Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2019 Toyota Tacoma 4.22 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 7.67 / 10.

Why it stands out
The 2019 Toyota Tacoma stands out by being unapologetically a truck, pure and simple. Its raw honesty may seem unappealing at first, but that straightforward character becomes one of its most endearing traits. The truck also has a stylish design and is described as excellent value for money, which helps explain why it has such a strong following.
Living with a Toyota Tacoma is portrayed as making it feel like a member of the family, a faithful companion, and a trusted partner that is ready for just about anything. At the same time, it is not trying to hide its shortcomings: the technology is outdated and the ride quality is poor. Even so, the overall impression is of a vehicle that wins buyers over through character, durability, and a clear sense of purpose.

This vehicle had a terrible engine vibration under load, it was dirty, and dirt everywhere , the tow hitch showed signs of heavy work, and when trying to explain it to the dealer , they more or less couldn’t wait for me to get off there lot.

Love this model, but not this particular unit. It has been hit three times, the back bumper was smashed. I was told it was going to be replaced. The truck was filthy, and the salesman was not honest about the Carfax or the advertised price.

| Year-Round Low | $28,440 |
| Year-Round High | $30,283 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $30,283 |

There are 3,393 listings available, which suggests you have a meaningful amount of inventory to compare.
Is the 2019 Toyota Tacoma a good car?
Generally — the 2019 Toyota Tacoma earns a 4.22/5 user rating and a 7.67/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Cost effectiveness at 10/10.
Drivers commonly praise its reliability, solid performance, and longevity, and many also value its resale strength and overall usefulness. The truck’s character and durability come through clearly in the overview, where it is framed as a faithful, trusted companion with a strong following.
The trade-offs are just as clear: the technology is outdated, the ride quality is poor, and some drivers mention limited interior space and power-related frustrations. In practical terms, this is a truck that fits you best if you want a straightforward midsize pickup with strong value and a loyal ownership experience, not a polished daily driver.
Only 31.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals, so the market rewards careful comparison rather than rushed buying.
Is the 2019 Toyota Tacoma reliable?
Owners rate it 4.22/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction.
Drivers’ feedback points to reliability, longevity, and a truck that many owners feel they can count on over time. The expert evaluation also emphasizes durability and future worth, reinforcing the sense that this model is built for long-term ownership rather than short-term novelty.
Toyota also includes free scheduled maintenance for the first two years or 25,000 miles, which helps reduce early ownership costs. For used buyers, the main long-term risk is less about the truck’s reputation and more about how hard a specific example has been used.
What should I look for when buying a used 2019 Toyota Tacoma?
At 63.7% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a close inspection of body panels, frame condition, and signs of hard use. Because this truck is often bought for work and recreation, condition matters as much as mileage. Pay extra attention to how the truck drives, how the cabin has worn, and whether any off-road or towing use has left visible damage.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The lineup ranges from SR to TRD Pro, with the trims differentiated by unique grilles, wheels, hoods, and finishes. The cabin is built around hard, durable materials, simple analog gauges, and large knobs and buttons, while the Limited trim adds a more upscale specification but still keeps the Tacoma’s rugged character.
- Powertrain: Most Tacomas use a direct-injected, Atkinson-cycle, 3.5-liter V6 with 278 horsepower and 265 pound-feet of torque. V6 models include towing hardware, and the TRD Off-Road and TRD Pro add Multi-terrain Select and Crawl Control for low-speed traction management.
- Safety package: Every 2019 Tacoma gets Toyota Safety Sense, including adaptive cruise control, forward-collision warning with pedestrian detection, automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, sway warning, and automatic high-beam headlights. Blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert is available for most versions.
- Infotainment: The truck uses a 7-inch display, and the system lacks wireless smartphone integration and modern over-the-air capability. The controls are basic, and the setup is dated compared with newer rivals.
- Fuel efficiency: The expert test notes 20 mpg in combined driving on the EPA estimate, 18.9 mpg on the test loop, and 20.1 mpg over the full week.
Which 2019 Toyota Tacoma trim should I buy?
The 2019 Toyota Tacoma is offered in 6 trim levels: SR, SR5, TRD Sport, TRD Off-Road, Limited, and TRD Pro.
Here's the short version:
- SR: This is the entry point, so it makes sense if you want the Tacoma’s core truck character at the lowest price, but you should expect the fewest comfort and convenience extras.
- SR5: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it adds more everyday usability without pushing you into the pricier off-road or luxury-focused versions.
- TRD Sport: Choose this if you want a more style- and street-oriented Tacoma with a stronger visual presence than the lower trims.
- TRD Off-Road: This is the right pick if you want the Tacoma’s most clearly trail-focused setup, including the off-road traction features described in the test notes.
- Limited: This trim suits you if you want the most upscale feel in the lineup, though it still keeps the Tacoma’s rugged, truck-first personality.
- TRD Pro: Pick this if you want the most capability-focused and most expensive version in the range.
Toyota Safety Sense is standard across the lineup, while blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert is available for most versions.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2019 Toyota Tacoma?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop patiently and still find worthwhile listings.
- Deal availability: 31.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 3,393 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 2.49% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 63.7% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $28,440, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2019 Toyota Tacoma's resale value?
The current average of $29,529 sits slightly below last year's $30,283.
That modest decline suggests the market has eased a bit, which can help you buy more confidently now. For a future seller, the key takeaway is that the Tacoma’s pricing remains relatively resilient rather than collapsing, which is consistent with strong demand for this model. If you keep the truck in clean condition and avoid accident history, you should be better positioned when it’s time to resell.
Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.22/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2019 Toyota Tacoma safe?
The 2019 Toyota Tacoma fares well in crash testing, according to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, though headlight performance and LATCH anchor access rate as Marginal and Double Cab versions get an Acceptable rating for small overlap, frontal-impact, front passenger protection.
It earns an 8/10 safety score from our experts.
Toyota Safety Sense is standard on every 2019 Tacoma, and it includes adaptive cruise control, forward-collision warning with pedestrian detection, automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, sway warning, and automatic high-beam headlights. Blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert is available for most versions. The main caveat is that some crash-test and equipment results are not as strong as the Tacoma’s overall safety reputation might suggest.
Should I buy a 2019 Toyota Tacoma or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2019 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2019 if:
- 31.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 63.7% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 2.49% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.22/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
- It pairs strong value with standard Toyota Safety Sense and a rugged, truck-first personality.
Consider the 2020 if:
- At $30,949, the 2020 costs more than the current year's $29,529 average.
- It adds important design and technology updates.
The bottom line: If you want the better price and are comfortable with the Tacoma’s older tech and rougher ride, the 2019 is the smarter buy. If you’d rather pay more for a newer version with added updates, the 2020 is the cleaner upgrade path. For most price-sensitive shoppers, the 2019 delivers the stronger value proposition.
