Is the 2021 Toyota Sienna a good car?

Generally — the 2021 Toyota Sienna earns a 4.33/5 user rating and an 8.33/10 expert rating. The model scores 9/10 across Look and feel, Form and function, and Technology.

Drivers consistently praise the roomy interior, excellent gas mileage, and smooth handling, and many also like the AWD and hybrid combination for road trips. The overview also points to a family-focused minivan that emphasizes efficiency and comfort, which matches the owner feedback well.

The main trade-offs are the acceleration and the quality of the interior materials, plus some complaints about the stereo and limited connectivity options. For you, that means the Sienna makes the most sense if you want a practical, efficient family hauler more than a sporty or luxury-leaning one.

With 35.8% of listings marked as good or great deals, there’s enough market activity to shop selectively.

Is the 2021 Toyota Sienna reliable?

Owners rate it 4.33/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction.

The expert notes also describe the engine, motor, and battery combination as a proven one, which supports confidence in the powertrain.

Toyota’s cost-effectiveness notes also highlight an eight-year/100,000-mile hybrid-related component warranty, which is a useful ownership cushion for a hybrid minivan. For used buyers, the main long-term risk is less about the basic concept and more about how well the specific vehicle has been maintained and used.

What should I look for when buying a used 2021 Toyota Sienna?

At 74.8% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if you’re comparing multiple listings at similar prices. Focus on condition details that matter in a family minivan: interior wear, electronics, tires, and evidence of prior body repair.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The LE uses 17-inch wheels, while higher trims move up to 18-inch or 20-inch wheels, and the cabin equipment also steps up as you climb the lineup. The base trim is the most stripped-down starting point, so compare comfort and convenience features carefully if you want a better-equipped daily driver.
• Powertrain: A 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine and two electric motors make 243 horsepower, with FWD standard and AWD available across the lineup. The CVT is tuned for smooth, efficient driving, but it can blunt throttle response.
• Safety package: Toyota Safety Sense 2.0 is standard and includes full-speed range dynamic radar cruise control, lane-tracing assist, pre-collision system with pedestrian and bicyclist detection, lane-departure alert, automatic high beams, and road sign assist. The Star Safety System is also standard, along with 10 airbags, a rear-seat reminder, TPMS, and an inflator kit.
• Infotainment: A nine-inch touchscreen is standard, along with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Amazon Alexa, Bluetooth, and six USB charging ports. Wireless phone integration is not mentioned, and the available tech expands with trim level.
• Fuel efficiency: FWD models are rated at 36 mpg city, 36 mpg highway, and 36 mpg combined, while AWD models are rated at 35/36/35 mpg combined.

Which 2021 Toyota Sienna trim should I buy?

The 2021 Toyota Sienna is offered in 5 trim levels: LE, XLE, XSE, Limited, Platinum.

Here's the short version:

• LE: This is the entry point, but it still gets the standard hybrid powertrain, Toyota Safety Sense 2.0, a nine-inch touchscreen, and the core family-friendly packaging. It’s the value play if you want the Sienna’s efficiency and space without paying for extras.
• XLE: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it adds more convenience and connectivity while staying well below the upper trims. It also unlocks more available equipment, including the rear-seat entertainment system and the 1500-watt inverter.
• XSE: This trim adds a more upscale, sportier presentation with larger wheel options and more available tech. It suits you if you want a more distinctive look without jumping all the way to the luxury-oriented trims.
• Limited: This is where the Sienna starts leaning into premium comfort and tech, including the larger driver display and available upgrades like the digital rearview mirror. It’s a strong choice if you want a more polished family hauler.
• Platinum: This is the top trim, with the most advanced tech and the most upscale presentation, including the head-up display and the highest-end audio and convenience features. Choose it if you want the most fully equipped Sienna.

Toyota Safety Sense 2.0 and the Star Safety System are standard across all trims.

What is the 2021 Toyota Sienna's resale value?

The current average of $34,413 sits slightly below last year's $35,948.

That softer pricing suggests the market has cooled a bit, which can help you buy more efficiently now. For a future seller, the current trend implies you may not see rapid appreciation, but you also have a model with broad family appeal and strong efficiency credentials.

Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.33/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2021 Toyota Sienna safe?

The 2021 Toyota Sienna gets Toyota Safety Sense 2.0 standard, including full-speed range dynamic radar cruise control, lane-tracing assist, pre-collision system with pedestrian and bicyclist detection, lane-departure alert, automatic high beams, and road sign assist.

It earns a 7/10 safety score from our experts.

The Star Safety System is also standard, along with 10 airbags, LATCH connectors, a rear-seat reminder system, TPMS, and an inflator kit. Buyers can still opt for a spare tire, and that’s worth considering if you want extra peace of mind for road trips.

Should I buy a 2021 Toyota Sienna or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2021 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2021 if:

• 35.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 74.8% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 4.27% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.33/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
• Toyota’s 2021 redesign adds a standard hybrid powertrain and a major efficiency-focused makeover.

Consider the 2020 if:

• At $26,217, the 2020 costs less than the current year's $34,413 average.
• It’s the only minivan with available AWD and emphasizes space and practicality.

Consider the 2022 if:

• At $36,583, the 2022 costs more than the current year's $34,413 average.
• It adds a new Woodland trim for buyers wanting a more adventurous look.

The bottom line: If you want the redesigned hybrid Sienna with strong efficiency and broad appeal, the 2021 is the best all-around pick. If price is your top priority, the 2020 is the cheaper route, while the 2022 makes sense if you specifically want the newer trim expansion and don’t mind paying more.
