Used 2021 Volkswagen Passat for Sale near Colorado

How much does the 2021 Volkswagen Passat cost?

Prices have softened 12.25% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.

There are 500 listings available, which suggests you should have a workable selection to compare.

Is the 2021 Volkswagen Passat a good car?

Generally — the 2021 Volkswagen Passat earns a 4.33/5 user rating and a 6.5/10 expert rating. The model scores 7/10 across Look and feel, Cost effectiveness, and Safety.

Volkswagen positions it as a value-focused midsize sedan with a spacious cabin and great ride quality, and those strengths make sense if you want an easy everyday family car. The trade-offs are clear: the styling is uninspired, the technology is outdated, and the seats are uncomfortable.

The Passat’s appeal is strongest if you prioritize space and comfort over flash or modern gadgetry. Its simple setup and practical character fit buyers who want a straightforward sedan rather than a feature-packed one.

34.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals, which gives you some room to shop selectively.

Is the 2021 Volkswagen Passat reliable?

Owners rate it 4.33/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction.

Volkswagen describes the Passat as a well-executed midsize sedan that should work well as a daily driver, and the expert evaluation reinforces that it covers the basics competently. The powertrain is simple: every model uses a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder with a six-speed automatic and front-wheel drive.

That setup is straightforward, and Volkswagen also includes free scheduled maintenance for the first two years or 20,000 miles. For used buyers, the main long-term risk is less about complexity and more about whether you’re comfortable with an older-feeling sedan that doesn’t lead the class in refinement or tech.

What should I look for when buying a used 2021 Volkswagen Passat?

At 72.2% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a careful inspection of bodywork, tires, brakes, and interior condition. Because the Passat is positioned as a value sedan, condition matters a lot: a clean, well-kept example is more likely to feel like a smart buy than one with visible wear or prior damage.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: S models use cloth upholstery, while SE and R-Line models add V-Tex leatherette; R-Line also gets 19-inch wheels, an Adaptive Front-lighting System, sportier exterior styling, and a rear spoiler.
• Powertrain: Every model uses a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder with 174 horsepower and 206 pound-feet of torque, paired with a six-speed automatic and front-wheel drive.
• Safety package: Adaptive cruise control is standard, and available driver aids include forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, lane-keep assist, and automatic high beams.
• Infotainment: All models get a 6.3-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay/Android Auto, Bluetooth, and SiriusXM; R-Line adds HD Radio, built-in navigation, and an eight-speaker Fender audio system.
• Fuel efficiency: EPA-estimated fuel economy is 28 mpg combined, 24 mpg city, and 36 mpg highway.

Which 2021 Volkswagen Passat trim should I buy?

The 2021 Volkswagen Passat is offered in 3 trim levels: S, SE, and R-Line.

Here's the short version:

• S: This is the value play if you want the lowest entry price and can live with the most basic interior materials and equipment.
• SE: This is the best-value trim for most shoppers because it adds keyless entry, rear charge-only USB-A ports, and a more upscale feel without jumping to the top price.
• R-Line: Choose this if you want the most equipment, including 19-inch wheels, adaptive front lighting, navigation, and the Fender audio system.

Adaptive cruise control is standard across all trims, so you do not need to move up the lineup just to get that safety feature.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2021 Volkswagen Passat?

This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop with some leverage if you’re patient.

• Deal availability: 34.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 500 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 12.25% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 72.2% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $14,165, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2021 Volkswagen Passat's resale value?

The current average of $14,212 sits slightly below last year's $16,195.

That decline suggests the Passat has softened in the used market, which can be good news if you’re buying now but less favorable if you plan to sell soon. A lower current price can help you get in at a better value, but it also means future appreciation is unlikely.

Because the Passat is a value-oriented sedan in a crowded segment, resale will likely depend heavily on condition, mileage, and trim. Well-kept examples should hold up better than neglected ones, especially if they have desirable equipment and a clean history.

Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.33/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2021 Volkswagen Passat safe?

The 2021 Passat earns top “good” scores in all IIHS crash tests, but its standard headlights only earned a “marginal” rating.

It earns a 7/10 safety score from our experts.

Volkswagen makes adaptive cruise control standard on all trims, and other available driver-assistance features include forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, lane-keep assist, and automatic high beams. It also includes Automatic Post-Collision Braking System and Intelligent Crash Response System as standard equipment.

The main caveat is the headlight result, which is weaker than the rest of the crash-test performance. That means you should pay attention to lighting performance and trim equipment if you do a lot of night driving.

Should I buy a 2021 Volkswagen Passat or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2021 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2021 if:

• 34.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 72.2% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 12.25% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.33/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
• It adds standard adaptive cruise control across the lineup.

Consider the 2020 if:

• At $14,167, the 2020 costs less than the current year's $14,212 average.
• It offers a roomy, value-focused cabin with a refreshed design.

Consider the 2022 if:

• At $16,461, the 2022 costs more than the current year's $14,212 average.
• It emphasizes comfort, space, and a soft ride in the final U.S. model year.

The bottom line: If you want the best balance of price and availability, the 2021 is the sensible starting point. If you’re especially price-sensitive, the 2020 can save you a little money, while the 2022 makes sense only if you’re willing to pay more for the newer model year.
