CarGurus Analysis: 2022 Ford Ranger

Summary
With 2,062 currently listed for sale and an average price of $27,837, 34.1% of 2022 Ford Ranger listings on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2022 Ford Ranger 4 / 5 stars.

Why it stands out
The 2022 Ford Ranger sits in the fourth generation of the modern Ranger, and it stands out as a practical midsize pickup that blends strong capability with relatively simple hardware. It uses a turbocharged 2.3-liter four-cylinder making 270 horsepower, paired with a 10-speed automatic transmission, and it can be had with rear-wheel drive or four-wheel drive. Ford also gave it useful truck credentials, including the highest payload capacity of any midsize pickup truck at the time and a maximum towing capacity of 7,500 pounds when properly equipped. That makes it appealing to buyers who want a work-ready truck that can still handle everyday driving.
The 2022 Ranger also benefits from a few features that make it feel more modern than its straightforward appearance suggests. Ford’s Co-Pilot 360 safety suite was available, along with adaptive cruise control, and the cabin could be equipped with an eight-inch screen running Sync 3. At the same time, the truck’s basic interior and dated infotainment setup show its age, and the generation’s reliability record is not spotless, with the 2019 debut singled out for transmission, electrical, and paint quality complaints. Even so, the Ranger’s combination of capability, available safety tech, and relatively good fuel economy for a gas-powered midsize truck helps explain its appeal.

Great value for the price,? Very roomy compared to the Colorado .

Engine is meh. Has to be driven above 3000 RPM to get any performance out of it. Previous owner had modified the truck and there were things we would have had to remove, over sized tires rubbed the fender wells at full lock, bed rack and such. $40,000 for a 3 year old Ranger...no one is going to think thats a good value. Its a compact truck and it feels like it. Were coming from an F150 and its night and day difference.

Generally — the 2022 Ford Ranger earns a 4/5 user rating, which points to solid overall appeal for used-truck shoppers. The overview describes it as a practical midsize pickup with strong capability, relatively simple hardware, and useful truck credentials, including a maximum towing capacity of 7,500 pounds when properly equipped. It also notes available safety tech and relatively good fuel economy for a gas-powered midsize truck, while acknowledging that the cabin is basic and the infotainment setup feels dated. Is the 2022 Ford Ranger reliable?

What should I look for when buying a used 2022 Ford Ranger?
Accident-free inventory is solid at 84.7% — always verify the vehicle history report.
You should prioritize a history report first, then focus on a pre-purchase inspection that checks for signs of prior damage, uneven wear, and any mechanical issues. Pay close attention to overall condition, since the Ranger’s appeal depends on finding one that still feels clean, well maintained, and ready for work or daily use.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2022 Ford Ranger?
This is a moderate market for selective buyers, so it rewards comparison shopping more than impulse buying.
- Deal availability: 32.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 2,058 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 9.61% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 84.7% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $27,815, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2022 Ford Ranger's resale value?
The current average of $27,821 sits slightly below last year's $30,781.
That softer pricing can help you buy at a more favorable entry point, but it also means future resale gains may be more limited if the market stays soft. If you plan to sell later, a well-kept Ranger with strong documentation should hold up better than one with questionable history or visible wear. The truck’s practical reputation and broad usefulness should continue to support demand.
Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2022 Ford Ranger or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2022 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2022 if:
- 32.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Accident-free inventory is solid at 84.7% — always verify the vehicle history report.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 9.61% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
Consider the 2021 if:
- At $25,970, the 2021 costs less than the current year's $27,821 average.
- It offers a more off-road-focused Tremor setup for buyers who want trail capability.
The bottom line: You should lean toward the 2022 if you want the stronger current-market mix of pricing, inventory, and overall appeal. If your priority is spending less up front, the 2021 is the better value play, especially if you want to save money and can find one in good condition.
