overall

Summary
With 239 currently listed for sale and an average price of $32,258.00, 35.1% of 2021 Toyota RAV4 Primes for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2021 Toyota RAV4 Prime 4.21 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it an 8.17 / 10.
84.9% of 2021 RAV4 Prime models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2021 Toyota RAV4 Prime stands out by bringing a plug-in hybrid powertrain to Toyota’s popular crossover for the first time. That combination gives it a distinctive appeal: it is designed to deliver both efficiency and performance, and it makes a strong case for electrification in a mainstream SUV.
Compared with the current RAV4 Hybrid, the RAV4 Prime is described as more fuel-efficient, more powerful, quicker, and more refined. It also comes with standard advanced safety features, which adds to its everyday appeal. For buyers who want a compact SUV that feels more energetic than the typical hybrid while still emphasizing efficiency, that mix is the Prime’s biggest draw.
Its main drawback is value, since it is not as good a value as the RAV4 Hybrid. Some drivers also point to its price point, interior materials, and noise levels during the ride, even though many appreciate its powerful performance, electric range, modern technology features, spacious interior, and comfort.

The RAV4 Prime SE has met or exceeded my expectations for features, performance, and economy. The electric range around town is great and easily exceeds 50 miles depending on driving conditions. The acceleration is better than I expected using only the electric motors. The gas-only fuel economy at 75 to 80 MPH was over 30 MPG driving from Los Angeles to Mesquite on the first road trip. The size, comfort, and versatility are just what I needed to haul a lot of gear for kitesurfing/camping trips. The adaptive cruise is great on road trips and useful around town. One disappointment was the lack of one-foot driving. Using the transmission to downshift simulates this to an extent, but it cancels cruise control. The SE lacks paddle regen that is found on the XSE. Pressing the brake peddle does cause regen as indicated on the driving gauge, so the efficiency is there. The lane centering works pretty well on freeways as long as you are not in the right lane where exits confuse it. I find it uncomfortable to pass close to semitrucks using lane centering. It wont follow around sharper turns (like canyons) and it doesnt always sense the light touch of your hand on the wheel. This causing warnings and cancellations. Gripping tighter or with more weight on the wheel causes accidental overrides. Still, it is more useful than not on highways once you get used to it. Integration with Android Auto is nice for navigation, but requires connection via USB making it less useful for running short errands where you have to constantly connect and disconnect your phone. Aftermarket wireless connections are being developed, but are not available yet (8/2021). My other car is a 2012 Chevy Volt, so Im very familiar with plug-in hybrids. The RAV4 is better in most ways compared to the Volt with more range, more power, more comfort, and more tech features. Still, the Volt remains my daily driver around town even after 175K miles.

I had to fly out of state to get this car. It was worth the trip. Very technologically advanced. I hope it proves to be as reliable as every other Toyota I’ve owned. I have never owned an SUV and I’m loving the ease of getting in and out. Feels like a solid car. Loving the high mileage and using zero gas for my commute.

The expert review adds that the powertrain feels smooth and electric-car-like, with a largely silent experience and a refined, quiet cabin compared with other RAV4 models. Toyota also includes a 3.3-kilowatt onboard charger, which helps make regular charging more practical if you have access to it.
For used buyers, the main long-term ownership risk is less about outright durability and more about whether the previous owner charged it consistently and maintained the plug-in system properly.
What should I look for when buying a used 2021 Toyota RAV4 Prime?
Accident-free inventory is solid at 85.2% — always verify the vehicle history report.
You should still check the history report carefully, because a clean listing percentage does not replace a proper records review. Prioritize a pre-purchase inspection that focuses on charging equipment, brake feel, tire wear, and any signs of heavy use. It also helps to pay close attention to cabin condition, since the overview and owner feedback both point to interior materials and noise as common concerns.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The base SE gets an 8.0-inch touchscreen, while the XSE adds a 9.0-inch screen, the largest available in a RAV4. The Prime’s interior does not feel like a major step up from less-expensive RAV4 models, and you cannot get real leather seats. If you want the most equipment and the strongest value balance, the XSE is the better pick.
- Powertrain: The Prime uses a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine with Toyota’s hybrid system and a dedicated rear electric motor for AWD. Output rises to 302 hp, and Toyota says it reaches 60 mph in 5.7 seconds. It is also tuned to feel quieter and more refined than other RAV4 models.
- Safety package: Toyota Safety Sense 2.0 is standard, including pre-collision system with pedestrian and cyclist detection, lane-departure alert with steering assist, lane-tracing assist, automatic high beams, and road-sign assist. Blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and eight airbags are standard too. Lane-tracing assist does not work as well as similar systems from other manufacturers.
- Infotainment: The base SE gets an 8.0-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and a built-in WiFi hotspot. The XSE has a 9.0-inch screen, and a head-up display and video rearview mirror are available. Toyota also keeps useful physical knobs and buttons for key functions.
- Fuel efficiency: Toyota anticipated an electric range of 42 miles in EV mode and a combined efficiency rating of 94 MPGe. The XSE trim level gets a 6.6-kW charger that cuts Level 2 charging time to 2.5 hours.
Which 2021 Toyota RAV4 Prime trim should I buy?
The 2021 Toyota RAV4 Prime is offered in 2 trim levels: SE, XSE.
Here's the short version:
- SE: This is the entry point, but it still gives you the core Prime experience: the plug-in hybrid powertrain, standard all-wheel drive, an 8.0-inch touchscreen, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and a WiFi hotspot. It makes sense if you want the lowest starting price and are comfortable with the simpler setup.
- XSE: This is the best-value trim if you want the most complete version of the Prime. It adds the 9.0-inch screen, the 6.6-kW charger, and access to available tech features like the head-up display and video rearview mirror. If you plan to keep the vehicle a while, this is the trim that most clearly justifies the upgrade.
Toyota Safety Sense 2.0, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and eight airbags are standard across the lineup.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2021 Toyota RAV4 Prime?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop with some leverage if you compare listings carefully.
- Deal availability: 34.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 256 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 3.21% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 85.2% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $30,850.82, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2021 Toyota RAV4 Prime's resale value?
The current average of $32,290 sits slightly below last year's $33,363.
That softer pricing can help you buy more selectively now, but it also suggests the model has already absorbed some of its near-term depreciation. For a future seller, that means resale value should be helped by the Prime’s strong mix of performance, efficiency, and utility, especially if demand stays steady for plug-in hybrids.
Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.21/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2021 Toyota RAV4 Prime safe?
It earns a Top Safety Pick rating from the IIHS, and the related RAV4 also received five-star overall safety ratings from NHTSA, with four-star ratings in the driver’s side front and rollover crash tests.
It earns a 8/10 safety score from our experts.
Toyota Safety Sense 2.0 is standard and includes a pre-collision system with pedestrian and cyclist detection, lane-departure alert with steering assist, lane-tracing assist, automatic high beams, and road-sign assist. Blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and eight airbags are standard too.
The main caveat is that lane-tracing assist does not work as well as similar systems from some other manufacturers, and the broader RAV4 lineup missed the highest IIHS rating because of poorly rated headlights.
Should I buy a 2021 Toyota RAV4 Prime or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2021 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2021 if:
- 34.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Accident-free inventory is solid at 85.2% — always verify the vehicle history report.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 3.21% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.21/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
- It brings Toyota’s first plug-in hybrid powertrain to the RAV4, with strong electric range and quick acceleration.
Consider the 2022 if:
- At $35,971, the 2022 costs more than the current year's $32,290 average.
- It keeps the same core plug-in hybrid appeal with no major changes.
The bottom line: If you want the better price and are comfortable with the 2021’s core strengths, this model year is the smarter buy. If you want the newer year and do not mind paying more for essentially the same formula, the 2022 is the simpler alternative. For price-sensitive buyers, the 2021 offers the stronger value case right now.
