The BMW X6 originally launched in 2007 as a sportier alternative to the X5, with a fastback body style. Engines, drivelines and basic dimensions are nearly identical to the X5, but the X6 has lower ground clearance and overall height. And, oddly, despite its abbreviated tail end, it’s actually a bit longer than the X5. What you lose is cargo capacity, which is down 6.5 cubic feet in the X6. The 2022 BMW X6 is in its third generation, the current generation now hitting its third year of production.

The X6 “Sports Activity Coupe” is available in two trims, xDrive40i and M50i. The former features the 3.0-liter TwinPower Turbo inline six-cylinder with 335 hp and 330 lb-ft of torque. The X6 M50i, meanwhile, has a TwinPower Turbo 4.4-liter V8, which develops 523 hp and 553 lb-ft of torque.

Both trim levels use an eight-speed Steptronic Sport automatic transmission which allows the transmission to adapt its shift strategy to the route, the road conditions, and driver inputs. All X6 trim levels are now all-wheel drive (AWD). A rear-wheel-drive (RWD) version like the X5’s sDrive40i trim level was available in previous years, but it’s discontinued now.

According to BMW, the standard features list of the BMW X6 has only minor changes for 2022. Wireless charging has been removed, but Enhanced Bluetooth takes its place. Dravit Gray Metallic is added as a color option at extra cost. Option packages have changed slightly: M Shadowline lights were added to the Competition Package, adaptive LED headlamps were removed from the Executive Package, and M Compound Brakes with red calipers are now a no-cost, standalone option.

The xDrive40i is available in xLine or M Sport trim, which adds $3,500 to the cost. The trim contains Shadowline exterior trim, 20-inch M Star-spoke bi-color wheels, Sport Seats, an M steering wheel, a panoramic moonroof, BMW’s Live Cockpit with Navigation, Active Driving Assistant, and lane-departure warning.

The M50i is available in M Performance or Shadowline trim, which adds $600 and includes Extended Shadowline trim, 20-inch V-spoke wheels, and an illuminated kidney grille.

The X6 xDrive40i is available in 10 colors. Alpine White and Jet Black are both offered free of charge, and the balance of the colors are available for a $650 upcharge. Most of the metallic colors are $0 options in the M50i, but Tanzanite Blue II Metallic and Ametrin Metallic are both $1,950.

The 2022 BMW X6 xDrive40i starts at $67,350, while the X6 M50i starts at $86,250. Optional upgrades include a Dynamic Handling Package for $2,600, Driving Assistance Professional Package for $1,700, Parking Assistance Package for $800, Executive Package for $3,150, and Climate Comfort Package for $850.
