Is the 2022 Hyundai Elantra a good car?

Yes — the 2022 Hyundai Elantra earns 4.6/5 from owners and 8.7/10 from our experts. The standout strength is Cost effectiveness at 10/10.

The main trade-offs are the underwhelming base engine, uncomfortable seats, and some cabin noise. If you want a value-focused compact sedan with broad appeal for everyday commuting and family use, this model year fits that brief well. For used buyers, the main ownership risk is less about durability and more about choosing a well-kept example with the right trim and condition.

What should I look for when buying a used 2022 Hyundai Elantra?

Accident-free inventory is solid at 76.6% — always verify the vehicle history report.

You should still check the history report carefully, because accident-free status does not replace a full records review. Prioritize a pre-purchase inspection that focuses on cabin condition, seat comfort, and signs of wear, since those are the areas most likely to affect your day-to-day satisfaction. It also makes sense to compare trims closely, because the feature set changes meaningfully as you move up the lineup.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The SE, SEL, N Line, and Limited trims differ in styling, cabin materials, and equipment. The base trim gets the essentials, while higher trims add more upscale tech and convenience features.
• Powertrain: The standard setup uses a 2.0-liter four-cylinder with a CVT and front-wheel drive. The N Line adds a turbocharged 1.6-liter engine with either a manual transmission or a seven-speed DCT, while the hybrid uses a different efficiency-focused powertrain.
• Safety package: The standard SmartSense suite includes forward-collision warning with pedestrian detection, automatic emergency braking, blind-spot warning with rear cross-traffic warning, lane-keeping assistance, lane-departure warning, and lane-centering assistance. Higher trims add features such as adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go capability and Highway Drive Assist.
• Infotainment: The base SE gets an 8-inch touchscreen, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, HD Radio, Bluetooth, a rearview camera, four speakers, and dual USB ports. Higher trims add more speakers, satellite radio, connected services, and on Limited, a 10.25-inch touchscreen with navigation.
• Fuel efficiency: The EPA combined figure ranges from 37 mpg for the SE to 28 mpg for the N Line with manual transmission, and the hybrid reaches 54 mpg in Blue trim and 50 mpg in Limited trim.

Which 2022 Hyundai Elantra trim should I buy?

The 2022 Hyundai Elantra is offered in 4 trim levels: SE, SEL, N Line, and Limited.

Here's the short version:

• SE: This is the value play if you want the lowest entry price and still want a strong safety and tech package, including wireless smartphone integration and the core SmartSense features.
• SEL: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it adds more speakers, satellite radio, Blue Link connected services, and access to useful options without jumping all the way to the top of the range.
• N Line: Choose this if you want the most engaging gas-model driving experience, with the turbocharged engine, sport-tuned suspension, larger brakes, and a more athletic feel.
• Limited: This is the most upscale choice, with the 10.25-inch touchscreen, navigation, Bose audio, digital instrument cluster, wireless charging, and the most complete feature set.

The safety package gets stronger as you move up the lineup, with features like adaptive cruise control and Highway Drive Assist becoming available on higher trims.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2022 Hyundai Elantra?

This is a moderate market for selective buyers, so you can shop with some leverage if you stay patient.

• Deal availability: 35.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 2,658 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 6.21% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 76.6% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $16,859, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2022 Hyundai Elantra's resale value?

The current average of $16,859 sits slightly below last year's $17,974.

That price movement suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can help you buy at a more favorable point in the cycle. For a future seller, that also means resale value will depend heavily on condition, mileage, and trim desirability rather than broad market momentum alone. Well-equipped trims and clean history examples should hold up better than bare-bones or heavily worn ones.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.6/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2022 Hyundai Elantra safe?

The 2022 Hyundai Elantra earns five-star ratings for overall crash protection from NHTSA, with four-star front crash protection and five-star side crash protection and rollover resistance ratings. The IIHS gave it top Good ratings in all six of its individual crash tests.

It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.

The standard SmartSense suite includes forward-collision warning with pedestrian detection, automatic emergency braking, blind-spot warning with rear cross-traffic warning, lane-keeping assistance, lane-departure warning, and lane-centering assistance. It also includes driver-attention warning, automatic high-beam headlights, a rear-seat reminder system, and Safe Exit Warning.

Higher trims can add intersection turn assistance, adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go capability, rear automatic braking, and Highway Drive Assist. One caveat is that the lower-level SE, SEL, and N Line trims with halogen headlights received a Marginal IIHS headlight rating, while the Limited’s LED headlights earned a Good rating.

Should I buy a 2022 Hyundai Elantra or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2022 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2022 if:

• 35.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Accident-free inventory is solid at 76.6% — always verify the vehicle history report.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 6.21% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.6/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• It combines strong value, advanced safety tech, and a roomy cabin.

Consider the 2021 if:

• At $15,524, the 2021 costs less than the current year's $16,859 average.
• It blends style, space, and technology with a more upscale feel.

Consider the 2023 if:

• At $18,760, the 2023 costs more than the current year's $16,859 average.
• It broadens the lineup with more versatility and easy-to-live-with tech.

The bottom line: If you want the best balance of price, features, and safety, the 2022 is the smart default. If your budget is tighter, the 2021 is the value-first alternative, while the 2023 makes sense if you want to spend more for a newer model-year step up.
