overall

Summary
With 231 currently listed for sale and an average price of $32,358.00, 32.0% of 2021 Toyota RAV4 Primes for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2021 Toyota RAV4 Prime 4.21 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it an 8.17 / 10.

Why it stands out
The 2021 Toyota RAV4 Prime stands out by bringing a plug-in hybrid powertrain to Toyota’s popular crossover for the first time. That combination gives it a distinctive appeal: it is designed to deliver both efficiency and performance, and it makes a strong case for electrification in a mainstream SUV.
Compared with the current RAV4 Hybrid, the RAV4 Prime is described as more fuel-efficient, more powerful, quicker, and more refined. It also comes with standard advanced safety features, which adds to its everyday appeal. For buyers who want a compact SUV that feels more energetic than the typical hybrid while still emphasizing efficiency, that mix is the Prime’s biggest draw.
Its main drawback is value, since it is not as good a value as the RAV4 Hybrid. Some drivers also point to its price point, interior materials, and noise levels during the ride, even though many appreciate its powerful performance, electric range, modern technology features, spacious interior, and comfort.

The RAV4 Prime SE has met or exceeded my expectations for features, performance, and economy. The electric range around town is great and easily exceeds 50 miles depending on driving conditions. The acceleration is better than I expected using only the electric motors. The gas-only fuel economy at 75 to 80 MPH was over 30 MPG driving from Los Angeles to Mesquite on the first road trip. The size, comfort, and versatility are just what I needed to haul a lot of gear for kitesurfing/camping trips. The adaptive cruise is great on road trips and useful around town. One disappointment was the lack of one-foot driving. Using the transmission to downshift simulates this to an extent, but it cancels cruise control. The SE lacks paddle regen that is found on the XSE. Pressing the brake peddle does cause regen as indicated on the driving gauge, so the efficiency is there. The lane centering works pretty well on freeways as long as you are not in the right lane where exits confuse it. I find it uncomfortable to pass close to semitrucks using lane centering. It wont follow around sharper turns (like canyons) and it doesnt always sense the light touch of your hand on the wheel. This causing warnings and cancellations. Gripping tighter or with more weight on the wheel causes accidental overrides. Still, it is more useful than not on highways once you get used to it. Integration with Android Auto is nice for navigation, but requires connection via USB making it less useful for running short errands where you have to constantly connect and disconnect your phone. Aftermarket wireless connections are being developed, but are not available yet (8/2021). My other car is a 2012 Chevy Volt, so Im very familiar with plug-in hybrids. The RAV4 is better in most ways compared to the Volt with more range, more power, more comfort, and more tech features. Still, the Volt remains my daily driver around town even after 175K miles.

I had to fly out of state to get this car. It was worth the trip. Very technologically advanced. I hope it proves to be as reliable as every other Toyota I’ve owned. I have never owned an SUV and I’m loving the ease of getting in and out. Feels like a solid car. Loving the high mileage and using zero gas for my commute.

Is the 2021 Toyota RAV4 Prime a good car?
Generally — the 4.21/5 user rating points to strong owner satisfaction, and the expert rating is 8.17/10. The standout strength is Performance at 9/10.
Drivers repeatedly praise its powerful performance, excellent electric range, and modern technology features. Many also like the spacious interior and comfort, which makes it appealing for road trips and daily errands.
The trade-offs are value and refinement: the price point is a common complaint, and some owners mention interior materials and noise levels during the ride. That lines up with the overview’s focus on a compact SUV that blends efficiency with performance, especially if you want something more energetic than a typical hybrid.

Is the 2021 Toyota RAV4 Prime reliable?
Owners rate it 4.21/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction. The owner feedback also points to a dependable, trouble-free feel, with drivers highlighting its long-term appeal alongside the strong electric range and everyday usability.
The expert review reinforces that impression by describing the powertrain as smooth and refined, with quiet operation and a comfortable ride. Toyota also includes a 3.3-kW onboard charger, which helps make regular charging more practical if you can plug in at home or work.
For used buyers, the main long-term ownership risk is less about basic durability and more about whether the previous owner charged it consistently and maintained it well.
What should I look for when buying a used 2021 Toyota RAV4 Prime?
Accident-free inventory is solid at 84.9% — always verify the vehicle history report.
You should still check the report carefully, because even a clean-looking listing can hide prior damage or incomplete repairs. Prioritize a pre-purchase inspection that focuses on charging equipment, brake feel, tire wear, and any signs of heavy use. Since this model’s appeal depends on both efficiency and performance, condition matters as much as mileage.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The base SE trim gets an 8.0-inch touchscreen, while the XSE adds a 9.0-inch screen and more available tech. The base trim is also where you’re more likely to notice the biggest feature gaps versus the better-equipped version.
- Powertrain: It uses a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine with Toyota’s hybrid system and a rear electric motor for AWD. Output is 302 hp, and Toyota says it can reach 60 mph in 5.7 seconds.
- Safety package: Toyota Safety Sense 2.0 is standard, including pre-collision system with pedestrian and cyclist detection, lane-departure alert with steering assist, lane-tracing assist, automatic high beams, and road-sign assist. Blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert are standard too.
- Infotainment: The base SE has an 8.0-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and a built-in WiFi hotspot. The XSE gets a 9.0-inch screen, and a head-up display and video rearview mirror are available.
- Fuel efficiency: Toyota anticipates 42 miles of electric range and 94 MPGe combined. The XSE’s 6.6-kW charger cuts Level 2 charging time to 2.5 hours.
Which 2021 Toyota RAV4 Prime trim should I buy?
The 2021 Toyota RAV4 Prime is offered in 2 trim levels: SE and XSE.
Here's the short version:
- SE: This is the entry point, but it still gives you the core RAV4 Prime experience: the plug-in hybrid powertrain, standard AWD, Toyota Safety Sense 2.0, an 8.0-inch touchscreen, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and a WiFi hotspot. It makes the most sense if you want the Prime’s efficiency and performance without paying for extras you may not need.
- XSE: This is the better-equipped choice and the one that best showcases the Prime’s tech and charging upgrades. You get a 9.0-inch screen, a 6.6-kW onboard charger, and access to features like the head-up display and video rearview mirror. If you want the best-value trim for most shoppers, this is the one to focus on.
Safety content notes that other RAV4 versions missed the highest IIHS rating because of poorly rated headlights, so it’s worth paying attention to lighting equipment and trim-specific equipment differences.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2021 Toyota RAV4 Prime?
This is a moderate, selective-buyer market, so you can shop carefully without expecting every listing to be a bargain.
- Deal availability: 29.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 238 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 3.95% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 84.9% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $30,853.27, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2021 Toyota RAV4 Prime's resale value?
The current average of $32,338 sits slightly below last year's $33,669.
That softer pricing can help you buy more confidently now, but it also means future sellers may face a more competitive market if prices keep easing. The good news is that the model’s strong owner satisfaction and broad appeal should help support demand. Its mix of efficiency, performance, and standard safety features gives it a clear identity that many used buyers will still want.
Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.21/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2021 Toyota RAV4 Prime safe?
It earns a Top Safety Pick rating from IIHS, and the gasoline and hybrid RAV4 also received a five-star overall safety rating from NHTSA, with four-star ratings in the driver’s side front and rollover crash tests.
It earns a 8/10 safety score from our experts.
Toyota Safety Sense 2.0 is standard, and it includes a pre-collision system with pedestrian and cyclist detection, lane-departure alert with steering assist, lane-tracing assist, automatic high beams, and road-sign assist. Blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert are standard too, along with eight airbags.
The main caveat is that lane-tracing assist does not work as well as similar systems from some other manufacturers, and the related RAV4 safety results missed the highest IIHS award because of poorly rated headlights.
Should I buy a 2021 Toyota RAV4 Prime or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2021 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2021 if:
- 29.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Accident-free inventory is solid at 84.9% — always verify the vehicle history report.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 3.95% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.21/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
- It introduced Toyota’s plug-in hybrid crossover formula with strong electric range, quick acceleration, and standard advanced safety features.
Consider the 2022 if:
- At $36,071, the 2022 costs more than the current year's $32,338 average.
- It adds no major changes and keeps the same core plug-in hybrid appeal.
The bottom line: If you want the better buy, the 2021 is the stronger starting point because it already delivers the Prime’s core strengths at a lower average price. If you’re comparing listings and the 2022 is only slightly more expensive, it can still make sense, but price-sensitive buyers should focus on the 2021 and shop for a clean, well-priced example.
