CarGurus Analysis: 2021 Toyota Sienna
overall

Summary
With 1,080 currently listed for sale and an average price of $35,126.00, 31.9% of 2021 Toyota Siennas for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2021 Toyota Sienna 4.33 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it an 8.33 / 10.
76.9% of 2021 Sienna models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2021 Toyota Sienna stands out because Toyota gave its minivan a major makeover for the year, adding new styling and a hybrid powertrain. It also marks the Sienna’s fourth generation of production since debuting as a 1997 model. For buyers who want a family hauler that emphasizes efficiency and comfort, that combination makes the 2021 Sienna especially distinctive.
Its biggest strengths are easy to understand: it is fuel-efficient, has a great ride quality, and is spacious. The hybrid gasoline-electric powertrain is standard equipment, which gives the Sienna a clear identity in a segment where practicality matters. It is also built on the Toyota New Global Architecture platform, shared with the Highlander and other current Toyota models.
There are a few drawbacks to keep in mind. The stereo is lacking, and the styling is described as uninspired. Some drivers also mention concerns about acceleration, interior material quality, missing features like a spare tire, and limited connectivity tech options. Even so, the 2021 Toyota Sienna’s roomy cabin and strong gas mileage make it appealing to shoppers who value everyday usefulness over flash.

HUD, Gas mileage, Radar cruise with lane trace assist etc. makes it a great vehicle for long road trips. Wish the BSM indicators appear on the HUD and have more options displayed on the HUD as well. Also the Android Auto\Apple Car Play navigation is not projected into HUD. Wish that was included as well.

2021 Toyota Sienna Price Trends
CarGurus tracks the prices of millions of used car listings every year. See how the average price of 2021 Toyota Sienna prices has changed over time.
See more price trendsHow much does the 2021 Toyota Sienna cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $35,198 |
| Year-Round Low | $32,985.69 |
| Year-Round High | $36,382.77 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $36,384 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −3.26% |
Prices have softened 3.26% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
There are 1,128 listings available, which suggests you have a workable amount of inventory to compare.
If you find a listing below $32,985.69, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
Is the 2021 Toyota Sienna a good car?
Generally — 4.33/5 from owners and 8.33/10 from experts points to a strong overall package. The model scores 9/10 across Look and feel, Form and function, and Technology.
Drivers repeatedly praise the roomy interior, excellent gas mileage, and smooth handling. The hybrid setup and available AWD also come up as satisfying for road trips and family use.
The main trade-offs are the acceleration feel and some interior-material concerns. The expert notes also point to a CVT that can blunt throttle response and a stereo that is lacking.
For you, that means the Sienna makes the most sense if you want a practical family hauler with efficiency and space at the center of the experience. It fits especially well if your priorities are comfort, utility, and long-distance ease rather than sporty response. 31.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals, so there are still some attractive opportunities in the market.
Is the 2021 Toyota Sienna reliable?
Owners rate it 4.33/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction.
Drivers describe it as dependable, trouble-free, and a vehicle they can count on for family duty and road trips. The expert notes also emphasize that the engine, motor, and battery combination is a proven one, which supports confidence in the hybrid system.
Toyota’s hybrid-related component coverage adds another layer of reassurance for ownership planning. For used buyers, the bigger risk is less about the concept and more about how well a specific example has been maintained and driven.
What should I look for when buying a used 2021 Toyota Sienna?
At 74.4% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection on any promising listing. Focus on signs of prior bodywork, uneven panel gaps, tire wear, and anything that suggests the van has had a harder-than-average life. Because this is a family vehicle, condition matters not just for cosmetics but for long-term usability.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: LE and XLE use 17-inch wheels, while Limited, XSE AWD, and Platinum AWD move to 18-inch wheels; XSE FWD and Platinum FWD get 20-inch wheels. Base trims also miss some convenience and tech upgrades that appear higher up the range.
- Powertrain: A 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine and two electric motors make 243 horsepower. Front-wheel drive is standard, all-wheel drive is available, and the CVT is tuned more for efficiency than quick response.
- Safety package: Toyota Safety Sense 2.0 is standard and includes full-speed range dynamic radar cruise control, lane-tracing assist, pre-collision system with pedestrian and bicyclist detection, lane-departure alert, automatic high beams, and road sign assist. The Star Safety System is standard as well.
- Infotainment: A nine-inch touchscreen is standard, along with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Amazon Alexa, and Bluetooth. Wireless smartphone integration is not mentioned here, and the larger audio and rear-seat entertainment upgrades arrive higher in the lineup.
- Fuel efficiency: Front-wheel drive models are rated at 36 mpg city, 36 mpg highway, and 36 mpg combined. All-wheel drive models are rated at 35 mpg city, 36 mpg highway, and 35 mpg combined.
Which 2021 Toyota Sienna trim should I buy?
The 2021 Toyota Sienna is offered in 5 trim levels: LE, XLE, XSE, Limited, Platinum.
Here's the short version:
- Base trim: LE is the value entry point, but it stays simpler on wheels, audio, and convenience features than the higher trims.
- Sweet-spot trim: XLE is the best balance for many shoppers because it adds more comfort and convenience without jumping all the way to luxury pricing.
- Premium/top trim: Platinum brings the richest tech and convenience mix, including the most advanced display and available premium features.
- Off-road trim: None of the trims here are aimed at off-road use, so there is no special daily-driver caution to weigh on that front.
Toyota Safety Sense 2.0 is standard across all trims.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2021 Toyota Sienna?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop patiently but should move quickly on strong listings.
- Deal availability: 31.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 1,128 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 3.26% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 74.4% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $32,985.69, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2021 Toyota Sienna's resale value?
The current average of $35,198 sits slightly below last year's $36,384.
That softer pricing can help you buy more efficiently now, but it also means future resale gains may be more gradual if the market stays balanced. If you plan to sell later, the Sienna’s strong family appeal and efficiency should help keep demand steady. Well-kept examples with clean history and desirable equipment should hold up better than rougher, higher-mileage vans.
Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.33/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2021 Toyota Sienna safe?
It earns a 7/10 safety score from our experts.
Toyota Safety Sense 2.0 is standard and includes full-speed range dynamic radar cruise control, lane-tracing assist, pre-collision system with pedestrian and bicyclist detection, lane-departure alert, automatic high beams, and road sign assist. The Star Safety System is standard too, along with 10 airbags, LATCH anchors, a rear-seat reminder system, and a tire pressure monitoring system.
A spare tire is optional, while an inflator kit is standard. The safety suite is comprehensive across the lineup, so you do not need to move up trims to get the core driver-assistance coverage.
Should I buy a 2021 Toyota Sienna or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2021 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2021 if:
- 31.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 74.4% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 3.26% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.33/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
- Toyota’s first standard hybrid minivan setup brings strong efficiency and broad family appeal.
Consider the 2020 if:
- At $27,130, the 2020 costs less than the current year's $35,198 average.
- It offers a practical, spacious minivan with available AWD.
Consider the 2022 if:
- At $37,176, the 2022 costs more than the current year's $35,198 average.
- It carries the redesigned hybrid formula forward with added trim variety.
The bottom line: If you want the best mix of efficiency, family utility, and current-market availability, the 2021 is the strongest default choice. If your budget is tighter, the 2020 can save you money while still delivering the core Sienna strengths. If you want to stay closer to the newest version and can spend more, the 2022 is the cleaner upgrade path.
