Used 2022 BMW 4 Series for Sale near Illinois

How much does the 2022 BMW 4 Series cost?

Prices have softened 4.95% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.

There are 890 listings available, which gives you a modest pool of inventory to compare.

Is the 2022 BMW 4 Series a good car?

Yes — with a 4.89/5 user rating and an expert rating of 6.5/10, it lands as a strong choice if you want a sporty luxury car with everyday usability. The model scores 8/10 across Performance, Technology, and Safety.

Drivers consistently praise its outstanding performance, comfort, and stylish design, and they especially like the engine power and handling. The overview also points to its five-door hatchback body style, easier rear-seat access, and useful cargo space as reasons it works better day to day than a typical coupe.

The trade-offs are clear: the styling can be polarizing, the back seat is cramped, and it is not a strong value play compared with some rivals. Even so, the market still shows 40.1% good or great deals, which suggests there are worthwhile listings if you shop carefully.

Is the 2022 BMW 4 Series reliable?

Owners rate it 4.89/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.

User feedback points to a dependable-feeling ownership experience, with drivers describing the car as enjoyable, comfortable, and well-liked over time. The expert evaluation also emphasizes that BMW’s powertrain feels responsive across most of its rev range and that the car remains composed and assured in real-world driving.

BMW includes complimentary scheduled maintenance for the first three years or 36,000 miles, which helps reduce early ownership costs. For used buyers, the main long-term risk is less about basic dependability and more about paying premium-car money for a model that can depreciate quickly.

What should I look for when buying a used 2022 BMW 4 Series?

Accident-free inventory is solid at 82.5% — always verify the vehicle history report.

You should still run a history report on every candidate, because accident-free listings are not the same as problem-free listings. Prioritize a pre-purchase inspection that checks the suspension, brakes, electronics, and interior wear, especially if the car has been optioned heavily or driven hard. Focus on condition and equipment balance, since this model’s appeal depends heavily on how well it was maintained and how much of the desirable tech it has.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The base 430i can be had with Sport or M Sport styling, while the M440i adds an M Performance design with Shadowline trim treatment. The 430i test vehicle also showed that even a loaded example can still miss some luxury features, so you should compare equipment carefully before assuming a higher-priced car is fully equipped.
• Powertrain: The 430i uses a turbocharged 2.0-liter inline four-cylinder engine with 255 horsepower and 294 pound-feet of torque, paired with an eight-speed Sport automatic. BMW also offers an M440i version, and the car’s power delivery is described as responsive across most of the rev range.
• Safety package: Active Driving Assistant is standard and includes forward-collision warning with pedestrian and cyclist detection, low-speed automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning with lane-keeping assistance, active blind-spot warning, and rear cross-traffic alert. The more advanced Driving Assistance Professional Package is available only on the M440i, so the 430i does not get that expanded suite.
• Infotainment: Standard Live Cockpit Professional includes a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and a 10.25-inch touchscreen. You also get wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, over-the-air updates for cloud-based navigation, and an Intelligent Personal Assistant.
• Fuel efficiency: The 430i returned 25.3 mpg on the evaluation loop, versus an official estimate of 28 mpg in combined driving.

Which 2022 BMW 4 Series trim should I buy?

The 2022 BMW 4 Series is offered in 2 trim levels: 430i and M440i.

Here's the short version:

• 430i: This is the best-value choice if you want the core 4 Series experience without stretching to the pricier model. It delivers the responsive turbo four-cylinder, strong infotainment, and standard Active Driving Assistant, but you should be aware that BMW reserves some desirable comfort and driver-assistance upgrades for the higher trim.
• M440i: Choose this if you want the more upscale and better-equipped version, especially if you value the available Driving Assistance Professional Package and other premium features that are not offered on the 430i. It is the trim to target if you want the fullest expression of the car’s tech and capability.

The 430i gets the standard safety package, while the M440i opens the door to the available Driving Assistance Professional Package.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2022 BMW 4 Series?

This is a buyer-friendly market, and you have room to shop carefully rather than rush.

• Deal availability: 40.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 890 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 4.95% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 82.5% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $35,276, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2022 BMW 4 Series's resale value?

The current average of $35,432 sits slightly below last year's $37,279.

That decline suggests the market has already moved in buyers’ favor, which can be a mixed signal for future sellers. On one hand, it means you may have less room for appreciation if you buy now and sell soon. On the other hand, the current pricing may help you enter at a more realistic level than buyers faced a year ago.

Because the model still has strong enthusiast appeal, well-kept examples should remain easier to move than less distinctive luxury cars. The key for resale will be condition, mileage, and equipment, since shoppers in this segment tend to reward clean, well-optioned cars.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.89/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2022 BMW 4 Series safe?

The 2022 BMW 4 Series earns 8/10 safety score from our experts.

It earns an 8/10 safety score from our experts.

Active Driving Assistant is standard on every 4 Series Gran Coupe and includes forward-collision warning with pedestrian and cyclist detection, low-speed automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning with lane-keeping assistance, active blind-spot warning, and rear cross-traffic alert. BMW also includes driver monitoring, post-collision braking, front and rear parking sensors, and connected safety services such as BMW Assist eCall and enhanced automatic collision notification.

The main caveat is that the more advanced Driving Assistance Professional Package is not available on the 430i; you need the M440i for that expanded suite. That means the base car is well equipped for everyday safety, but not as comprehensive as the higher trim.

Should I buy a 2022 BMW 4 Series or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2022 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2022 if:

• 40.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Accident-free inventory is solid at 82.5% — always verify the vehicle history report.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 4.95% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.89/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• The 2022 Gran Coupe returns after a hiatus, adding easier rear-seat access and useful cargo space.

Consider the 2021 if:

• At $32,158, the 2021 costs less than the current year's $35,432 average.
• It offers coupe and convertible body styles with rear-wheel drive standard and xDrive available.

The bottom line: Choose the 2022 if you want the newer Gran Coupe format, stronger everyday practicality, and a market that is currently leaning in your favor. If your priority is spending less up front, the 2021 is the better value path, especially if you are comfortable giving up some of the 2022’s added utility.
