a plus, but the interface itself is dated.
• Fuel efficiency: The expert test truck returned 20 mpg in combined driving according to the EPA, and it averaged 20.1 mpg over the full test week.

Which 2019 Toyota Tacoma trim should I buy?

The 2019 Toyota Tacoma is offered in 6 trim levels: SR, SR5, TRD Sport, TRD Off-Road, Limited, and TRD Pro.

Here's the short version:

• SR: This is the entry point, so it makes the most sense if you want the Tacoma’s core truck character at the lowest price and can live with the most basic equipment.
• SR5: This is the best-value trim for most shoppers because it adds more everyday usability without moving too far up the price ladder.
• TRD Sport: Choose this if you want a more style-forward Tacoma with a stronger emphasis on appearance and road presence.
• TRD Off-Road: This is the one to buy if you want the Tacoma’s off-road hardware and the most trail-focused capability in the lineup.
• Limited: This trim is the best fit if you want the most upscale Tacoma experience, especially in Double Cab, short-bed, V6, 4WD form.
• TRD Pro: Pick this if you want the most rugged, most specialized version of the Tacoma and are willing to pay for it.

Toyota Safety Sense is standard across the lineup, while blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert is available for most versions.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2019 Toyota Tacoma?

This is a moderate market for selective buyers, so it makes sense to compare listings carefully and move quickly on the right one.

• Deal availability: 34.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 3,232 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 2.63% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 62.5% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $28,427, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2019 Toyota Tacoma's resale value?

The current average of $28,686 sits slightly below last year's $29,461.

That softer pricing can help you buy more confidently now, but it also means future sellers may not see the same appreciation they might have expected in a tighter market. Even so, the Tacoma’s strong reputation and loyal buyer base should help support demand when you eventually resell it. Its broad appeal as a durable midsize truck gives it an advantage over many rivals.

Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.2/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2019 Toyota Tacoma safe?

The Tacoma earns an Acceptable IIHS result for small overlap frontal-impact protection in Double Cab form, and the NHTSA gives the Double Cab a four-star overall rating for crash protection.

It earns an 8/10 safety score from our experts.

Toyota Safety Sense is standard and includes adaptive cruise control, forward-collision warning with pedestrian detection, automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, sway warning, and automatic high-beam headlights. Blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert is available for most versions. The main caveats are the Marginal headlight performance and LATCH anchor access ratings, plus the fact that the Access Cab was not assessed in the small-overlap test.

Should I buy a 2019 Toyota Tacoma or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2019 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2019 if:

• 34.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 62.5% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 2.63% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.2/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
• The 2019 keeps the Tacoma’s rugged, old-school character while still offering standard Toyota Safety Sense.

Consider the 2020 if:

• At $30,090, the 2020 costs more than the current year's $28,686 average.
• It adds Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Amazon Alexa compatibility, and an 8-inch screen.

The bottom line: Buy the 2019 if you want the lower average price and can live with its dated tech. If you want a more modern infotainment setup, the 2020 is the better path, but you should expect to pay more.

How does the 2019 Toyota Tacoma compare to the 2019 Ford Ranger?

Our experts score the 2019 Toyota Tacoma 7.7/10 and the 2019 Ford Ranger 7.2/10. The Tacoma is the pricier used buy, but it brings stronger resale appeal and a more established reputation. The Ranger counters with a lower average used price and better fuel economy, so it makes sense if you want a newer-feeling value play.
