Used 2021 Volkswagen Tiguan for Sale nearNewark, NJ

How much does the 2021 Volkswagen Tiguan cost?

Prices have softened 11.71% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.

There are 3,353 listings available, which suggests you have a healthy amount of inventory to compare.

Is the 2021 Volkswagen Tiguan a good car?

Yes — the 2021 Volkswagen Tiguan earns a 4.5/5 user rating and a 7.33/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Form and function at 9/10.

Drivers consistently praise its comfort, safety features, practicality, spacious interior, and good fuel economy. The Tiguan is also framed as a family-friendly SUV with plenty of cargo space and easy-to-use technology, which fits shoppers who want something straightforward and useful for daily life.

The trade-offs are familiar: performance can feel sluggish at times, and the cabin materials are described as cheap. In practical terms, this is a strong fit if you value space and usability more than quick acceleration or a premium-feeling interior.

The market still shows solid interest, with 37.8% of listings priced as good or great deals.

Is the 2021 Volkswagen Tiguan reliable?

Owners rate it 4.5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.

Drivers describe it as comfortable, practical, and good on fuel, with several comments pointing to a dependable family-SUV experience. The expert evaluation also emphasizes everyday usability and a composed, easygoing driving character, which supports the sense that this is a vehicle built for routine use rather than drama.

Volkswagen’s Carefree Coverage adds free scheduled maintenance for two years or 20,000 miles, plus roadside assistance and warranty coverage, which helps reduce early ownership costs. For used buyers, the main long-term risk is that a neglected example could be more frustrating than expensive, so service history matters.

What should I look for when buying a used 2021 Volkswagen Tiguan?

Accident-free inventory is solid at 77.6% — always verify the vehicle history report.

You should still check the report carefully, because a clean listing percentage does not replace documentation. Prioritize a pre-purchase inspection that focuses on the cabin, electronics, and any signs of hard use, since the Tiguan’s appeal depends heavily on everyday condition and usability. It also makes sense to confirm that the features you want are actually present, because equipment changes meaningfully by trim.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The S, SE, SEL, SE R-Line Black, and SEL Premium R-Line each bring different equipment levels, and the base trim leaves out some convenience and safety content that appears higher up the range.
• Powertrain: Every model uses a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder with 184 horsepower and 221 pound-feet of torque, paired with an eight-speed automatic. Front-wheel drive is standard, and 4Motion all-wheel drive is available on most models.
• Safety package: IQ Drive is standard and includes forward-collision warning, pedestrian detection, automatic emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring, and rear cross-traffic alert. Adaptive cruise control starts with SE trim, lane-departure warning with lane-keep assist starts with SEL, and automatic high-beam headlights are reserved for SEL Premium R-Line.
• Infotainment: Starting with SE trim, MIB3 brings an 8-inch touchscreen, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, faster response times, WiFi for up to four devices, SiriusXM 360L, Amazon Alexa compatibility, and connected services.
• Fuel efficiency: The Tiguan returns 25 mpg in combined driving with front-wheel drive and 24 mpg with all-wheel drive.

Which 2021 Volkswagen Tiguan trim should I buy?

The 2021 Volkswagen Tiguan is offered in 5 trim levels: S, SE, SEL, SE R-Line Black, and SEL Premium R-Line.

Here's the short version:

• S: This is the entry point, so it makes sense if you want the Tiguan’s space and core safety tech at the lowest price, but you give up some of the nicer convenience and infotainment upgrades found higher up.
• SE: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it adds MIB3 with an 8-inch touchscreen, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and adaptive cruise control.
• SEL: Choose this if you want a more complete safety and comfort package, including lane-departure warning with lane-keep assist and front and rear parking sensors.
• SE R-Line Black: Pick this if you want the sportier appearance and equipment upgrades of the R-Line treatment without going all the way to the top trim.
• SEL Premium R-Line: This is the most fully equipped version, with standard 4Motion AWD, automatic high-beam headlights, a surround-view camera, and the premium Fender audio system.

The SEL and SEL Premium R-Line also add Volkswagen Digital Cockpit instrumentation, while the safety suite is strongest on the upper trims.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2021 Volkswagen Tiguan?

This is a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you have room to shop carefully and compare listings.

• Deal availability: 37.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 3,353 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 11.71% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 77.6% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $17,179, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2021 Volkswagen Tiguan's resale value?

The current average of $17,179 sits slightly below last year's $19,458.

That decline suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can help you buy at a more favorable point in the cycle. For a future seller, it also means resale value will depend heavily on condition, mileage, and trim, because the model is already trading below where it was a year ago.

Well-equipped examples with desirable features should hold up better than stripped-down or heavily worn ones, especially if they have clean history reports and strong maintenance records. Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2021 Volkswagen Tiguan safe?

The 2021 Tiguan earns a Top Safety Pick rating from IIHS in SEL and SEL Premium R-Line specification.

It earns an 8/10 safety score from our experts.

Volkswagen’s IQ Drive suite is standard and includes forward-collision warning, pedestrian detection, automatic emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring, and rear cross-traffic alert. Adaptive cruise control starts with SE trim, lane-departure warning with lane-keep assist starts with SEL, and automatic high-beam headlights are reserved for SEL Premium R-Line. Front and rear parking sensors are not included on S and SE trims.

One caveat is that the IIHS recognition applies only to SEL and SEL Premium R-Line because of their standard LED headlights. The adaptive cruise control and lane-keep assist also have some real-world quirks, so you should test those systems during your own drive.

Should I buy a 2021 Volkswagen Tiguan or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2021 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2021 if:

• 37.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Accident-free inventory is solid at 77.6% — always verify the vehicle history report.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 11.71% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• It combines roomy packaging with standard safety tech and useful everyday practicality.

Consider the 2020 if:

• At $15,654, the 2020 costs less than the current year's $17,179 average.
• It is one of only two compact crossovers with third-row seating.

Consider the 2022 if:

• At $20,198, the 2022 costs more than the current year's $17,179 average.
• It adds refreshed safety tech to an already roomy, value-focused formula.

The bottom line: The 2021 is the sweet spot if you want the best mix of price, safety, and everyday usefulness. If your budget is tighter, the 2020 can save you money while keeping the Tiguan’s space advantage, but the 2021 is the better all-around buy for most shoppers.
