Is the 2021 Kia Soul a good car?

Generally — the 2021 Kia Soul earns a 4.3/5 user rating and a 7.0/10 expert rating. The model scores 8/10 across Cost effectiveness and Safety.

Owners consistently praise its unique design, comfortable interior, and practical features. The review summary also points to reliability and ease of entry, which matters if you want a small vehicle that’s easy to live with day to day. Kia’s own overview frames it as more grown up and useful than before, while still keeping the Soul’s distinctive personality intact.

The main trade-offs are the lack of available all-wheel drive and the noisy character called out in testing. That makes it a better fit if you value space, value, and easy-to-use tech over all-weather traction or a hushed cabin.

The market looks reasonably active, with 33.4% of listings marked as good or great deals.

Is the 2021 Kia Soul reliable?

Owners rate it 4.3/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction. Review feedback highlights reliability, dependability, and a trouble-free ownership experience, along with the kind of practicality that helps you count on it for everyday use.

Kia’s warranty coverage adds another ownership advantage, and that can help reduce worry for used buyers who plan to keep the car for a while.

What should I look for when buying a used 2021 Kia Soul?

At 70.2% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a careful inspection of body panels, alignment, and signs of prior repair. Focus on condition first, especially if you’re comparing similarly priced listings, because the market includes enough inventory to be selective. It also helps to verify that the equipment you want is actually present, since some features vary by trim and package.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The LX starts with a 7-inch touchscreen, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, six speakers, USB ports, Bluetooth, two 12-volt outlets, steering wheel-mounted controls, and power windows and door locks. Higher trims add a 10.25-inch touchscreen, HD radio, voice recognition, keyless entry, automatic climate controls, remote start, a sunroof, and more, so the base trim is the one most likely to feel feature-light.
• Powertrain: The standard setup uses a 2.0-liter inline-four with 147 horsepower and 132 pound-feet of torque, paired with a six-speed manual or an available CVT. A turbocharged 1.6-liter four-cylinder with 201 hp and 195 lb-ft is also available, paired with a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission. Front-wheel drive is standard, and all-wheel drive is not offered.
• Safety package: The available driver-assistance features include forward collision warning with pedestrian detection, lane keep assist, automatic emergency braking, lane change assist, driver attention monitoring, blind spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert/rear collision avoidance assist, adaptive cruise control, and a head-up display. Many of these features are held back in added-cost options, and the base LX can be paired with a Technology Package that adds a long list of advanced safety features.
• Infotainment: The base system uses a 7-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. A 10.25-inch touchscreen is available, along with HD radio and voice recognition. Kia’s interface is described as simple and easy to use, which is a plus if you want straightforward controls.
• Fuel efficiency: The base 2.0-liter engine with the manual transmission is rated at 26/31/27 mpg city/highway/combined, while the CVT version is rated at 28/33/30 mpg. The turbocharged engine returns 27/32/29 mpg.

Which 2021 Kia Soul trim should I buy?

The 2021 Kia Soul is offered in 6 trim levels: LX, S, X-Line, GT-Line, EX, Turbo.

Here's the short version:

• LX: This is the value-focused starting point, and it gives you the Soul’s core strengths without pushing the price up. It’s the trim to consider if you want the lowest entry cost and are comfortable adding features selectively.
• S: This trim is the best-value choice for many shoppers because it sits above the base model while still keeping the Soul’s practical, easy-to-use character. It’s a smart middle ground if you want more equipment without jumping too far up the price ladder.
• X-Line: This trim adds a distinct look and, for 2021, new suspension tuning. It suits you if you want a more styled version of the Soul and are willing to pay for the extra character.
• GT-Line: This trim also gets the updated suspension configuration for 2021 and leans into a sportier presentation. It makes sense if you want a more expressive Soul with a little more visual flair.
• EX: This is the better pick if you want a more upscale-feeling Soul with more comfort and convenience features. It’s the trim to target if you care more about everyday livability than keeping the sticker price as low as possible.
• Turbo: This is the top choice if you want the strongest powertrain and the most performance-oriented setup in the lineup. It’s the one to buy if you care most about extra power and don’t mind paying for it.

The base LX can be paired with a Technology Package that adds a long list of advanced safety features, so it’s worth considering if safety equipment matters more than trim prestige.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2021 Kia Soul?

The market looks selective rather than overheated, so you can shop with some leverage if you’re patient.

• Deal availability: 33.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 1,735 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 4.66% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 70.2% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $13,626, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2021 Kia Soul's resale value?

The current average of $13,670 sits slightly below last year's $14,338.

That softer pricing suggests the Soul has already absorbed some depreciation, which can help future sellers if they buy at the right price today. A lower entry point can make it easier to hold value relative to what you paid, especially if you choose a clean, well-equipped example. Strong demand for practical, easy-to-live-with small vehicles can also help support resale interest when it’s time to sell.

Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.3/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2021 Kia Soul safe?

The 2021 Kia Soul earns a Top Safety Pick award from IIHS and four stars overall from NHTSA, including four stars for front crash safety, five stars for side crash safety, and four stars for rollover resistance.

It earns an 8/10 safety score from our experts.

The available driver-assistance features include forward collision warning with pedestrian detection, lane keep assist, automatic emergency braking, lane change assist, driver attention monitoring, blind spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert/rear collision avoidance assist, adaptive cruise control, and a head-up display. Some of those features are reserved for added-cost options, so you’ll want to confirm exactly what’s installed on any used example you’re considering.

One caveat is that IIHS headlight performance varies by trim level, with some versions rated Good and others Poor, so trim choice matters here.

Should I buy a 2021 Kia Soul or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2021 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2021 if:

• 33.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 70.2% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 4.66% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.3/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
• The 2021 brings a standard rear occupant alert and updated suspension configurations for the X-Line and GT-Line trims.

Consider the 2020 if:

• At $12,592, the 2020 costs less than the current year's $13,670 average.
• It blends small-SUV utility with compact-car efficiency.

The bottom line: If you want the newer model-year updates and a still-reasonable market price, the 2021 is the better default choice. If your priority is spending less up front, the 2020 is the more budget-friendly path.
