Used 2021 Volkswagen Passat for Sale near Ohio

How much does the 2021 Volkswagen Passat cost?

Prices have softened 9.01% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.

There are 505 listings available, which suggests you should have a workable selection to compare.

Is the 2021 Volkswagen Passat a good car?

Generally — the 2021 Volkswagen Passat earns a 4.3/5 user rating and a 6.5/10 expert rating. The Passat is positioned as a simple, value-focused midsize sedan, and it leans into that role with a spacious cabin and great ride quality. It was developed specifically for the United States market and built in Chattanooga, Tennessee, which reinforces its practical, everyday-family-sedan mission.

The trade-offs are clear: styling is understated, the technology is outdated, and the seats are uncomfortable. Even so, if you want a roomy sedan that prioritizes value over flash, the Passat fits that use case well. 33.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals, which gives you some room to shop selectively.

Is the 2021 Volkswagen Passat reliable?

Owners rate it 4.3/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction.

Volkswagen describes the Passat as a well-executed midsize sedan that makes a good daily driver, and the expert review backs up that basic competence. It has a straightforward turbocharged four-cylinder setup, a conventional automatic transmission, and front-wheel drive, which keeps the formula simple. The review also notes that VW offers free scheduled maintenance for the first two years or 20,000 miles, which can help reduce early ownership costs.

For used buyers, the main long-term risk is less about complexity and more about whether the car’s age-related compromises — especially outdated tech and average performance — will still suit your needs.

What should I look for when buying a used 2021 Volkswagen Passat?

At 73.1% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if you’re comparing multiple listings at similar prices. Focus on overall condition rather than just mileage, since this model’s value proposition depends heavily on how well it has been maintained and preserved. Pay close attention to signs of wear in the cabin and to any evidence of prior bodywork.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The base S uses cloth upholstery, while SE and R-Line models add V-Tex leatherette; R-Line also brings sportier exterior styling, 19-inch wheels, and an Adaptive Front-lighting System.
• Powertrain: Every 2021 Passat uses a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine with a six-speed automatic transmission and front-wheel drive; it makes 174 horsepower and 206 pound-feet of torque.
• Safety package: Adaptive cruise control is standard across all trim levels, and available driver-assistance features include forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, lane-keep assist, and automatic high beams.
• Infotainment: All models get a 6.3-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay/Android Auto, Bluetooth, and SiriusXM satellite radio; R-Line adds HD Radio, built-in navigation, and an eight-speaker Fender premium audio system.
• Fuel efficiency: EPA-estimated fuel economy is 28 mpg combined, with 24 mpg city and 36 mpg highway.

Which 2021 Volkswagen Passat trim should I buy?

The 2021 Volkswagen Passat is offered in 3 trim levels: S, SE, and R-Line.

Here's the short version:

• S: This is the value play if you want the lowest entry point and can live with the simplest cabin materials and equipment.
• SE: This is the best-value trim for most shoppers because it adds V-Tex leatherette, keyless entry, and rear charge-only USB-A ports without pushing the price to the top of the range.
• R-Line: Choose this if you want the most equipment, including 19-inch wheels, sportier exterior styling, built-in navigation, HD Radio, and the Fender premium audio system.

Adaptive cruise control is standard on all trim levels, so you don’t need to move up just to get that safety feature.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2021 Volkswagen Passat?

This is a moderate market for selective buyers, so it makes sense to compare listings carefully and move quickly on strong examples.

• Deal availability: 33.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 505 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 9.01% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 73.1% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $14,162, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2021 Volkswagen Passat's resale value?

The current average of $14,483 sits slightly below last year's $15,916.

That price movement suggests the Passat has already absorbed a meaningful amount of depreciation, which can help future resale stability if you buy at the right price. Because the market is currently softer than it was a year ago, your biggest advantage as a seller will come from buying below average and keeping the car in strong condition. A clean history and good maintenance records should matter more than ever if you want to protect value later.

Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.3/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2021 Volkswagen Passat safe?

The 2021 Passat earns top “good” scores from IIHS, though its standard headlights only earned a “marginal” rating.

It earns a 7/10 safety score from our experts.

Volkswagen made adaptive cruise control standard on all trim levels for 2021, and other available driver-assistance features include forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, lane-keep assist, and automatic high beams. Standard safety systems also include Automatic Post-Collision Braking System and Intelligent Crash Response System.

The main caveat is the headlight result, which is weaker than the rest of the crash-test performance and worth keeping in mind if you drive often at night.

Should I buy a 2021 Volkswagen Passat or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2021 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2021 if:

• 33.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 73.1% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 9.01% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.3/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
• Adaptive cruise control is now standard across the board, which improves the year’s equipment story.

Consider the 2020 if:

• At $14,059, the 2020 costs less than the current year's $14,483 average.
• It offers a roomy, value-focused cabin with strong practicality.

Consider the 2022 if:

• At $16,298, the 2022 costs more than the current year's $14,483 average.
• It emphasizes a huge interior, a big trunk, and a soft ride.

The bottom line: If you want the best balance of price and equipment, the 2021 is the smart default. If you’re especially price-sensitive, the 2020 can save you money, while the 2022 makes sense only if you’re willing to pay more for a newer model year.
