overall

Summary
With 253 currently listed for sale and an average price of $32,352, 33.2% of 2021 Toyota RAV4 Primes for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2021 Toyota RAV4 Prime 4.21 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it an 8.17 / 10.

Why it stands out
The 2021 Toyota RAV4 Prime stands out by combining efficiency and performance in a plug-in hybrid SUV. It brings a plug-in hybrid powertrain to Toyota’s popular crossover for the first time, and it is described as more fuel-efficient than the current RAV4 Hybrid, more powerful, quicker, and more refined. That mix gives it a distinctive appeal for buyers who want a practical SUV with a stronger emphasis on electrification.
It also comes with standard advanced safety features, which adds to its everyday appeal. The main drawback noted is value: it is not as good a value as the RAV4 Hybrid. Even so, the 2021 Toyota RAV4 Prime makes a strong case for itself by pairing efficiency with notably brisker performance than a typical hybrid SUV.

The RAV4 Prime SE has met or exceeded my expectations for features, performance, and economy. The electric range around town is great and easily exceeds 50 miles depending on driving conditions. The acceleration is better than I expected using only the electric motors. The gas-only fuel economy at 75 to 80 MPH was over 30 MPG driving from Los Angeles to Mesquite on the first road trip. The size, comfort, and versatility are just what I needed to haul a lot of gear for kitesurfing/camping trips. The adaptive cruise is great on road trips and useful around town. One disappointment was the lack of one-foot driving. Using the transmission to downshift simulates this to an extent, but it cancels cruise control. The SE lacks paddle regen that is found on the XSE. Pressing the brake peddle does cause regen as indicated on the driving gauge, so the efficiency is there. The lane centering works pretty well on freeways as long as you are not in the right lane where exits confuse it. I find it uncomfortable to pass close to semitrucks using lane centering. It wont follow around sharper turns (like canyons) and it doesnt always sense the light touch of your hand on the wheel. This causing warnings and cancellations. Gripping tighter or with more weight on the wheel causes accidental overrides. Still, it is more useful than not on highways once you get used to it. Integration with Android Auto is nice for navigation, but requires connection via USB making it less useful for running short errands where you have to constantly connect and disconnect your phone. Aftermarket wireless connections are being developed, but are not available yet (8/2021). My other car is a 2012 Chevy Volt, so Im very familiar with plug-in hybrids. The RAV4 is better in most ways compared to the Volt with more range, more power, more comfort, and more tech features. Still, the Volt remains my daily driver around town even after 175K miles.

I had to fly out of state to get this car. It was worth the trip. Very technologically advanced. I hope it proves to be as reliable as every other Toyota I’ve owned. I have never owned an SUV and I’m loving the ease of getting in and out. Feels like a solid car. Loving the high mileage and using zero gas for my commute.

Is the 2021 Toyota RAV4 Prime a good car?
Generally — the 4.21/5 user rating points to strong owner satisfaction, and the expert rating is 8.17/10. The standout strength is Performance at 9/10.
Drivers consistently praise its powerful performance, excellent electric range, and modern technology features. Many also like the spacious interior and comfort, especially for road trips and errands. The main trade-off is value, since some owners feel the price is high and the cabin materials and ride noise could be better.

The expert evaluation reinforces that impression by describing the powertrain as smooth and easy to live with, with electric-car-like response and a refined, quiet character.
Toyota also notes that ownership costs depend heavily on how often you charge it, so regular charging matters if you want to get the most from the plug-in setup. For used buyers, the main long-term risk is paying for a Prime that hasn’t been charged consistently, since that can undercut the efficiency advantage you’re buying.
What should I look for when buying a used 2021 Toyota RAV4 Prime?
Accident-free inventory is solid at 83.9% — always verify the vehicle history report.
You should still check the history report carefully, because a clean listing percentage does not replace a proper records review. Prioritize a pre-purchase inspection that focuses on charging equipment, hybrid-system operation, and signs of wear that could affect efficiency or comfort. Pay close attention to condition, since the cabin materials and road noise are common owner concerns.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The base SE gets an 8.0-inch touchscreen, while the XSE upgrades to a 9.0-inch screen and adds available features such as a head-up display and video rearview mirror. The base trim is also the one most likely to feel lightest on premium touches, since the interior is described as not feeling like a major step up from lesser RAV4 models.
- Powertrain: You get a plug-in hybrid setup built around a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine and an electric rear motor for all-wheel drive. Output is 302 hp, and Toyota estimates 42 miles of EV range and 94 MPGe combined.
- Safety package: Toyota Safety Sense 2.0 is standard, with pre-collision system with pedestrian and cyclist detection, lane-departure alert with steering assist, lane-tracing assist, automatic high beams, and road-sign assist. Blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and eight airbags are standard too.
- Infotainment: The base SE has an 8.0-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and a built-in WiFi hotspot. The XSE gets a 9.0-inch screen, and the Prime is the only RAV4 model that can be equipped with a head-up display and video rearview mirror.
- Fuel efficiency: Toyota anticipates 42 miles of electric range and 94 MPGe combined. The standard onboard charger is 3.3 kW, while the XSE’s 6.6-kW charger cuts Level 2 charging time to 2.5 hours.
Which 2021 Toyota RAV4 Prime trim should I buy?
The 2021 Toyota RAV4 Prime is offered in 2 trim levels: SE and XSE.
Here's the short version:
- SE: This is the entry point, and it already gives you the core Prime experience: plug-in hybrid power, standard all-wheel drive, an 8.0-inch touchscreen, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and a WiFi hotspot. It makes the most sense if you want the least expensive way into the model and are comfortable skipping the extra tech and charging upgrades.
- XSE: This is the better-equipped choice, with a 9.0-inch screen, a 6.6-kW onboard charger, and access to features like the head-up display and video rearview mirror. If you want the best-value trim, this is the one to focus on because it adds meaningful convenience and tech upgrades.
Toyota Safety Sense 2.0, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and eight airbags are standard across the lineup.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2021 Toyota RAV4 Prime?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop patiently but should move quickly on strong listings.
- Deal availability: 32.3% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 248 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 3.07% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 83.9% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $30,855, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2021 Toyota RAV4 Prime's resale value?
The current average of $32,299 sits slightly below last year's $33,320.
That softer pricing can help you buy in at a more favorable point, but it also means future resale will depend on how well the market continues to value plug-in hybrid efficiency and performance. If demand stays steady, the Prime’s combination of utility and electrification should help support used values. If supply remains healthy, resale gains may be more gradual.
Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.21/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2021 Toyota RAV4 Prime safe?
The RAV4 Prime comes standard with Toyota Safety Sense 2.0, and other versions of the RAV4 earned a Top Safety Pick rating from IIHS and a five-star overall safety rating from NHTSA, though with four-star ratings in the driver’s side front and rollover crash tests.
It earns an 8/10 safety score from our experts.
The standard driver-assistance suite includes a pre-collision system with pedestrian and cyclist detection, lane-departure alert with steering assist, lane-tracing assist, automatic high beams, and road-sign assist. Blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert are standard too, along with eight airbags.
One caveat is that lane-tracing assist does not work as well as similar systems from other manufacturers, so you should test it on your own drive if that feature matters to you.
Should I buy a 2021 Toyota RAV4 Prime or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2021 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2021 if:
- 32.3% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Accident-free inventory is solid at 83.9% — always verify the vehicle history report.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 3.07% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.21/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
- It introduced the plug-in hybrid RAV4 formula with strong electric range and quick acceleration.
Consider the 2022 if:
- At $35,621, the 2022 costs more than the current year's $32,299 average.
- It carries over the same core plug-in hybrid appeal with no major changes.
The bottom line: If you want the lower entry price and still want the Prime’s core strengths, the 2021 is the smarter buy. If you’re willing to pay more for a newer model year with the same basic formula, the 2022 is the easy alternative. For price-sensitive shoppers, the 2021 offers the better value path.
