As has always been the case, the reason to select a 2022 BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe over its competitors comes down to driving dynamics.
The base 430i is available with Sport or M Sport styling, while the M440i includes an M Performance design with a partial or full blacked-out Shadowline trim treatment. BMW is only shipping rear-wheel drive (RWD) 430i and all-wheel drive (AWD) M440i xDrive models at launch, but says AWD 430i xDrive and RWD M440i versions will follow at a later date.
Our Sunset Orange 430i test vehicle included an extra-cost paint charge, leather seats, a Shadowline Package, a Premium Package, a Parking Assistance Package, an M Sport Package, and a Dynamic Handling Package. In other words, it had almost everything you can add to a 430i, bringing its price to $57,295, including a $995 destination charge.
Larger and more aerodynamic than the previous 4 Series Gran Coupe, the redesigned 2022 model is a fundamentally appealing automobile let down by garish details. It has a long hood, a fast windshield, a proper dashboard-to-axle ratio, and a sporty roofline tapering into a tidy tail. However, no discussion of how the BMW 4 Series looks and feels can avoid mentioning the unnaturally large, flared-nostril grille. And the chrome-tipped studs of the chain-link grille pattern double down on the gaudiness.
You can see how a thin, wide European license plate separates the twin-kidney grille into smaller and more appealing north and south territories. But when a 4 Series is wearing a rectangular North American license plate—especially one with a white background—it looks like it should be munching on a carrot and asking its doctor: "Eh, what's up?"
With M Sport or M Performance styling, BMW applies the requisite extra-large front air intakes, which is fine. But the company's designers inexplicably marry them to weird rear bumper corner trim that looks like it belongs on a Subaru and not a sporting BMW.
As they say, beauty is in the eye of the beholder. However, one design judgment we might all agree upon is that the flush-fitting door handles on the new BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe are a terrible idea. We, and our family members, found them difficult to use because your fingers easily slip off of the handle's underside as you're pulling the door open.
Once you get them open, though, you'll find simplicity and quality rendered in asymmetrical geometric shapes. This is emblematic of BMW's modern approach to interior design, and in the 4 Series Gran Coupe, the only ergonomic misstep is the set of four silver electroplated climate control buttons, which are hard to read during the daytime.
Luxury, however, is not guaranteed. For example, despite its loaded status, the 430i test vehicle came with manually-adjustable front seats and did not include a premium sound system or adaptive cruise control. At the test vehicle's price, these omissions were surprising. Not only that, but you cannot get these upgrades on a 430i. BMW requires you to upgrade to the M440i for these items.
Suddenly, a Kia Stinger GT2 is looking pretty good, eh? And not just in the looks department.
The 4 Series Gran Coupe and the Kia Stinger each weigh more than 4,000 pounds in top specification, but the BMW doesn't feel like it. Instead, it has a lighter and more lively feel from behind the wheel, thanks to old-fashioned BMW goodness baked right in.
We're going to qualify that statement. Today's BMWs are not as good to drive as yesterday's BMWs. However, measured against other modern sport-luxury models, they remain plenty engaging and entertaining. So, let's all just move on from lamenting the passing of the E36 and E46 "peak BMW" era. It clearly isn't coming back, so let's get on with our lives already.
Our 430i RWD test vehicle had a turbocharged 2.0-liter inline four-cylinder engine making 255 horsepower and 294 pound-feet of torque. The maximum torque is on tap from 1,500 rpm to 4,400 rpm, and then the maximum horsepower kicks in from 5,000 rpm to 6,500 rpm. As a result of these specs, the turbo engine feels responsive across most of its rev range. Moreover, BMW's quoted 5.8 seconds from rest to 60 mph is credible.
A manual gearbox is unavailable, which is a shame. But nobody knows how to drive a stick anymore, so why would BMW spend the money to create a car that few people would buy? Besides, the eight-speed Sport automatic transmission is excellent, and it comes with paddle shifters and both Sport and Manual driving modes. A launch mode is also standard, but using it in a 430i only makes sense if you want to ensure that you outrun the Toyota Camry TRD in the next lane.
A Driving Dynamics Control system provides Eco Pro, Comfort, and Sport driving modes. Running the 430i Gran Coupe mainly in Comfort mode, we averaged 25.3 mpg on our evaluation loop, considerably less than the official EPA fuel economy estimate of 28 mpg in combined driving.
Blame our fun run up and down Deer Creek Canyon Road near Malibu, California, for that fuel economy result. We use this punishing and treacherous mountain road for performance-oriented vehicles, and it gains significant elevation in the space of only a few miles. But, it's a telling test of mid-range power, transmission behavior, torque-vectoring control, steering precision, braking system stamina, and overall vehicle balance.
Undoubtedly, the test car's optional Dynamic Handling Package helped our 430i fly up and down this stretch of road with ease. The Dynamic Handling Package installs M Sport brakes with red or blue calipers, high-performance tires, an Adaptive M suspension, and an M Sport differential that improves power delivery in tighter corners and curves.
In other words, it is tailor-made for roads like Deer Creek Canyon.
Aside from a hint of brake fade at the end of the run, the 430i Gran Coupe performed flawlessly. Long known for their near-perfect weight distribution and precise steering, BMWs are tossable and easy to trust. The 430i Gran Coupe puts 49.8 percent of its 3,792 pounds over the front axle and 50.2 percent over the rear, giving it exceptional balance. And, though not equipped with BMW's xDrive AWD system, our 430i's tail stayed planted around sharp hairpin curves while its broad powerband ensured maximum acceleration out of every corner.
Did we miss a manual transmission, especially the silky ones for which BMW is revered? Of course. But the sport automatic accurately predicts and executes shift requirements so that you can intensify your focus on keeping the rubber on the road.
When you're driving the 430i Gran Coupe in the real world of city streets, suburban boulevards, and multi-lane freeways, it is supremely composed and assured. However, in Comfort mode, it can feel a little dull to drive at the posted speed limit.
At the same time, it is all too easy to drive the 4 Series well above the speed limit. That's why you'll want to program the car's speed warning system for 75 mph or 80 mph. It serves as a gentle reminder that you're in danger of attracting the wrong kind of attention.
BMW says the new 4 Series Gran Coupe's sport suspension employs lift-related shocks that prevent excessive body dive and control body movement over large bumps. The result, the automaker claims, is greater ride comfort when traveling over minor imperfections in the pavement. In other words, the Gran Coupe's ride is smoother and less communicative than before, leading to the occasional boredom described above and, likely, criticism from the BMW faithful.
The Dynamic Handling Package helps to restore some of the thrills you can find in the daily drive, and the M Sport Package equips the car with variable sport steering that makes the 4 Series more agile and maneuverable in places like parking garages. If there is a downside to how BMW equipped the test vehicle, it resides with the M Sport brakes. They perform well when driving the car hard, but they make it difficult to bring the 4 Series to a smooth, clean stop in everyday traffic.
Though it is a more practical choice than a two-door 4 Series coupe or convertible, the 4 Series Gran Coupe still isn't roomy inside. Plus, getting in and out through the small doors is a hassle unless you're a Peloton addict.
In addition to the Gran Coupe's low stance, the center roof pillars and door structures are intrusive, and the low roofline and tiny door openings for the cramped back seat produce comical entry and exit antics. If you're going to carry passengers regularly, get a 3 Series sedan.
After squeezing into our 430i Gran Coupe test car for the first time, the lack of power-adjustable front seats was a surprise. Once you've positioned them for maximum comfort and support, you can forget about this omission until someone else drives the car. Multi-driver households won't be pleased about the situation.
Given the manual seats, we assumed the upholstery was the standard SensaTec leatherette. But no, the test car had the real deal, and since it's not $1,450 better than the SensaTec, you can probably skip it unless you absolutely cannot live without the Mocha or Oyster interior colors.
Cupholders and a wireless charging pad hide within a covered compartment located forward of the transmission shifter and the iDrive infotainment controls. The result is a clean look, but there is precious little practical storage space if you use cupholders for drinks.
Aside from allegedly easier access to the car's back seat, the point of the 4 Series Gran Coupe is its hatchback practicality. Open the hatch, and a 16.6 cubic foot trunk can accommodate three full-size suitcases stored on their sides. If you need more, you can fold the middle of the 40/20/40-split rear seat to accommodate longer items. Or you can flop the entire back seat down to create 45.6 cubic feet of cargo space. That's as much as some crossover SUVs.
No, the 4 Series Gran Coupe is not as practical as a 3 Series Sports Wagon. But just like with manual transmissions, BMW customers didn't want the wagon, so that more affordable and useful solution is no longer available in the U.S. market.
But don't worry. If the 4 Series Gran Coupe doesn't meet your requirements, you can always get the same BMW X3 that everyone else in your master-planned community is driving.
Along the way, you may have heard something about how awful BMW iDrive infotainment systems are to use. Forget that. Today's iDrive 7 is a real delight.
It's part of the 4 Series Gran Coupe's standard Live Cockpit Professional setup, which pairs a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster with a 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment display. In addition to the touchscreen, BMW's iDrive 7 system offers physical controls on the center console, a handful of functions on the steering wheel, and an Intelligent Personal Assistant that you awaken by saying something like, "Hey BMW" followed by a question or a command. There's even a stereo volume knob on the dashboard. Will wonders never cease?
All sarcasm aside, iDrive 7 impresses. The Intelligent Personal Assistant can seem a little slow to respond, but it provided accurate results across a wide range of standard testing prompts during our evaluation of the technology. The standard 10-speaker sound system is decent, too, though not up to snuff for a car wearing an as-tested price of more than $57,000.
The iDrive 7 system also includes wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, SiriusXM satellite radio, Amazon Alexa compatibility, and a cloud-based navigation system kept current by over-the-air updates. BMW also provides a confusing array of connected services: BMW TeleServices, BMW ConnectedDrive services, and Connected Package Professional. Some contents of these packages are free, and some require an active, paid subscription to the service.
Highlights of these connected service packages include the aforementioned Intelligent Personal Assistant, BMW Remote Services, including remote engine starting, a 4G LTE WiFi hotspot, and Concierge Services. Owners can also use a BMW Connected App with smartphone access to remotely start the car, view the vehicle and its surroundings, and transfer favorite settings to another BMW with compatible technology. In addition, Digital Key technology transforms an owner's Apple iPhone into a key that unlocks and starts the car.
If you want a 16-speaker Harman Kardon premium sound system or a head-up display, you'll need to upgrade to the M440i model.
BMW Assist eCall, SOS Emergency Request, and an enhanced automatic collision notification system are among the safety-related connected services offered on the 4 Series Gran Coupe. The car also has a driver monitoring system, post-collision braking, and front and rear parking sensors. In addition, a surround-view camera is available as part of a Parking Assistant Package.
Active Driving Assistant is standard on every 4 Series Gran Coupe. This collection of driving assistance and collision avoidance technologies includes forward-collision warning with pedestrian and cyclist detection, low-speed automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning with lane-keeping assistance, an active blind-spot warning system, and rear cross-traffic alert.
That represents the extent of what BMW supplies on the 430i Gran Coupe. If you upgrade to the M440i, a Driving Assistance Professional Package is available.
The Driving Assistance Professional Package adds adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go capability, an Active Driving Assistant that combines the adaptive cruise control with lane-centering assistance and lane-change assistance technologies, and an emergency stop assistance system that can bring the car to a safe stop if the driver becomes unresponsive. Additionally, this package adds evasive steering assistance, front cross-traffic alert, and a Traffic Jam Assistant system for use in heavy traffic.
Additionally, the M440i Gran Coupe is available with Icon Adaptive LED Headlights with LaserLight, a Back-Up Assistant technology that autonomously re-traces the car's path to get out of its current parking space, and an automated Parking Assistant Plus system for parallel and perpendicular parking situations.
While it would be nice if BMW offered the Driving Assistance Professional Package on the 430i, the base model nevertheless has all the ingredients for a safe form of transport. The lane-keeping assistance system is particularly effective and doesn't screw around when you genuinely and unintentionally drift out of your lane. Corrective action is swift and decisive.
While BMW does include its Ultimate Care program for all new 4 Series Gran Coupes, the complimentary maintenance plan, which covers all scheduled services during the first three years or 36,000 miles of driving, doesn't do much to offset the car's high price tag.
An Audi A5 Sportback is an arguably better deal, not to mention the Kia Stinger, which saves thousands even when equipped with every option. Often overlooked but worthy of consideration, the roomy Volkswagen Arteon is the bargain of this small class, though it's not nearly as much fun to drive as the Audi, BMW, or Kia.
Cost-effectiveness is not the BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe's forte. But with so few alternatives from which to choose, its premium price tag might not matter.
As has always been true, the reason to select a 4 Series Gran Coupe over its competitors comes down to driving dynamics. Put this car on the right road and engage the proper settings, and this BMW can put a broader smile on your face than the competition. But is that enough to compel consumers seeking this type of car to spend extra on the blue-and-white roundel?
It all depends on what's most important to you and whether or not you like the way the Gran Coupe looks as much as you like how it drives.
